Releases in a few hours on Netflix.

I know 2 people who saw it a couple weeks ago. They both liked it better than Goodfellas.

The reviews it's getting are off the charts.

Can't wait for 3.5 hours of Scorsese masterpiece

Good news on the reviews. I hope to watch it over the next few days.

Better than Goodfellas? That's an unfair comparison.

His longest and most expensive film he's ever made.

I am about 2 hours in. Love it

Didn't read the thread because I have no idea what this story is and if it is true or not and don't want any spoilers. 17 minutes in and I'm already sad it's only 3 1/2 hours long.

Loved it. But I had decided I loved it 17 minutes in and sometimes when I immediately like a movie I'll set aside a lot of criticism.

That being said, I don't have much in the way of criticism. It was great.

    Watched it last night.

It held my interest which is important.

It was a Once Upon a Time in America reunion

Not as good as Goodfellas. Not even close.

I thought it was excellent. The “better than Goodfellas” take is recency bias in action.

I mean, I liked it. I absolutely put it ahead of Casino.

To me it really was OUATIA part deux which is not a bad thing

I get that since it is Deniro, mafia, and Scorsese it's going to be compared to Goodfellas but it felt like a very, very different movie.

Goodfellas was about living life hard and fast and gave us a ton of insight into the inner-workings of the mob. I felt like this movie was more about

how loyalty to the mob cost him so much including a very close friend as well as a daughter and the respect of his other daughters. The extra 30 minutes at the end slow walking us through the crumbling remains of his life put a very melancholy touch on it. It's much more of a movie about loss and regret than Goodfellas.

"What kind of man makes a phonecall like that."

Comparing The Irishman to Goodfellas doesn't really make sense because they are not the same type of films. Goodfellas focused more on the glamor of being a gangster. The Irishman focused on the dark consequences of being a gangster, as evidenced by the last 40 minutes of the film.

I liked the film overall, but I do think it's a bit too long.

Any recommendations for Mafia/Organized crime movies? I just watched 'Once Upon a Time In America'. I appreciate it but I didn't enjoy it, if that makes sense. The 2nd rape scene was particularly grueling and came out of nowhere. For a lot of reasons I found the first rape to be a lot more ambiguous. I didn't really like the plot twist but I enjoyed some parts of the ending. I felt pretty much nothing about adult Noodles throughout most of the movie I didn't like him and I didn't dislike him, he just was there. I dunno, I'll need to think about it for a bit more but I enjoyed it less than I had hoped.

I've seen Donny Brasco, The Departed, Gangs of New York, Goodfellas, Casino, Godfather 1/2, Scarface, Black Mass, and A Bronx Tale.

Looking through lists of organized crime movies it looks like other than those there's a lot of hot garbage.

Watched it last night and was impressed. Obviously a bit long but some it resonated with me... especially if you can speak Italian if you are not Italian. In my own family, my father grew up speaking Yiddish and Italian before he learned English. Combined w a dark complexion, he was often mistaken for being Italian... He would often make conversation with matre' d in restaurant and they would ask what part of Italy he was from and he'd reply he was Jewish and they wouldn't believe him....

    Watched it last night.

    It was good, not great.

Deniro showed his age with the grocery clerk scene. Wonder why they didn’t redo that specific scene as it was a important one.

    American Gangster
Pope of Greenwich Village (might not be exactly what your looking for but it’s good)
Midnight run (one of the most underrated movies ever. The mafias in it but it isn’t about the mafia exactly. De Niro is the main character)

Have you seen Heat or Pulp Fiction?

Thanks, I'll check out the first two. I saw the others you listed and found them some degree of ok to great.

I think you’ll definitely like American gangster. Pope of Greenwich village isn’t exactly a mob movie though. Read a synop
