Deshaun Watson Suspended 11 games (Updated)

In early 2021, Watson announced he would never play for the Texans again. He was obviously fed up with the general cluster-f of that organization (plus he probably wanted more money). It was a couple months after that proclamation that these allegations surfaced. Supposedly last summer they got close to making a deal with Miami, but that's just rumor.

So what would have happened if the allegations never surfaced? Would the Texans have traded him or called his bluff? They probably would have traded him but who knows.... but what happened was he voluntarily stayed away and they paid him his contract.

That's what I thought, but I couldn't remember the timing of events. Thank you.

Goodell, as the frontman for the league, is going to be entirely driven over the PR fallout of this and 6 games is going to be (rightly) seen as too low. He’s gonna unilaterally appeal to himself and increase it. I would be shocked if he doesn’t.
To me it's all been an interesting series of events.

NFLPA says in advance we won't appeal because they want to establish the precedent that the Judge sets the penalties, not Goodell.

Of course that is not what the CBA says, it says Goodell can overrule the penalties, so they're trying to get something beyond what they bargained for in the CBA.

The Judge's ruling is absolutely at the low end of the scale anyone anticipated, so it is kind of forcing Goodell to override the ruling, which would also set the precedent that the Commissioner can and will overrule the Judge.

It's almost as if the Judge is daring Goodell to overrule her.

And from a NFL point of view he should, just to (re-)establish the precedent that the Commissioner can overrule weak penalties.

So Calvin Ridley gets a full year for betting $4000 on NFL games, while Watson gets 6 games for assaulting nearly 2 dozen women? Only in Goodell's kangaroo court...
Allegedly!

Unlike Krafty Bob, there is no video evidence. Of course with Bob there was consent, here there was not as far as we can tell.

We're in the realm of he said, she said, even though there are so many "shes" it's hard not to accept that he at least pestered women inappropriately for sex, at the worst he's a true sexual predator.

If there was video evidence, Watson would be in jail and all this would be moot.

Watson sat all of last season. Shouldn't that count for something?

What was done to Tom Brady was criminal. Watson's suspension shouldn't be compared to that.

Ridley gambled on NFL games. What Watson did was outside the workplace. No comparison. Ridley was worse.

I'm not defending his actions, but come on. Watson didn't physically beat anyone. It wasn't criminal. Missing almost 1.5 years of his career is a steep penalty, not light.
No!

He sat by mutual consent between him, his agents, and the team.

He was paid in full, and suffered no wear and tear on his body, no injuries.

Would you consider it a penalty to not only be at home getting full pay for a year, but then getting a raise that paid you more money than anyone else doing your kind of work?

The idea that he's already been penalized is a non-starter, IMO.

So now even the judge says he has violated the NFL's personal conduct policy, and by paying off 23 of the 24 women he's showing he wasn't able to clear his name.

Bottom line, no matter what, this is going to stick to the man for the rest of his life.

The $240M he's getting from the Brownies ain't gonna clear his name.

Mutual consent.

Do you think Watson had any choice? Do you think he preferred to give up a healthy year in his prime of a limited window career?

If the NFL said "it's ok to go" why wouldn't a team like Cleveland have made this offer last year?

Mutual consent.

Do you think Watson had any choice?
Yes. He chose to no longer play for Houston, and that choice was announced before any of this took place.

I said it all year long: He was stupid to do what he did. He should have reported to the Texans and forced the NFL's hand last year so he would be done with the suspension by now.

Because there was tremendous uncertainty regarding his status. Supposedly Miami came close, but no one offered Houston what they wanted for him.

he didn't beat them, he only sexually molested 20+ women... but thats okay though, right? cuz its just women
Didn't he sit because the Texans wouldn't pay him? I thought it was a hold out, and then when it was clear the Texans weren't going anywhere last year, they couldn't trade him because of the legal ambiguity. He wasn't suspended last year, if I recall correctly.

He sat out last season because he didn't want to play for the Texans anymore... got upset at them when they hired Nick Caserio... got bent out of shape when they didn't interview any of his hand picked favorites...

He also received his full 10 million dollar salary last year...

So Last year he was out if the game on his own volition - No one elses... He could have played, he chose not to... In no way should that be construed as "part of the punishment"

Because there was tremendous uncertainty regarding his status. Supposedly Miami came close, but no one offered Houston what they wanted for him.

Exactly.

There was only uncertainty concerning his status because the NFL would stop him from playing.

Maybe Watson made the wrong decision not to force the playing issue, but there was no way he would have played last year.

He was essentially suspended.

Really?

White owners walk, but black athletes pay the price for sexual improprieties. The NFL law should be equal for all. Kraft should have received some form of punishment and Jones as well for having his pants down by his ankles all over the web. Both clearly violated the NFLs code of conduct.

Racism accusations today in this environment? Good luck.
If Kraft wasn't white you wouldn't be whining so much

Lol it be a travesty if he only gets 2 more games than what Tom got for deflated footballs
Yep, 2 more games than Tom got for doing absolutely nothing.

he didn't beat them, he only sexually molested 20+ women... but thats okay though, right? cuz its just women

Did Kraft do the same?

I disagree when people fall back on the "they only do this to the black players." Your remark is equally unfair.

We're not discussing whether what Watson did was OK or whether he should have no penalty like the white owner.

The owners own the league. They are never ever going to be punished like the players/coaches.

Just a few things:
  • The league did not give this suspension, it was an arbitrator. Word was the league wanted at least a year.
  • As others pointed out, the league can appeal this ruling and the appeals "judge" is Roger Goodell who could pretty much give Watson whatever he wants to give him (although there would be a lawsuit on behalf of Watson signed almost immediately).
  • My guess the league will stick their finger in the wind and see what the reaction is to determine if they want to appeal. If there isn't much dust up, they will not appeal and let this disappear. If there is a lot of outrage, they probably appeal.
  • If the league does appeal, I am guessing that Goodell issues an indefinite suspension that could be anywhere up to a lifetime ban and then try to negotiate with Watson and the NFLPA for an one year suspension and ultimately settle from anywhere from 8 games to a year suspension.

"Essentially suspended" =/= "Suspended".

He got 8 figures worth of income last year. That's not what happens when you're suspended.

Tom Brady is trending on Twitter because of this 6 games news.
