If you pray, keep Tampa/St. Pete in them. Irma is now projected to make a direct hit there and, since it was projected to move northeast before, most in that area didn't evacuate. Tampa is a disaster waiting to happen. They've been dealing with rising sea levels there for years and they are now evacuating 260,000 people ahead of what they expect to be a 15 ft. storm surge. Many analysts have said Tampa is the most vulnerable area in the U.S. to flooding and shoreline damage from a major storm.

    Florida’s losses from a big hurricane could reach a mind-blowing $200 billion

My sister-in-law lives in a mobile park in Ellenton. She has been evacuated and
will spend the next few days at her jobsite which is the county jail.

I've got quite a few friends over there. Most of them are out as of today but some are still there. The area will flood badly.

I'm riding the storm out here in mid-Pinellas County (west of Tampa, on the Gulf of Mexico). For five days I was sure we would only get a bid of residual rain and wind while the storm traveled north along the east coast, and then the track suddenly shifted. Starting to get a little breezy here right now. Sooner or later the electric will go out, and then who knows how long until it comes back on. Cooking plenty of food tonight to get through the apocalypse. Fortunately I am relatively high (26 feet above sea level) and dry, for the moment, and not on the beach (about 4-5 miles inland) nor on the inter coastal.

This sucks. No way this thing doesn't kill some people even in the best case scenario. Praying for Tampa.

That whole Gulf coastline from Naples to Ft. Myers to Venice to Tampa has a lot of narrowing inlets and offshore shallows which make it especially vulnerable to storm surge. I am on the East Coast, a long way (120 miles) from the projected path of the eye.

We returned home today from Orlando, rather than head to Georgia, when the path moved and it appeared that our Georgia destination was less safe than home.

Riding it out here, well-shuttered and safe, expecting 5-10 inches of rain and strong winds, but likely less than hurricane force. We will be fine. But the lower Keys and West Coast.... yikes.

My father and sister are there sheltering in place. She is supposed to be on "high ground" at an elevation of 25 feet. Expecting to lose communications when it hits tomorrow night. Hoping for the best.

@jmt57 Good luck, bud. I'm expecting we won't hear from you for a little while after the lights go out, but please check in when you can. Hoping it's a 3 and not a 4 when it hits you. Fill your bathtub so you'll be able to flush your toilet. I'm positive you'll lose water utilities as well.

I don't pray. So can't say. I'm merely keeping them in my thoughts. Some people do. You're hoping Tampa gets completely annihilated?

Prayers to everyone in Florida. My father owns 2 houses in Port charlotte and he told the tenants to get out and leave the state for their own safety. He is anticipating losing both of his rental properties to hurricane Irma.

There's plenty of room for this storm to be nowhere near as bad as the media is predicting, and still do an awful lot of damage and claim some lives

As someone who went through Katrina I can tell you that I'd rather them over hype it and get people to evacuate just in case.
