OT-ish: The gambling thread

More than half my football bank which sits at $3k heading in.

Well in that case I would probably agree as the difference makes up a decent percentage of your bank roll.

I’m not sure it’s something I’d want to have to put an extra 3 or 400 on. But for me it’s only 20.

My 'system' (such as it is) revolves more around how I manage my roll than about some tried and true methodology as pertains to my picks. I begin with a number I am comfortable losing. For football it's usually @ $1500 but double that this year thanks to a good run at the end of last year and a very profitable playoff streak that allowed me to pay some of The Man's money forward to this season. I had a sick Week 17 (when does that ever happen?) The amount of my bets are adjusted through the season based in no small part on whether I am using The Man's money or my own. I do it that way not because I respect found money any less than I do my own but because should my entire buy in become depleted I am done like yesterday's dinner until the next season.

I may paint outside the lines just a touch on the win total though, currently the poker fund's warchest is flush. I could justify drawing it down on a one time throw without undue risk for a number as attractive as that 11 looks.

That’s a good way to do it. The comfortable losing part... this is what I do with Blackjack. I should start doing that with sports.

Just a final thought in the value thing with a line that came to me. Barca is -175 to win La Liga. They realistically should probably be atleast -200 and probably -230. So -175 IMO on that bet would be good value

It's how I do poker (yearly allotment) as well as the NFL & NHL (seasonal allotments). Any other bets are just occasional one offs. When we make the rare casino trip outside of poker, which has it's own budget, I set a limit on the trip as a whole with per day table limits inside that bank. Sports gambling for me is something that adds to my enjoyment of the seasons and usually provides a modest profit. Poker is a passion, not that profit isn't nice but it's not why I play. I am every bit as content playing quarter, half, buck in a neighborhood game as I am at a $5k table. I just love the game itself.

Are you playing Texas holdem? 3 card?

I recently had a 23-8 tear through MLB. That’s about a .750 winning percentage over a fairly decent sample size. It’s like going 6-2, but for 4 straight rounds. Straight up, run lines, totals—you name it. I was on that stuff heavy for about a month.

Unfortunately, as my streak progressed, I made the mistake of tightening up my bankroll a bit, simply because I felt that I was due to lose. It probably sounds stupid, but for those that have been in that situation, it seemed as though guaranteeing myself a payday outweighed the idea of “all or nothing.” I’m not much of a gambler, so I didn’t make nearly what I should have, but boy did I go on an epic run.

That's a helluva run by any definition. Football is the only sport in which I have engaged in all or nothing bets off a running bankroll. Even then I don't do it often and usually confine it to Conference Championship or Super Bowl games that are to my way of thinking just too attractive to pass up. Most recently that was the SB with the Pats -1, had I been able to get in during the nano second they were at +3 I might have gone batsh!t and risked condideraby more. This past AFCCG on the other hand I did not care for and made what was probably my lowest CCG bet in 10 years.

Got 2 two team teasers

Pats and Hawks +8.5 55 to win 50

Redskins and Texans +7.5 55 to win 50

Unless I had some inside/closely watched info on a team, I couldn’t bet preseason football. I think I recently read something that claimed that 2/3 of the games over the past few years have been -3 or less, just because no one really knows WTF to do.

There are situations where we know Belichick and his preseason trends, so that could help with NE, but I think it’s a terribly risky proposition.

I completely get that and still kinda feel that way. I’m basically just experimenting with Wong teasers in the preseason to see if they can be as profitable as they are in the regular season. -5 bucks so far

I enjoy reading this thread but I don't gamble much. I like regular poker as opposed to hold 'em but I'm not a good player.

One time many moons ago we were playing a friendly game of 55, which for those who may not know is 5 cards in your hand and 5 common cards in the middle. I was dealing so I had to flip the cards. When I opened my hand I had two pair, jacks and nines.

As I started flipping the cards a jack turned up in the middle giving me jacks full of nines. Then another one came up and I had four jacks. As the hand ended I called four jacks and the two players left, after all the raises, started to complain. How could I have 4 jacks when they said they each had one. That's when I looked at my hand and realized that I only had the two nines and one other card left. The two jacks I put in the middle were the two I had.

In my defense I was pretty messed up at the time, but instead of getting too angry I just stood up, walked out, got in my car and went home.

Love this thread.

Even though sometimes I don’t understand a single word of the post.

I use Bov/BookMkr/MyBky & a local if I have to. Never had any problems $ out but I'm sure every shop has a bad apple or two. I'd recommend the w 1st two shops for sure. I use Bov prob the most & they had np $ out a nice size sum a few years ago.
Like, I’d rate this post genius if only someone will explain it to me...LOL

Drunken dealing...sh!t happens lol

As with most jargon the original intent was to simplify. And as with most jargon...you can see how well that eventually worked out ;)

I’ve noticed that you’re a man who likes his teasers. I can get down with them, as long as they’re only 2 teamers. I haven’t followed preseason spreads, but judging by the odds I’m guessing they were 6 pointers?
