Paris' Notre Dame Cathedral is on fire
Very sad to see. As a Catholic I was looking forward to potentially going to Europe this summer with my family and Notre Dame was high on our list for places to visit.

RIP, science fiction and fantasy Grand Master Gene Wolfe, 1931-2019
Today really sucks.
So sad. Visited ND 20 years ago. Gorgeous. My guess with the scaffolding is a stray spark from welding.
One of the world’s iconic buildings. Tragic.
Holy Week - hate to think it might be terrorism
So sad about Notre Dame. I visited there 5 years ago. So beautiful and so historic. France must be beside itself.
Looks more like renovations gone wrong...
So far they’re blaming it on the construction taking place there. Someone in that company will have to go into witness protection or move to Siberia.
I'll leave other people to mourn the building, but Wolfe's Book of the New Sun is one of the more difficult and rewarding series of genre fiction I've ever read, and I still feel like I only understand maybe two-thirds of it (though that may be the point, given that it's basically an autobiographical gospel written by an admitted liar in a high science-fiction setting). I only read a handful of his other stuff (Wizard-Knight and Home Fires, and not the Long Sun and Short Sun books) and didn't care much for it, but Book of the New Sun is such an important piece of the dying earth genre. Wolfe left behind quite a legacy in genre fiction.
Notre Dame burning down is a tragedy.....Gene Wolfe dying at 88...not so much.....
Very, very sad. One of the great buildings of the world. Was thinking of seeing Europe with my family this summer and as Catholics Notre Dame is a must visit.
Religious feelings aside (I’m an equal opportunity hater but I’m leaving the obvious jokes in my back pocket for now), the architecture on the building was amazing. It is a loss even if it’s just from that point of view.

Agreed. As humans go that's a great run and there will be other great authors. Notre Dame as it was will never come again.
Aren't there churches all over Europe these days?
Yeah, it's an incredible loss of history and very sad and I'm glad I got to see it before this happened, I just didn't have anything much else to add to what other people were saying about it and these sorts of threads just turn into big echo chambers where everyone types the same thing to make sure they made the proper mournful obeisances.
I only said anything about Gene Wolfe because he's a relatively obscure figure and everyone has different takes on Book of the New Sun so there might be an interesting conversation there, but it'll be lost in any case beneath the cavalcade of "RIP the building" posts (or the opposite, edgelord "who cares" posts).
Probably have to go into witness protection deep into Siberia. And rightfully so - that building was, after all, 800 years old.
No, it's beside Belgium. (Sorry, couldn't resist.)
Wrath of god.
