Zum....7 WR's including Slater is a bit much. And where are all the Special Teams only players ?

QB (3): Jones, Hoyer, Zappe
RB (4): D. Harris, Stevenson, Montgomery, Strong
WR (5): Parker, Bourne, Meyers, Agholor, Thornton
TE (2): Henry, Smith
OL (9): Brown, Strange, Andrews, Onwenu, Wynn, Herron, Ferentz, Cajuste, Hambright
DL (5): Godchaux, Guy, Barmore, Anderson, Ekuale
EDGE (5): Judon, Wise, Jennings, Uche, Perkins
LB (4): Bentley, McMillan, Wilson, McGrone
CB (6): Mills, Mitchell, Jo. Jones, M. Jones, J. Jones, Bethel
S (5): McCourty, Phillips, Dugger, Peppers, Bledsoe
ST (5): Folk, Bailey, Cardona, Slater, Davis

  • Light on RB/TE, but no one's really worth it. I listed Montgomery as RB to balance out the numbers but for all we know he's viewed as more of a WR.
  • No real idea how to pick between the OL reserves right now, I don't feel strongly about my picks here.
  • I don't really see a good reason to keep Henry Anderson on the roster but reports seem to indicate the team still likes him.
  • Haven't heard encouraging things about Perkins or Uche, but some solid things about Jennings. Still not a fan of the edge group.
  • Somehow, one or both of Tavai/Langi are going to make the team, but I'm holding out hope for now.
  • I know, no Butler. It's just impossible to deny what I've read about the camp battle. Mitchell has been looking legitimate as an outside starter, and Butler has been inconsistent at best. Maybe he can shake the rust off and make me look stupid, I hope he does.
  • Wade and/or Bryant might find a way onto the 53, but we can't really cut either of the Jones rookies. Maybe Bethel is gone this year, but he provides a lot of ST value.
  • With the emergence of Bledsoe, that's a really nice safety group. Enough depth that you can comfortably play Peppers, Phillips, and Dugger at LB as much as you want. Maybe that leads to us keeping fewer LB.
I'm sure my mind will change about a lot of this after not much time.

Yes but on PUP, PS or something...IMO
Unless he has a terrible camp, you're asking for trouble putting a 4th round rookie with that speed on the practice squad as some RB needy team will scoop him up.

RULE 23: All 4th rounders make the roster unless they are put on IR.

COMMENTS
1. Having Zappe on IR won't help him or the team.
2. I strongly disagree with Harris over Strong. Why?
3. 4 WR position WR's is more likely than 6, although I am fine with 5.
4. As has always been the case, Belichick will replace some of these with ST starters like Bethel and Davis.

COMMENTS - SPECIAL TEAMS
1) I would list Montgomery and Bethel as special teamers, As you said, Tavai or Langi might sneak on, but I expect Wilson to take the STer spot at LB (we usually have one in that role).

COMMENTS - OFFENSE
2) One more RB seems right, although we could start where you are and pick up someone before Game 2.
3) I see us signing a backup OG. Hambright is a reasonable placeholder.

COMMENTS -DEFENSE
4) I don't see us with 5 position safeties. To keep Bledsoe, I think that we would need to cut one of the EDGE players (I vote for Jennings). I see Wilson as a key STer.
5) Isn't Ekuale on a 2-game suspension?

BOTTOM LINE
I suspect that a 50 man roster is fine to start, losing Hambright, Ekuale and Jennings from your 53. There will be injuries and acquisitions before Game 2.

Good catch on Ekuale, that might actually be a blessing in disguise given how much competition there is for those last few spots.

A good thing to remember when making these rosters: Based on last year, there were 6 players who played more than 40% of the ST snaps, while playing less than 10% of snaps on offense or defense (not including the usual three specialists like K, P, LS):

Slater
Bethel
Davis
King
Olszewski
Tavai

You could also count Bolden, who played almost 70% of the ST snaps but obviously had to play a lot of offense last year as well out of necessity.

So that's 4 DB sized guys, 2 LB sized guys, and a Bolden type who's kind of a tweener, that are probably going to make this team as primarily special teamers.

Yes, let's include. Bolden AND Johnson. Someone needs to replace the ST snaps of both of these. That's 11 STer, including the 3 specialists.

Slater, Bethel, Davis

Jones replaces Olszewski as a STer

Wilson replaces King as a STer
TBD (2021 Tavai)

I might cut the clone of Anfernee Jennings for an 8th OL.

There are going to be some very difficult cuts. Some comments on roster projections:

-I believe L. Ray is making the team
-At this point, I believe Nixon is on the team
-Hambright over Sherman on the o-line
-Jennings is making the team
-I think Bryant and Langi are off
-Trending that the 2nd ufa making the team is Schooler
-Can Pharms or Roberts beat out Davis on the D-line, I'm guessing not, but we'll see
-Montgomery is a lock to make the team
-I think at this point Bledsoe and Wade are on the team.

Just a few thoughts!!!

I think these are all valid. A couple of caveats:

1.) One caution is that ray was eternally injured at alabama and we are coming up on preseason games. Will he stay healthy for 3 games?
2.) offensive guard is getting interesting and onwenu is literally playing his way off the team. Hambright seems better in zone at this point.
3.) defensive racket is going to be a huge battle. Barmore and godchaux appear to be locks! After that whoever steps forward could make this team.

Why would you cut Jennings?
