Hated it. A lot of it felt forced and cheesy to me. Some of it was so bad it just like broke immersion for me. And I get it, it' star wars but it just really didn' work for me at all.

It was very good. Only negative was they were heavy handed on the humor.

    Absolutely god awful movie

    Spoilers

The Fin storyline was absolutely pointless. The hours long chase scene was an awful idea. One of the lamest thing I've ever seen a movie. Snoke was supposed to be a big bad, with epic level force abilities, and some intense skywalker hate and he's gone with 0 explanation of how he came to be who he was. Flying zombie Leia was horrible, and I cringed watching it

The worst was what they did to Luke. Instead of Luke coming back as the wisest, most powerful, and all around most bad ass Jedi ever; he comes back as a whiny old codger that does nothing but force project a hologram.

Add in the cringey forced humor, the SJW forced feminism roles, and you have one of the most disappointing movies I've ever seen.

    "the SJW forced feminism roles"

Gee whiz...you mean this particularly virulent "ism' that's been volcanic the past decade and a half has inundated the Sci-fi genre?

I enjoyed it. The forced attempts at humor seem to be out of place in a Star Wars movie though...

consider myself a star wars fan. the movie wasn't perfect and had its flaws but i thought the good moments outshined the bad ones. would rank it close to TFA. personally give it a 4/5.

I liked it. But it didn't feel like other Star Wars movie. I think that's the disconnect.

If it wasn't a part of the Star Wars franchise and was released under a different title with different characters, I think most of the people hating it would actually like it. It's got some pretty funny bits and it's entertaining.

But there's an expectation level of what it should be, and I understand how die-hards feel like it didn't "fit" with the rest of the movies. There were also a lot of theories going around about what would happen, and pretty much none of them were right, so a lot of people feel like it didn't do what it should have done.

So I can see how critics liked it, while fans didn't. It's the reverse of Twilight, where critics thought it was terrible but fans loved it way more.

I agree with most of what you say except about Luke. I loved his different perspective on the Jedi Order and thankfully he explained what the force actually is, not just a Jedi exclusive powers.

Movie industry has inflitrated the ratings reviews. War of the planet of the apes 92% give me a break.

I saw it and it was ok. About 3 great scenes.
Just rolled my eyes at Leia's Starlord Galaxy of heroes scene. Some of it was just plain bad. Left a lot of character development out that could of added to the story.

To be consistent with how we have stated things will go here prior to the start of the season, this thread will be moved. Might be inclined to keep it on a bye week but with the Steelers game today, it definitely belongs elsewhere.

That said, I reserve judgment. I’m almost glad to hear fans don’t like it because I’ve often found that I see a lot of movies with really high RT fan scores, then I actually see the film myself and I am really disappointed. I’ve enjoyed a lot more films that user reviews were bad on than the other way around. I don’t think the average person has any idea what they’re talking about when reviewing a film.

    Visually stunning

I credit RJ for having the balls to shift the series and take some risks.

    Rey/Kylo was great
Luke was awesome save a few moments where they tried to be humorous and over the top about him being crotchety. I thought the force projection was powerful and awesome.

Leia force pull wasn’t horrible in theory just terribly executed.

Finn/Rose was pretty bad in that it didn’t allow any development for Finn. I wish he would have sacrificed himself in his anger to stop the First Order. In the casino world stuff, He could have been being chased by Phasma or something cool instead.

I didn’t mind the misdirect with Snoke although I can understand the frustration with no background or having a cool theory background everyone has discussed for the past years.

Solid movie with some missteps. They nailed the key elements though and JJ will have to clean up some of the rest of the mess to finish strong. Sad but resolved ending for Luke.

It had it's warts, but I felt it was a lot better than what most people on here are saying. More along what I was expecting from Force Awakens.

This is the first year I won't see the latest star wars movie. I have had my fill. I'm tired of all the sequels and remakes from Hollywood. this i will pay to see.

And also the theme about failure. I forgot to mention Yodas scene which was perfect for this theme and the conclusion to the Luke story.

I know some fans would have preferred some epic Luke versus some epic Snoke or some iteration, but they went a different direction in order to finalize this being about Rey and Kylo. Luke’s major arc finished in ROTJ and it makes sense that he is imperfect and is not infallible, and his failure with Kylo led to where he is now. I don’t think they tied a bow on it without the how and why about Snoke turning Kylo unless they can somehow do that effectively in 9. I doubt they can after the fact.

It’s different but it works. There’s a lot of stuff that didn’t work. I do think Rian faltered on transitioning some of the items JJ set up in 7: Finn, arguably Snoke, Knights of Ren. There’s some continuity issues on a smaller scale too.

He invested a lot in a story that would focus on Rey/Kylo and to a degree, Luke, and he did that much well. Pretty good development on Poe as well.

Lucas or JJ may have built a more cohesive story here but I don’t think it would have been as good and held the test of the time. I don’t think it would have explored Luke, Rey and Kylo as well.

It sounds like Rian got to do what he wanted and didn’t have to satisfy the story board team at every turn which is what most were worried about.

Solid post. I'm definitely more down on the movie than you but you raise good points. One thing I disagree with though is Leia's Mary Poppins moment. No one should be able to survive floating through space without some sort of suit, even in Star Wars. So I think while terribly executed it was even worse in theory.

Even putting that aside, Leia may be force sensitive but she has no training with it. It would have been absurd even seeing the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy doing that, let alone a person with no Jedi training. Rolled my eyes watching that.

I agree mostly, but I think it could work with one of these or a combination of:
    a) Kylo pushes her back in
    b) Leia is closer to the ship (it wouldn’t look so terrible)
    c) some establishment of some force training over the years. She is obviously super force sensitive but it’s a bit of a leap to assume she can do that

I’m not sure on the mechanics of survival. Oxygen wise you can survive but don’t know how fast the pressure and cold kills you without a suit as you say

Can’t believe I left out the Score. As assumed, world class.

A bit heavy handed on the force theme, but at other times but good variations of it.

Good new elements and amazing use of tying in Kylo with parts of Han/Leia.

    Luke/Leia moment musically was perfect.

Actually enjoyed March of the Resistance in pieces in this movie more.

    Visuals+Music+key story-missteps = 7.5/10

    My new order:
    ESB
    ROTJ/ANH (interchange for me)
    TLJ
    ROTS
    TFA
    ——drop off
    (Rogue One)
    AOTC
    TPM

TLJ so close...ROTJ has similar hokey moments and missteps but overall continuity and even character building is better.

Need to rewatch to see if Finn didn’t go backwards off a cliff for me.

I think I’m ok with Snoke being a tool to play with Kylos battle with the light/dark but we need some tie in to why he was involved and around to twist Ben in the first place. I don’t need a Darth Plagueis or some elaborate back story now.
