I tried a few times with Mad Men, it just didn't work for me. In spite of my appreciation for the 60's being represented in a non counterculture way it just didn't generate a buy in from me.

What is this "one hour afternoon nap" you speak of? Sounds glorious. I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I forgot about Sons of Anarchy. I'd put that in the Top 20, despite a meh third season and a dumb ending. As for Chernobyl, I'm hesitant. I've never liked the whole "English-speaking/accented Russians" thing and was glad when that got left behind in the 1990s sometime. It might be a great show, but I'm petty and that might distract me too much.

I recommend The Americans wholeheartedly. I remember reading that the showrunners admitted that the first season was a crossroads for them; deciding between being a "spy show" or a show about interpersonal relationships. Ultimately, they decided the latter was the better choice, ratings be damned, and while the ratings were pretty bad, the product is amazing.

I'm with you here. I've tried a couple times and couldn't get into it.

I'm petty too but that only distracted me for a couple of minutes. The show is too good to center your concentration on that.

I also forgot "Southland," which should have rightfully been on my list. VERY underrated cop show. And "Mad Men" was disgustingly boring.

Nobody liked The Blacklist? I thought Spader was great in that show.

I also can’t understand how John Slattery got three Emmy nominations for his role in Mad Men. Was I watching the same show? Looked like an everyday network show “boss” that I’ve seen a million times. I can’t recall any range of emotions for his character other than the exact same steady eddy character.

I avoid network television like the plague but he's a great actor and I've heard good things.

Damn shame there just wasn't much substance there, cause the cars, sets and wardrobes were great.

It's one of the few network shows we watch, primarily to see Spader just own it. That said, even though I couldn't quite winnow shows 11-30 down to a top 20 it wasn't among them. Southland, Deadwood and SOA were though, as was True Detective. And now, sadly, GoT dropped into that group.

Another show not mentioned is The Man in the High Castle.
You have to fight through the first few episodes but it’s worth it. Season 3 starts slow but by about episode 4 or 5 and the Julianna and joe Blake scene it’s great.

Spader is a national treasure. Even loved his role in The Office when others didn’t.

Without spoiling it, can you tell me if there is some kind of answers about the alternative reality? I liked the show for about 1.5 seasons but then moved on because I didn’t love it. But I’d pick it up again if it actually explores wtf is going in the metaphysical reality. I was afraid it was going to address this in a lazy way, with a “Germany won the war and they find themselves here so let’s role with it” instead of focusing on some weird things suggesting their universe is re-constructed and not reality, something they need to discover. Just feel so let down with shows that have weird, supernatural like undertones that appear discoverable but then are glossed over without proper focus and understanding.

They definitely explore that. The part of season 2 after you gave up addresses that.
As I said season 3 starts slow (at the end of 2 you’ll understand why) but then by episode 4 or 5 you’ll get hooked.

The newsletter wouldn’t be all sunshine and roses. Own your own business, work from home, get to take a nap (awesome.). Pay 7% self-employment tax, pay roughly 20K a year for health insurance premiums and costs, and be able to take very little vacation (not awesome.)

I don't watch any network tv except for sports. That's it. network tv is loaded down with politically correct kaka. Even the advertisements are nauseating.

So I'm on Episode 3 (I'll watch that one tonight) and yep, I'm sold. Great show so far. Hell of a cast.

Having had family who grew up in the Soviet Union, a lot of what is depicted rings very true. They've done well on the details for the most part. I recognize a couple of the locations they used in Vilnius to shoot. Pretty cool.
