Player Signing LB Jack Gibbens signs

Ellis made some nice pass breakups during the season.
You think Christian Ellis was good in coverage? Christian Ellis? Really? Wow
You really have that much trouble understanding the English language? Or are you intentionally twisting words to suit yourself?

Having some nice pass breakups is exactly that. Says nothing about overall pass coverage performance.

Even a blind pig finds acorns sometimes, doesn’t mean it sees them well.

Hey... wait a minute..

I'd match the offer for Christian Ellis. He made 5 starts (11th most defensive snaps) but had the 3rd most tackles, 6th most solo tackles, tied 5th most passes defensed, forced and recovered a fumble, made an interception, had 2 sacks and 4th most QB hits.

He also played the 4th most snaps on one of the best special teams units in the league.

Vrabel's defense calls for smallish faster more agile LB'ers... and no offense to Gibbens and Spillane (who I think are instinctive players) but Ellis is a better athlete than either of them. He is fast and can fly.
Spillane is a heat seeking missile and shoots gaps well.. Ellis is a reactionary player with good instincts.. and is a good rotational player in the defense. Spillane is just what the LB corps needed physicality and attitude. I agree we should match the offer for Elliss.

If Bentley comes back and they extend him maybe (contract year), they could have a pretty good LB unit.

Nice signing. I don't put too much stock in PFF but for for what it's worth he was their 13th best coverage LB in the NFL last season. Hopefully Gibbens makes Tavai expendable.
I want Tavai here. He needs to know his place, which is on the bench for the whole season. That is something I am rooting for.

Ellis may have more growing to do, but because of the ****-Show we had last year, he was someone always in the play later in the year.
Hard to believe he's less than camp fodder, but maybe the coaches don't like his style of play for some reason, missing assignments? I dunno.

You would think if they were going to march they would have announced it.

Maybe he's getting 5, and Pats only think he's worth 3.
I have no idea, he was one of the guys that was DEFINITELY putting in the EFFORT last year, I made reference to it in the GDT at least once.

Is he a Superstar? NO OF COURSE NOT, but you cannot afford Superstars everywhere.

Waste of a roster spot. I'd rather he be a extra in John Wick 5.

As built right now, I think that...

Spillane is the obvious #1 ILB, every down guy and playcaller.

Bentley is the #2 "starter" but will come off the field for Ellis when they want more coverage at the LB spot, or even if they want to use an extra box safety instead of a second ILB. Elliss will also be a corer STer.

Gibbens is coming off serious injury and is mostly a run down only guy. He'll play STs and serve as depth behind Bentley/Spillane as they need it, but it'll be largely a red shirt year spent as a reserve. If recovery looks good and he does well in any snaps he gets then the vibes maybe parlay into a re-signing this offseason.

Jennings is often listed as a LB, but will be an edge guy separate from this rotation. Tavai will factor in there as well, IMO, but I'd say he's in a fight for a roster spot since he's kind of no man's land in a new scheme that favors more athletic LBs.

Jesus I just watched the play in which Gibbens was injured......gross.

I'm somewhat surprised they matched the $4.8m offer on Elliss.

Keep in mind that they already tendered Elliss at $3.3M. So the reported $4.8M cap number this year only represents a small $1.5M increase in cap charge. And with still upwards of $70M in cap space once all reported signings are finalized, that hardly breaks the bank.

Will be interesting to see the full terms of the 2 year deal though. I wonder if it's the type of deal that means he'll truly be here for 2 years or if it's one that's set up to effectively be a 1 year deal with a team option.

That's what it does. If nothing else, he's an upgrade over Christian Elliss in the depth rotation.

With Spillane and Gibbens, Vrabel has injected some athleticism to the Patriots LB's.
Should see a lot less Tavai and Ellis...

Other shoe:

If the New England Patriots want to retain a linebacker that fits Mike Vrabel’s mold, they’re going to have match an offer sheet.

The Las Vegas Raiders signed Christian Elliss to an offer sheet on Wednesday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported. The Patriots now have until Monday to match it.

Not so fast my friends...

I’m still not sure Bentley wont get traded. He’s entering the last year of his deal and is kind of square peg despite losing weight. Be nice to have him, not sure we will.
