and everyone regrets not taking DeAndre Hopkins, Dez Bryant, Davante Adams, Allen Robinson, etc. higher. He is certainly not limited to the slot. He has the size and the technique to play on the outside. As well as every other measurable. Most draft experts see him going in the range of 14.

And all these guys went later in the draft.

Despite having one or two or three inches on JSN.

And despite them being 20, 30, and even 40 pounds heavier.

Ok, Marcus Jones looked good on those 78 receiving yards but you're comparing him to one of the very best WRs in the NFL who had 1700 receiving yards this past season. I don't think the comp works.

I mean you're really in fantasy land if you're trying to convince yourself that the Patriots may have the equivalent of Tyreek Hill and Jameson Williams in Marcus Jones and Tyquan Thornton.

Jury's still out on the Thornton/Williams talent comparison. Thornton is faster and isn't recovering from an ACL injury. Williams had 1rec and 2 drops last year. Williams basically just had that 1 good year in college. Gotta agree with you though that Jameson probably has the waaayyyy higher ceiling.

Maybe that Jakobi Meyers wasn't worth as much as he thought he was?

It's not as if he had to sign with the Raiders before free agency even officially started. He clearly wants to go there.

The ONLY way this loss makes sense is if we end up getting Hopkins or Jeudy - BUT that's going to require a high draft pick too.

The millionaire tax thing is overstated. The actual numbers involved are often embellished and we're talking relatively small margins. When you balance things like QOL, family arrangements, schools, culture, and the sensibilities of the player(s), I don't think it's that big of a deal.

Could it be relevant? Maybe. Some players will want to live in MA despite taxes. Some players will want to live in MA for reasons that have nothing to do with taxes. Some players will not, perhaps related to taxes, perhaps related to weather, perhaps for other reasons. I think it's receiving too much focus.

Bedard very likely does read this forum and that would explain the vapid narratives he crafts (especially recently). At one point I thought the guy had a genuine commitment to due diligence and to good, honest reporting. Unfortunately he seems to be straying from that as of late.

We're essentially bound for a WR corp of 2 #2's, and 2 #3's.
Parker & (Chark/Slayton?); and Bourne & Thornton. Maybe add in a true Slot like Berrios.

I don’t think the plan is basically just this year. I think Kyed, at least the way I see it, is asking what he plan/general direction is for the franchise overall the last few years. These hasnt seemed To be a clear direction. We decided to try and get by in 2020 instead of ripping the bandaid off. Then in 2021 we went crazy in free agency and took advantage of a soft schedule to make the playoffs. I took 2021 has Bill wanting to reload over rebuild by bringing in free agents with a ”win now” approach instead of continuing to build through the draft. Then last year Bill decided to bring any progress to screeching halt with the Patricia experiment resulting in a lost year. Now we let our only consistent offensive player go with a contract we easily could have matched/beat. Overall we just seem to be straddling the rebuild/win now line and getting mediocre results.

I’m honestly not looking back, I think that’s a very long and different conversation. To me this discussion is about Meyers leaving, and how they address their receiving corp this off-season. I get that people aren’t happy about the results of the past few seasons, and I think Belichick has made some serious mistakes, but I also think he’s still one of the best coaches in the league, and giving Groh and Wolf more say over drafting is clearly working out better. This is a really important off-season for the Patriots, if Jones flames out it will be a big setback, I think Belichick knows this, and he will get him the weapons he needs to give him the best shot at succeeding, but that doesn’t ensure that he will, especially in a division and conference loaded with high scoring offenses. This one reason I think there is a remote chance they shock the world and make a move on Jackson, as that would immediately put them in the mix as a real contender. It’s a long shot, but I wouldn’t put it past Belichick. Nor would I write off the idea of them pulling off the trade for Hopkins. I find it hard to believe that Belichick will just accept being at the back of the pack, and go meekly into this season. I think he’s going to make a big move, I just don’t know what it is. We will see what happens.

Well, I digressed, but I guess that’s what I think about that, I’ll be shocked if Belichick goes gently into that good night.

When you consider the Raiders have to travel to California for division games and Missouri (also has a 5% state income tax), you realize Meyers is only getting a break on like 9 games. If you really look at the differences it's something like $200k max, because half your games are taxed because you play in other states.

I was waaaayyy off on his market value. Thought 15 a year for him, aav... And I would have paid it too... But given the figures of his deal, it seems I also over estimated the demand for a player like Meyers... It really looks like this was a one horse race for his services...

Absolutely. And Brown was much more dangerous than Meyers ever was.

I liked Meyers and the effort he put into getting better year over year. I think the team needs more from the critical slot receiver role. Despite the catch numbers, I don't think that he was of the same caliber as Troy, Welker and Jules when it comes to being a game breaker. BB and Co are probably looking for a slot receiver who can gain yards after the catch.

I just don’t think it’s possible. Maybe I’m optimistic but I just don’t see them planning on those three plus any spare change / draft picks they can find. He HAS to have a plan for a WR1. Or some big splash. Tons of cap space and they free up more with Smith.
