    Yikes. I’ve never been one that’s been for the whole concept of kneeling during the anthem, but the NFL could be really playing with fire here.

    It’s their business and privately held, so they have that right. But I think fines would be a better PR move than an on-field penalty

    I assume the penalty would be assessed on the kickoff?

    I can’t even see the NFL going this far. Civil rights groups are going to go crazy about freedom of speech issues, even though they don’t exist in the workplace.

    Not only would it be a PR nightmare but they would be begging the players to make a mockery of it by taking offsetting kneeling penalties and forcing the officials to announce them at the beginning of every damn game leaving the league with egg on their faces. This league just can't stop shooting itself in the foot on this. If they really want the kneeling stopped all they need to do is leave the players in the locker room for the anthem.

    If racial injustice is protested in some other manner, does it get the same penalty?

    To be fair, they're also considering going back to the pre-2010 or so practice of not having teams on the field at all for the anthem.

    Holy cow...the league really, truly, without a doubt, is run by a bunch of idiots. This would be an awesome display of raw power, when the kickoff goes 20 yards beyond the endzone instead of 5 yards beyond the endzone. Or the ref can just announce that technically there were a bunch of penalties, but they were offsetting because both teams were involved, though they could enact a rule that team with more protesters will be assessed a penalty equivalent to 5-yards of each of their protesters minus the number of the other team's protesters. Then they can spend the next fifteen minutes singling out each player's specific infraction during the national anthem. I'm glad they are brainstorming on their ultimate goal of removing political controversy from a football game...this sounds like a winner.

    If they really want to end kneeling, they will need union approval. In other words, have the next CBA state that kneeling is forbidden and arrange a fine schedule, etc.

    I don't believe most players will care enough to fight to keep it, but management would have to make a concession of some sort.
