Broncos waive former Patriot TE AJ Derby

That can't be right though. Otherwise teams would get their top players snatched away.

Hmm .... maybe for IR, it only applies to players with fewer than 4 accredited seasons?

Yeah, can't imagine the Seahags having to put Chancellor through waivers to get him to IR.

Waiving a player =/= placing on IR

True. "Waived/injured" means that the player automatically reverts to IR if he goes unclaimed. So, maybe the Donks just don't care if he gets claimed.

Yes I'm aware of this, which is why I asked what is the difference between the two designations. waived/injured and placing a player on IR.

I just want to know what is the benefit. Gotta be something. Cap savings?

I have no clue. @Miguel would probably chime in and correct my *** here, but I think he tweeted that he's "offline" for a couple hours.

Is Gillislee (5th round pick) the Patriots used from Denver in the trade?

Yes he is.

So if we claim Derby and then waive Gillislee, can we (please) get our 5th-rounder back?

Can't vouch for accuracy, but here's one view:

It is important to keep in mind that injury waivers only apply during the offseason, up until the final cutdown date. From that point on, a non-vested veteran can be placed directly on IR, although some teams will still use the “waived-injured” designation, hoping that another team will claim the player, thereby relieving them of the financial responsibility for a player while on IR.

Wait where are all those guys screaming BB screwed up by trading this guy.

Bill used the pick from that trade to get Gillislee. Who was a healthy scratch last week and who has looked underwhelming, especially considering his salary. Neither team got much out of this trade.

I don't necessarily disagree totally with your conclusion, but do 100% disagree with how you got there,

BB is a game plan coach and wanted pass-receiving rbs vs Denver. That Gill was not active for that one game (simultaneous with bb managing other issues and needing the extra DL and not an Extra rB) should not be used as an argument.

Bb went with a slew of rbs to fill the Blount hole. That is often his way to fix a problem position (by going with volume and the 50% that survive cuts/injury issues end up being good). This time he had the lucky problem that his whole rB crew looked good and didn't get IR-level injured, so he found a way to keep them all, but can't necessarily keep them fully employed week-to-week.

Wait for cold snowy game and see if Gill isn't more of a mainstay.

IMO he has already seen enough use to justify the 5th rounder and likely will provide More worth throughout year, remaining 7 games.

Wait! we can sign Derby and Maualuga? Sign the beasts now! then rename this season the inevitable 6.

I guess he was culpable in the Broncos becoming soft as Elway said on Friday. I hardly questioned the toughness of people I barely know, but he comes across to me as soft.

I'm not giving up on Gill.
Maybe he has a injury we are not aware of.

Geez, tough crowd.
There's a logjam at RB and only so many snaps that can be meted out. While Gill hasn't seen a successful YPC it's not as if it's Blutarsky's zero point zero. In his last 5 he was 53 carries for 210 yards. Gill also has been the surest minimum of 3 yards for a handoff (at least up until the Bye).

As much as Lewis and Burk have been more productive from the LOS (clearly so), having a guy who can power through for consistent positive yards has a value.

There was no mystery with Gill in terms of his lack of STs and lack of receiving production. BB signed a bigger sized back that runs North-South yet has a few decent moves for his size. The hope was he'd be a semi-bruising 4.4 type YPC as well as a short yardage specialist. No doubt Gill hasn't lived up to that but it hasn't been a fail by a country mile either.
Bottom line math that is unfavorable to Gill: 6 RBs, 4 TEs, 2 QBs, 5 WRs, 7(8?) OL to go with 3 ST specialists. I'm guessing BB's gameplan won't regularly employ the 'no substitution' Defense :).
