Re: OT- Can Dennis and Callahan ever talk Sports

Although my politics are mostly middle of the road and liberal or conservative on certain issues, I find myself disagreeing with Callahan even when we are on the same side of an issue. Personally, I doubt real life John Callahan agrees with radio personality John Callahan on a lot of issues.

My problem is that we have four political stations in this town (NPR, 96.9, WRKO, and 1510). If I wanted to listen to politics in the morning, I would listen to them. The reason why Dennis and Callahan do what they do is because none of those stations have a strong morning drive radio show that draws ratings. WRKO doesn't get ratings until Laura Engrams comes on at 9AM.

Obviously, there are enough people in this town who disagree with me since they do great in the ratings. It just ain't my cup of tea. I do listen to political discussion from time to time, but it gets redundant.

Right leaning political talk has always been huge. There is a reason why guys like Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and at a local level Howie Carr are among the highest paid people in talk media (again Carr is at a local level where he is the highest paid local radio guy). No surprise that D&C would be successful following that formula.

But just because they are successful at it, doesn't mean I gotta like it or listen. I just wish one of the two sports radio station would have a listenable sports focused morning show.

D&C was excellent when they had on guests such as Schilling and Faxon as they brought a unique insider perspective that we don't normally get. They also have a good rapport with Boomer and another NFL guy who's name eludes me. But when there is no Pats or Sox game or golf major they get annoying.

They openly hate hockey and soccer and are very limited with hoops so their range is very limited sports-wise. They half-heartedly enlist Meterperell to talk college football but, like most of these hosts, seem too lazy to educate themselves beyond the Sox and Pats.

I don't mind a little political banter but they go overboard and it is not why I tune in to a sports station. And 98.5 in the morning can hardly be classified as a sports program and they are equally obnoxious, just with a different slant.

But they won't because they need the bigger drive time audience and consequent advt dollars to keep them in business. They know the audience sizes for pure sports with the smaller listenership ain't gonna generate the bucks.

Why does this topic get re-visited as often as it does? The answer to the question is two-fold:

    1.) D&C do talk sports

2.) Morning drive programming is different from the programming the rest of the day. Ratings matter. That's why a lot of sports stations run non-sports radio for part of their day. WFAN used to run Imus, WQAM used to run Neil Rogers until very recently, 98.5 placed a non-sports show in its brand new lineup etc...

As a tangent, there is a major change occurring in radio, as the way ratings are recorded is transitioning from the diary system to a system using "portable people meters". Don't be surprised to see major ratings shifts and show changes take place as the new ratings system takes stronger hold.

Never said I would get my wish, but that would be my wish. I also wish for intelligent, mostly insightful sports talk on the local level and except for several exceptions, we get none of that either.

And for the record, most of their political talk comes as part of their "headlines" segment at 7:45, unless there's something bigger going on. That's one of their highest-rated and longest-running segments.
