We need 2 quarterbacks: a future top 10 QB and a 1-2 year bridge. As of now, we have Cam.

Phase 1
--------
Choose a backup/bridge quarterback from among the free agents. Presumably, all the available quarterbacks were evaluated. Belichick chose Cam. Please correct me if you think that any free agents are still out there that Bill might choose to upgrade Cam.

Phase 2
--------
We could trade for the backup QB on a team that is drafting one of the top 3 or even the top 5 quarterbacks. This could happen before the draft, during or after.

Phase 3a
--------
This is the top 15 picks of the draft. Do we get one or not? We would still need a backup/bridge. It seems likely that the top 5 will be gone by Pick 12.

Phase 3b
---------
Ok, we've failed to get anyone in free agency, and in the top of the draft. Now what? Should we take a stud at 15, and hope to move up to get one of the quarterbacks we want? More likely would be trade down in the HOPE that we will get one of the quarterbacks we want.

Phase 4
--------
Perhaps, we will still be scrambling to trade for a backup, or signing one in free agency.
=========================
MY HOPE
is that we trade for one of the backups (perhaps with the jets, the jags or SF) AND draft a potential quarterback of the future.

You are making things more complicated than they are.

If a vet QB option of interest becomes available at a acceptable price point that player might be brought in to compete with Cam for the QB1 position.

If we end up drafting a QB in the draft it won't affect the QB1 question unless that rookie is a GOAT level learner that can absorb, understand and recall everything thrown at him at a high level proficiency. Odds are no matter where we take a QB, be it #7, #97 or with our final pick that player will sit at least through a red shirt year.

The decision tree is really not bigger than that.

Third String But Playing on Special Teams
Personally I think we bring in a vet (guess Jimmy, maybe Mariota) AND draft a QB they want to take over in yr 2. There was no way they were going to go into free agency with Stidham at QB, but Patriot Twitter seem to see Cam as the ceiling, not the floor

So, you are saying that Cam is likely to be our starter. Have the best off season ever, and then start Cam. How very sad.

I don't buy the 49ers bluffs, I would be shocked if Jimmy is still a 9er by draft time as the best suiter is NE.

I am saying that whichever vet QB will look most solid during camp will be the starter.

If that is Cam then so be it. If its Mariota or a more realistic version of JG (ie. 3rd round + heavily restructured contract leaving SF to pick up the tab) then its one of them. Add additional names if you want.

One thing I am fairly certain about is that no draft pick from 2020 is going to be QB1 unless a lot of injuries hit.

Yup. If they go QB in the draft then Cam is clearly the bridge. We won 7 games with him in a year where we had nothing in terms of quality receivers, Cam didn’t have a full off-season and had Covid and we were missing starters as a result of Covid. I don’t think for a minute that Cam is a particularly good answer but with a full off-season, a much improved offensive roster and a much better defense an extra three wins doesn’t seem like an impossibility and a shot at the playoffs.

So, Rosen will start until their draftee is ready?
He'll start now as he did with RGIII. Shanahan is an arrogant guy and former players say he has a motto as recently referenced on the Pat McAfee show is "the best QB is the next QB" as he thinks his plays will work with anybody. In fact, JT O'Sullivan has referenced the same thing right after the Super Bowl loss to the Chiefs that he believes more in his plays than the QB.

When a team trades up that much for the next QB, Jimmy knows his time is up. It's best for both parties to just move on but I'm sure Jimmy wants that $26M this year.

I think that Mariota just signed and will stay. I don't your SF scenario happening. Other than Darnold, I have no other quarterbacks to add. It is looking more and more like Cam for a year or even more.

Is that why over the last 4 years the 49ers are:

22-8 with Jimmy
7-27 without Jimmy

:haha:

2nd Team Getting Their First Start
Assuming Jimmy doesn’t shake free Cam is the bridge guy. He can show the young guy how to prepare like a pro, how to carry oneself, he’s not good so it will be no problem to pull him when the time is right and he’s cheap.

I thought that facts/stats are not allowed on this site
While those facts are true, then why are they trading up to #3 to take a QB?

I'm just relaying what former players have said about Shanahan. Maybe Shanahan is finally realizing this isn't Madden Football and needs a competent QB.

What's your point?

That JG -- in one of those rare occurrences when he doesnt knock himself out for a season -- is better than Beathard or Mullins ?

Nobody needs to do any research to understand that. His contract reflects that potential.

What is also true is that we have seen Cam Newton making better decisions when it comes to his own health despite being a designated rushing option than JG has been able to do in the friggin pocket.

Jimmy has been consistently dangerously reckless when it comes to allowing hits since 2016 and this doesn't make him tough but a dumbass.

That is why the 49ers are investing so much to look for an upgrade.

Stidham is still on the roster, don't sleep on Stiddy! :ninja:
What are the odds for Stidham being the future QB?
I'm just wondering if he offers enough to survive as QB 2/3 after we add a rookie or trade for another young guy.

I want both. Trade for either Mariota or Garrapolo, and get one of the top 5 QB prospects in this draft. If they go into the season with that type of mix I will feel ok about it. It doesn’t mean they have solved the issue but at least they are trying like hell to,
