fire him.......no........it just exposes that maybe he wouldnt be the strong leader that a head coach has to be.......assuming that he liked his talent, but passed just because of the distraction and "things will happen"

I agree with Dungy's statement. And I agree that NBC should have the right to fire anyone as any business should. And I look for them to get rid of Dungy after this.

Sorry Icy, I'm not getting your point on Dungy or why he is being hypocritical.

The quote from his forward in the book ...

"because he has made the later chapters of his life better than the earlier ones.
And isn’t that what life is all about?"

Yes absolutely Tony ... that is a big part of what life is about ... and people need a chance, a break, someone to believe in them to get that chance to better themselves. At the time vick coming back to the NFL was every bit of a distraction as Mike Sam could be. someone gave Vick a chance in spite of the distraction but dungy does not believe Mike Sam is worth the same chance?

I find that very hypocritical ... why not just say what it is and be a man about it. I am very religious and his lifestyle is against my faith ... he still gets canned but at least he is speaking truthfully IMO.

Mike Sam is a marginal player ... as of now a possible JAG.
JAG's are usually not worth any distraction ... Dungy should have stuck to the football evaluation part of Sam ... just say right now he is a marginal prospect and leave it be. Personal feelings should not be part of Sam making a team ... but we know that is a factor in all sports but nobody says it.

No, he shouldn't fired. He should be called on it, which is exactly what the publicity does. Hopefully he'll apologize.

Let's modify what Dungy said this way, and pretend he's a white coach in the 1940s, when the NFL chose its first black NFL players.

"I wouldn't have taken him,'' Dungy told the Tampa Bay Tribune. “Not because I don't believe Kenny Washington should have a chance to play, but I wouldn't want to deal with all of it. It's not going to be totally smooth ... things will happen."

This from 1985 shows the hypocrite that is Tony Dungy:

do tell Tony about taking a chance and giving a guy a chance.
Tony was given huge chances by Chuck Noll at a time where there were few African-American coaches.

Dungy should crawl in a hole for saying this about Mike Sam.

It's really not hypocritical because his Vick point wasn't related to distractions. There's were many reason to not hire Vick, distraction is just one... One that Dungy didn't address. I think he was probably addressing the more obvious sociopathic behavior.

They say it all the time. Character issues, family man, good work ethic, more concerned about life after football, prima dona, immature, and the vague bad teammate. Coaches are constantly talking about this stuff and team cohesion.

Dungy didn't say anything bad about Sam. For Dungy, he probably has nothing against Sam except disagreeing with his sexual practices. It's the media's push to criticize Dungy's religious beliefs about homosexual acts. He and Sam may get along. But the press would bring too much trouble to him as Michael Sam's coach.

Like I said the same situation existed when Chuck Noll hired Dungy ..
It was easier for a coach to hire white assistant coaches ... but Noll took that chance with Dungy.

Is this much different than that ...
a coach taking a chance on a man who is willing to work hard to achieve a dream?

I have less problem with a person who has not made these quotes - who was not given chances.
Dungy was given a chance ... his family was also discriminated against publicly ...
Dungy's professional history I would think would make him more sensitive to this situation.

Or does he not think God has a plan for a gay football player ...
what if Mike Sam is God's plan?

Too many hypocritical statements are burying Dungy on this issue.

as to your press comments ... has the press done this to date with Sam and the Rams?

Sure, let's modify what Dungy said this way:
"I wouldn't have taken him,'' Dungy told the Tampa Bay Tribune. “Not because I don't believe Randy Moss, Corey Dillon, Richie Incognito, Rob Gronkowski, Plaxico Burress, Desean Jackson should have a chance to play, but I wouldn't want to deal with all of it. It's not going to be totally smooth ... things will happen."

Now it sounds like the kind of thing coaches say all the time, except Sam is your pet and the others aren't.

You have to invent a phrase to prove your point.

I used factual linked phrases to prove mine - actual quotes from Dungy.

sorry Bob ... Dungy is a hypocrite and you don't like it ... oh well ...

how about we leave it at that?

No because Jeff Fisher has no moral problem with homosexual acts. Dungy would get asked about it and then a firestorm would ensue after he expressed his views which he gets from the Bible.

Dungy is getting a pass for what he said because he is black. How can anyone not see that?

Dungy's point was that he was not given a huge chance, that he earned the chance and that helping others earn the chance was the goal. Not giving people chances, letting them earn them. The lower ranks had few black football coaches, and just handing them a job was not a good plan unless it was a plan to watch them fail. Dungy made himself valuable as a coach. He wasn't some marginal guy who stomped his feet because he wasn't handed the keys to the stadium.

He was against dog and pony shows meant to give black coaches jobs to drum up attention then. He's against it for the same reason now with Sam= not hypocritical. You just don't like it or him. Which is fine, but put the sanctimony away just cuz your favorites aren't his.

Dungy says God has a plan for everyone ... what if NFL Mike Sam is God's plan?
Or does Dungy just use the god's plan when it fits his narrative ...

He's a hypocrite Boogs ... he's not the first and won't be the last.
It's just sad when a man who has faced discrimination in his career supports it upon others.
