No, Charles Mingus and Lennie Tristano would be not for me. Generally unintelligible and ridiculously profane is my opinion and I don't need any clarification from anyone.

Just a thought: using a memorial thread for a respected man who died as a forum to attack him and his whole profession may not be the best way to position yourself as a defender of traditional decency.

In the 90's, I lived in the same apartment building on W57th St as Nipsey Russell in NYC.

"Strictly Business"-EPMD, "Yo! Bum Rush the Show" by Public Enemy were good albums. Grandmaster Flash's stuff was pretty good. I kind of checked out around the time of "gansta rap" and the rise of white rappers.

In fairness, we’ve had countless threads (in this sub-forum) memorializing other deceased public/popular figures, including musicians.

It’s labeled as “OT”, which is common practice.

They ALL should have been posted in the Pub Forum. That's what the Pub Forum is for: OT subject matter unrelated to football. People are misusing the OT designation in the main Patriots forum -- all OT threads in this forum should be football-related. It's how Ian designed the site. (I've misused it myself in the past but try to be mindful of not doing so.)

Honestly, I said the same thing. Then again, I'm a cranky old man (I'm 56). I don't think very highly of today's Rap (hip hop, whatever). To me, the greatest of all time was Rakim, from Eric B & Rakim. NOBODY can flow rhymes like Rakim.

That being said, a very sad situation, my thoughts go out to Nipsey's friends and family.

I don't care what anyone says. Ice-Ice Baby is a GREAT song. My buddy had a New Years Eve wedding a few years ago and the DJ played this. Everyone used their horns playing the Queen/bass beat. It was awesome.

...or if when Biggie and TuPac passed now as opposed to over 20 years ago this thread would be 10 pages.

No offense to Nipsy but it's just the average age of this board

When I drive my son back and forth to college I suffer through the hip hop channels on Sirius ... mostly channel 44.

So just last week I see Nipsy Hussle come on and I start laughing. I then explain to my son who Nipsey Russel was and about being on Laugh In or whatever it was called.

Anyways this Nipsey us greatly respected for coming up as an indie artist. Was a member of crips at one point. Got out of that and tried to do good for kids. He was supposed to meet with the LA chief od police today to discuss ways to help do some good. He said yesterday before his death it was good to have enemies.

Anyways RIP ... 2 kids lost a daddy.

This is true, but we sure seem to be lowering the bar on what celebrities qualify to be the subject of a main-forum-but-OT thread.

I mean, it used to be that when a big name celebrity died, it would make the main forum. Then it moved to lesser name but still commonly-known celebrities being discussed in the main forum. Now we have a guy whom I'd venture the majority of forum members had never even heard of.

Why tf are people turning this into a thread about what rap they like, rap being bad or not knowing the guy.

Imagine if the bassist from Cheap Trick, or however. dies at 82 and a thread gets posted. I don't like their music and I don't know who he is but I stay away from those threads out of respect.

Why is this any different, jesus.
