Lowrie isn't the best but he's better than what they have, he still has a lot to prove but his upside is better than an out of place 2nd baseman and minor league players that won't sniff Boston unless they drive through it.

Lowrie got hurt April 11th, over a week into the season. He didn't go into the season without a proven shortstop, he already had a full half season at the position already

Spring Training started about four months after the season ended, it was fully healed.

If he re-injured it before the season started he never told the staff that he re-injured it or that it was hurting him at all until April 11th when played his last game before the DL.

Players like Nomar don't exist anymore because of steroids testing. SSs aren't going to hit 40 HRs and play decent defense.
