This was a surprisingly open chat about Cam Newton's recent year. With Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson, Fred Taylor.

A couple things:
- They clearly all respect Cam so much but also was very impressed how classy and mature and a leader Cam is the entire interview.
- They call out things that he deflects and takes responsibility. They try to pin the Seattle loss on an idiot McDaniels play-call and Cam defends.
- They talk about Cam starting great the first 3 weeks then Covid hit. Cam talks about , around the 7 minute mark, how it was like going to a highway rest stop and you come out and the bus had left him behind. Who knows who's fault it was to totally change the whole terminology while Cam was out (I won't say it). I wonder if Cam's season would have been different without Covid messing up a whole month.
- A lot of talk too about Belichick and the Patriots. Cam all class.

The trajectory of his performance leads me to think the problem wasn’t lack of preseason or covid (outside of the sf/den games right after).

he looked good the first 3 weeks, 1 yard from 3-0.
Looked poor the next 2 post covid games.
Then i thought he looked okay against buf(till the fumble), nyj, bal, and Houston. Not great but good enough to complement a strong run game and defense if THEY performed. We could have won all of these if not for the fumble in Buffalo and the defense showed up in Houston.
then sucked the next 5 games, really bad before a good outing against nyj in a meaningless game.

If covid/ no preseason was the problems his play should have been strongest towards the end, but that was actually the weakest. Looked more a case of teams adjusting to him after the good start.

The bus didnt leave him behind, he attended all the online meetings.

Not the same thing. Probably the most important thing about actual practice is timing and developing chemistry, so in that sense, the bus leaving the highway is a good metaphor, actually. Things move so fast in the NFL, if you're not ascending, you're playing catchup. And it doesn't seem like anyone got on the same page again, then Cam got injuried seriously enough to affect his throwing mechanism.

Not defending him, but as usual, there's more to the situation than what we all know.

He missed what? Maybe 3-4 practices? During his covid spell, they shut down the facility. The rest of team wasn't practicing together either.

I appreciate Cam taking the high road here...but he is done as a starting NFL QB. This is all PR for his next contract, if it happens.

1 Cam had a TD in Seattle if he ran wide outside.
2 Its the era of PC arse kissing. Never call anybody out on the carpet or youll be cancelled. Dance around the truth but never go full reality.
3 Cam stinks. He had passing issues well before NE. Norv Turner boosted Cam passing numbers for 10 games under his tutelage.
4 Its 2020, yeah, hey why not Cam in NE ? This might actually work.

If you listen to the video he said the terminology completely changed by the time he came back. That doesn't seem like smart management of the offense to not realize your covid QB needs some help integrating back. It's clear Cam was not good for the month he came back with Covid fog. Although someone else made a good point that he didn't really finish strong either except for one game at the near-end. I think it's weird how off his throws were, makes me wonder if he had arm damage. Or is it correctable via a mechanics coach ? My guess would be injury.

Cam could not physically throw worth a damn past like the 3 game mark or something. He either got hurt or just was in steep decline in general.

Did they ask about Cam's unwillingness to tutor Stidham?

You mean it was on the new guy who joined 2 months ago to teach the 2 year Patriot vet who thought he had the job handed to him , went to Texas for the summer, and left early at work ?

You mean the 10 year veteran with a league MVP that had the reputation of a leader and was the starter didn't need to help his backup? Good thing Drew didn't think like that.

Anyway, did they ask Cam that? Probably not.

He did have 3 shoulder surgeries. guys with shoulder issues tend to get worse over the season. Look at Drew Brees. The hail mary where he only made it to the 20 yard line shows his arm strength was significantly weaker. The fact that he threw so few passes and his arm still looked like that is concerning.

Now, the caveat is, he wasn't put in the best situation. no tight ends, basically 1 1/2 receivers. most QB's would struggle with that. We saw brady struggle in 2019 in the 2nd half of the season once Gordon/AB were gone with this sorry set of guys....and Josh McDaniels playcalling showed that they didnt have the personnel running trick plays and such to scheme guys open.

But the balls that went into the dirt on screen passes or short passes were a concern, as was that he only threw 8 TD's and 3 of them were in the Jets game. And the hail mary that failed to make it to the 20 yard line

The question is, say they sign an allen robinson, bring in Kyle rudolph and upgrade the receiver positions. How much would cam newton improve?

how much does Bill view last year as the receiving talent vs. cam newtons decline? or was it both? I think its abit of both.

Totally Eliot Wolf’s fault. Wolf demanded that MacDaniels change all offensive terminology to completely ruin Newton’s chance of success. And Wolf clearly did this at Chad O’Shea’s insistence. O’Shea has been the puppet master ever since he left NE.

My thoughts. Can you teach and old dog new tricks? Cam, i going to keep it buck with you. As a fan the only video i want to see IS you talking WITH your quarterbacks coach going over last years game film. I want to see him teach you how to throw a 10 yards or less accurate soft pass to a back or tight end. I want too see you throw over offensive lineman hands TOUCH pass. I want you to go thru your progressions in slow motion. I want you to have the work ethic of Tom Brady! Get that goshdog cigar out ya mouth, stop listening to Ocho talking about your health and help the fans get on your side as you our SO FAR STARTING QB! Show the Owner, show the teammates, show the fans, show yourself in a great light. Big oppurtunity, don't F it up. You'll make a great talkshow host later.
