Or - Why Typos Really Do Matter.

SPRINGFIELD -- The last name of Green Party gubernatorial candidate Rich Whitney is misspelled as "Whitey" on electronic-voting machines in nearly two dozen wards -- about half in predominantly African-American areas -- and election officials said Wednesday the problem cannot be corrected by Election Day.

The misspelling turned up on touch-screen machines in 23 wards overall. Whitney's name is spelled correctly on the machines' initial screens showing all of the candidates' names, but it is misspelled on review screens that later show a voter his or her choices, said Jim Allen, spokesman for the Chicago Board of Elections.

"This is a difficult situation. We'll make the best of it. But the important thing is the name is spelled correctly where it counts, and that's where people are making the selection," Allen said.

Allen said there is not adequate time to reprogram and test machines before Nov. 2.

OMG, we need to fix a single letter? That will take MONTHS! I guess we just go with the typo. That's just a sad statement to the inefficiency of government.

Actually, it's a sad statement to the inefficiency of a private company who was contracted to set-up the machines.

Opps. So much for jumping to conclusions without bothering to check the facts.

Now the board has to reprogram and test some 4,200 voting machines in the 1,400 precincts. The effort is expected to cost tens of thousands of dollars, a sum that Election Board spokesman Jim Allen says the board will try to recover from the the company that set up the machines, Dominion Voting Systems.

A spokesman for Dominion confirmed that the mistake was the result of a typographic error made by an employee preparing the ballot and that the company “regrets the error.”

Don't ballots typically have a full name and middle initial e.g.

    Richard X. Whitey

They are contracted by the government yes? They may not directly be government workers, but they have to jump through all of the hoops put in place by the government.

I would imagine they state your given name - and a middle initial would be personal preference - lots of people don't use them routinely.

So, if the guy's name is Rich, it's Rich. Not every Rich is a Richard just like not every Joe is a Joseph or every Bob is a Robert.

It was probably done intentionally. Imagine the uproar if it were some typo involving a minority. Shank Sharpton and Jesse Jackass would be done there calling every white guy a hymie. :D
