He did good. Smart. Storm surge in the Keys is deadly. As long as he's inland a few miles he should be OK.
My winter home is in West Bradenton, Perico Island. Not good. The only saving grace probably not enough, is that Anna Maria Island is a barrier island shielding us from big waves on top of the storm surge.
The Keys are likely leveled. We'll see when the smoke clears. But they got hit head on with a Category 4 and it's now a Category 2. Some moron rode out the storm on a live cam down there while on a sail boat. Hope he lived but, if not, then it's population control since he has nobody to blame but himself.
Center of storm is now about 100 miles away. Should be where I am about 1-2 am.
I'd prefer it to stay over land, as odd as that sounds. If it moves west over the gulf it will strengthen and we'll get hit harder.
Lights have flickered a few times but thankfully we still have electricity. Winds sound like a strong nor'easter. Rain is currently about the same, no harder than a typical strong Florida summer rain storm. It just goes on longer rather than rain hard and end like it usually does in FL (keeps raining like a NE storm).
If you don't hear back from me by half time of tonight's game you'll know that I'm without power.
Don't die, I have some "I Told you so's" that I want you to read at some point this season.
I think this year I'm gonna finally cave and buy a generator
I kinda wanna play with a couple of cheap solar panels feeding some batteries and the dealies you need to get A/C off of them. I've seen plans out there but with solar getting cheaper and cheaper it might be a nice back-up to my back-up.
I really don't get people like that.
I swear people like that at their core just depressed
Im looking at that also. Problem is that option is $20k more. However the AC bill will go down substantially
The ones I was looking at were like, $300 3-4 years ago. We're talking ****ty China solar panel, a car battery, a wooden box and an inverter or something. I'm not a electricity scientician so I have no idea beyond that.
The $20k options are like, powering your whole house via solar/wind feed a Tesla battery cabinet, etc, right?
If power backup is something you are looking for you could start with the battery storage and the inverter which could be charged with your current AC feed and then later add the panels. Basically the more batteries the more storage.
The $20k was for tankless hot water / elec and emergency gen w 8 batteries .
I'm not rich but the long term economics does make it sensible.
But will you like it better tomorrow?
Tequila/rum all did me in back when I was a drinker.
In my thoughts. Hoping it weakens and passes sooner rather than later. God bless.
My Brother is stuck in Clearwater Beach in a high rise on the 7th floor.....Been laid up with a bad foot infection for nearly a month. Building is just about deserted and elevator has been shut down since yesterday....He's not connected to facebook on messenger so I am assuming he lost power......
Still more of the same here right now. Still have electricity and internet for the time being. Sounds and feels like your basic nor'easter. Hopefully all that time over land has weakened Irma. Got a long ways to go though.
jmt.......where are you located?
Mid-Pinellas county, Clearwater/Largo border.
About 4.5 - 5 miles inland from the Gulf.
I slept thru the last hurricane up here in Mass. Tree came down across the street from our house as I slept on the couch.........
Strong winds right now - definitely not safe to go outside at the moment - but it looks like we may have dodged a bullet here (knocks on wood). Lights have flickered on and off several times and I hear transformers buzzing somewhere nearby when that happens, but I'm happily surprised we still have power. It looks like it is going to pass to the north of me (it's about 20 miles east/southeast of Tampa right now; I'm about 20 miles west of Tampa) with nothing more than more strong winds - but no damage or flooding expected in my neck of the woods.
Thanks to all for your prayers and well wishes.
