Gronk to have back surgery

Anything with Gronk's back, given his history, should be at least some concern.

and yet the Pats think Ballard was good enough to sign and contend for a starting role... Seems like I'm on the same page as the Patriots...

Btw, nearly half the TE's you listed are JAG's and Ballard can easily match their production in this sytem.

Look, if you and BradyFTW want to think Ballard is a top 10 TE in the NFL, you go right ahead. I strongly disagree. That's my position. I think Ballard is a very good blocker with good hands. He is not a top 10 NFL TE. That's my position.

I think gronk is a good candidate for the designated ir we wasted on visathe shiancoe last year.

No way. He would have to have a major setback. I would be shocked if he even went of the reserve pup.

As stated by the intelligent poster above gronk will probably be ready for the 1st game of the season.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm more concerned about Herr Vollmer's chronic back issues than about Gronk's minor disc surgery.

I agree, but I do think that Gronk's is cause for concern but not alarm. According to Stephania Bell he is looking at 12 weeks before full contact and he is ultimately going to miss an entire offseason of hard core working out to get ready for the season. At a minimum he should be on the PUP to give hiom as much time as needed to prepare for the season, and he may even require the IR slot. I would much rather have him come back at as close to 100% as possible than rush him in any way because when all is said and done it will be the play-off run that matters, and if they can't get to the play-offs without him then they really weren't going anywhere anyways. (although I think that is completely unlikely, i think they will be in easily even if he sits out until december.

If a guy is going to miss training camp anyway, then there's absolutely no reason to IR him (in-season or otherwise) rather than PUP him. If that's the route that there's interested in pursuing, then the only sensible path forward is to PUP him and then re-evaluate after 6 weeks and either activate or IR him.

Note:

This back surgery was NOT determined until the tests they took on the
20th of May when they did the surgery on the forearm became available.
They said at that time it would take awhile to get the results back.

Gronkowski Set For Surgery On Forearm; No Plans To Operate On Back « CBS Boston

Because He is doing so well and the results are now back they have
scheduled a minor back surgery. This was a wait and see delay. If
results were different there would have been no back surgery.

There really is no such thing as minor back surgery. If the reports are true, Gronk has been experiencing back pain since last season. My guess is that the medical staff attempted to treat this problem conservatively since the end of the season, with PT and other modes, possibly including injections. Apparently, several months of conservative treatment has not addressed the issue. Surgery should never be the first option, especially for someone with a previous history of back issues. I think Vollmer is probably doing the right thing by avoiding or delaying back surgery for as long as possible. Sounds like Gronk is not in that position, unfortunately for him.

Some Comments on the comments:

1. People are NOT using their inference skills on this topic and thus are blowing it way out of proportion.

2. There is a reason that the Pats are delaying this surgery and its NOT because of any supposed "infection" he has. Its been determined already that there IS NO infection at this point. Thus I would infer the delay as meaning the "back surgery" is very minor and prophylactic. One of those things that you are back at full strength in a few weeks.

The reason for the wait, according to a league source, is a precautionary measure to ensure the infection that resulted in Gronkowski undergoing his fourth forearm surgery May 21, is a little further in the rear view mirror.
