I dunno. Maybe they were thinking some nut was going to think "that guy's stealing Robert E. Lee's good name" or something?

Yeah, that's about the best I can do.

[As a completely random aside: I have met a Robert E. Lee IV, although I don't think he's a direct descendant.]

Ohhhhhh, I thought ESPN might have been concerned about the audience mistaking the announcer for the real General's ghost or zombie. I mean, ESPN is that in touch with it's audience....

Agreed. Hopefully Liberals and Conservatives can come together against the one thing that unites us all: A strong belief that ESPN sucks.

Yea that was a total cop-out.

So by ESPN's pea-minded logic, the concern is the alt-left/antifa wackos would beat the crap out of an American-Asian man who has the same last name of a Confederate General who was actually against slavery.

    BS

    what a load of crap.

if that were the case, they would've pulled out of covering the game altogether, not just swap announce teams

Let's see, ESPN ratings are in the toilet. ESPN then does something controversial and gets headlines. Sure, it's not about trying to garner attention to stay relevant..

Welcome to the world we live in where the fear of SJW "outrage" is enough to drive billion dollar corporations to insanity.

I dunno. You want people to laugh with you, not at you. This was actually the thought process inside the head of someone with a position of responsibility at ESPN. HOW???

Slightly off topic, but I've been thinking about this quite a bit since Charlottesville. Although I don't want to commemorate evil actions, I do think we should move the statues and monuments to museums in order to solemnly remember the sins of our country's past. I've had the somber privilege of visiting both the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, and the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa. Experiencing the sad history of the exhibits left a mark on me. I truly believe that it's important that we don't gloss over the grave mistakes of our forefathers; we don't want to celebrate the people and events, but we should remember their actions and ensure that we construct a better society in the future. Facing our ugly past and overcoming it together is better than simply sweeping history under the rug (not that I'm accusing you of doing that; just commenting).

I don't really care what happens to them. Gun to my head, I'd probably say move them to museums (which I'm sure would be happy to have them just for the publicity). For better or worse, they're markers to this country's history and the figures, as well as what they represent, should be learned about and from. That said, I can't really claim that I'd lose sleep if they were either left up or knocked to the ground with a wrecking ball, either. Just my opinion.

I am in absolute agreement. It's never a good idea to erase history. As the saying goes, those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.

However, I'd propose that instead of celebrating or glorifying individuals from the Civil War, monuments be of the type that serves as reminders of the terrible losses suffered by this country, some 750,000 to a million. And leave them outside. Putting them in museums is effectively sweeping this war under the rug.
