The way too early 2023 NFL Draft thread

Looks like a more traditional draft class next year, with a couple of QB's likely to be off the board early and some genuine blue chippers at other positions like Will Anderson, Jackson Smith Njigba, Michael Mayer and Myles Murphy.

We'll almost certainly be targeting a free safety, Brandon Joseph and Malachy Moore are probably the two most highly rated at this point. There's a few nice DLinemen, both at tackle and edge but, and @BaconGrundleCandy can correct me if I'm wrong, a dearth of top end OLinemen.

Much better class all around. Few guys could end up in the elite category. These things go in cycles.

I'll have some individual threads up tomorrow or next day most likely. Trying to put together some final thoughts on the draft class as well. Lacrosse game now and Celts after so a little busy in the early part of the day.

Part of me wonders if this is why the Patriots DIDN'T draft a NT or EDGE player.. That they felt that the over-all talent was no better than what they could get with Davis and that it would be better next year.

We know that the Patriots forward think with stuff like this.

No Brandon Joseph in the first, please. Does not like to play tough/physical. No thanks.
Lots of better prospects will be in play. I can see BB wanting to up in this draft. It’ll be that good of a first round.

Next year’s draft should be much better than this year’s.

Lots of quality wide receivers and defensive linemen!

My favorite is dl Carter of Georgia and wide receiver boutte of lsu.

By my count we could be looking at as many as 11 (edit: 10) draft picks in 2023. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Looks like we'll have the following:
1st round
2nd round
3rd round (from Carolina)
3rd round (comp pick JC Jackson)
4th round
4th round (from LA Rams)
5th round (edit: no pick in the 5th)
6th round (from Carolina)
6th round
6th round (comp pick Ted Karras)
7th round

This could change as we'll likely trade one or more for players currently on other teams. We could also trade some of our own players for future picks though this scenario is unlikely.
With so many picks this year (10) and estimated $79 million in cap space I'm thinking the Pats will try and move up in 2023 draft, especially the first round, where there may be several highly ranked players available.

Let's say we pick at 21 again. How far up the ladder can we go if we package pick 21, Carolina's 3rd (est pick: 75) and our 4th? 8 spots? So pick # 13/14? With Carolina's pick expected to be in top 10-15 of round 3 we could also use our 2nd rounder to move up even higher.

the 5th rounder from Miami comes from where?
the trade for Parker was 3rd in 2023 from Pats for Parker and 5th in 2022 from Miami

else seems correct but as you mentioned that will change until next draft, especially the later rounds are often something BB trades for players.
regarding the spot where they might pick will be somewhere between 8th and 16th without trade ups, this season will be tough let's see if the Pats can suprise but I wouldn't be schocked if they have a negative record, AFC is loaded and Pats have still some areas where they have to first show improvement

I'm not sure how much of a correlation there is. (Hi, Devin and Dalton!)

Harry for a 6th? Stidham for a 6th? 7th?
How would you feel if you were a fan of another team, and learned they acquired Harry or Stidham for a 6th or a 7th? NFL GMs likely feel the same way and that’s why it hasn’t happened yet. Unless either of them have a lights-out camp and preseason, I think there’s a 90% likelihood that they’re cut versus traded.

Although both are a big disappointment, they are not useless. So how far above useless are they?? If a team has a few QB injuries, I think Stidham is a reasonable backup in a pinch. I have seen some awful backup QB play. You could be right. Harry looks OK once in awhile, maybe not worth the money in a trade, but is probably better than a Tre Nixon (example of a 7th round pick).

Cam smith corner back from South Carolina is a guy to watch this year.

He could work really well in our system.

I will say this, I am in no way a fan of tanking, but if BB called me up and asked “Who are we be tanking for???”

“WILL ANDERSON COACH…WILL ANDERSON” and I wouldn’t have to think at all on it.

Boy oh Boy, Sweet little baby Jesus would I love to see WA in a Pats uni…never gonna happen, but I can dream.

You win, picked up a 6th for Stidham and a 7th. Now let’s see if anything happens with Harry….

Picked up a 6th for a 7th. I thought we could get more if we waited until August when teams, after injuries, need a backup QB, but obviously the Pats are done with Stidham and Josh knows what he is, so the agreement is that he is a 6.5 round pick. Also QB injuries are not extensive through training camp so maybe it is better to let him go while he is worth something.

I hope Harry is worth more than that. We will see. There is no room at the house for Harry unless we have multiple injuries.
