This is only an option if he can't play of course. But I desperately want to keep his vast experience on how to play short routes to stay in the franchise. This is a franchise who lives and dies on the checkdown at times, we need to have this be an excellent part of our offensive game. And I honestly believe that keeping Edelman's brain on staff will help us get there. I'm convinced he's been working with Meyers, who is probably going to take over his role if not his extreme proficiency within that role, and I want to see that work continue. Dude has encyclopedic levels of knowledge about how to beat defenders on short routes and with a guy at QB without the best arm strength (and/or a possible rookie without a ton of experience who'll need to be carried somewhat by the WRs) having that knowledge in the institution is invaluable.
I didn't want Gronk as a coach because Gronk did what he did based a lot on physical gifts. The only gift Edelman had was his quickness but the dude played smart, knew how to shake a defender and get open with some consistency. Those are things other WRs can learn to up their game. And I desperately want his hard nosed blue collar attitude to rub off on the youngsters. I think it's worth keeping him around to work with the young WRs.
