In the next town over there's a single mom of a young child with totally disabling CP we came to know through a Make-A-Wish project and started helping out in whatever way we could. Her heat quit and the only place within 20 miles that had the correct burner nozzle in stock was The Depot. I ordered it online for pickup from their automated locker. It took 2 hours to get the confirmation it was ready but I thought under the circumstances that was pretty good until it turned out to be the wrong one and I had to go in. I just couldn't believe the number of people in there browsing and buying non urgent stuff. Parents with kids checking out yard furniture, a line at the paint counter, garden shop booming...WTF

We've got 1 son - Mrs. P's son, my step - who works in steel & manufacturing in the midwest. He got hit hard by the 08 recession, lost his job in 09, we took him for about a year, meanwhile, my mom started needed a ton of our attention. Now someone at his shop tested positive, badda bing badda boom, we're helping him again, and I don't begrudge it. He's actually a relatively - relatively - smart, hard-working guy. Actually very smart, has some rough edges, but my reason for replying is sort of like... lets see, if you're 15 in 2008, and you're 27 now, how the hell does capitalism still look like it's working? Or shift those ages up some and back some. You have to be pretty old at this point to remember the 1960s, when we were booming, the commies were still trying to play catch up, we were good, they were evil, and that was that.

So yeah, a secular bear? Who knows. I also wonder whether people will be like "Okay so we turn socialist every 10 years anyway, what's so wrong with AOC?"

Ha, I could have a lot of fun with this one, but not the place for it.

So thank you, but I'll have to respectfully decline.

To be clear, he's much older than the range of ages named here.

Yeah, I've seen that with some occupations too - the job is capable of "work from home" so they're OK for a while but then the groups or organizations that they make revenue from servicing shutter so then they have no work to do and get laid off anyway. Fortunately I'm in the field of providing technical support to pharmaceutical companies, so those companies both A) still have lots of work going on and B) have their own workforce working remotely which just creates more technical problems for them that they then need my team to help them with, so business is as busy as it ever was.

My GF just received an email from her company's CEO. Every full-time employee below director level is getting a $1,000 COVID-19 hardship bonus. The email also said no layoffs are planned, but of course that is subject to change.

I'm pleased to see this. Things there had definitely slowed down as expected in these times. I figured any CEO email would be about furloughs or layoffs. I figured wrong and gladly so.

    Regards,
    Chris

Agreed, and that's part of the problem I see with these crashes, especially when only certain people come out ahead from them. It causes people to question the system. I still think capitalism is the best system in the world, and I firmly believe everyone in the western world benefits. But I can see how some people might see it differently when every 10 years or so their world is turned upside down and they get knocked back to square one while the bankers come out richer than ever 2 years later.

Italy says they have achieved an R0 value of 1 (down from 3). As it drops below 1, the epidemic will end. The number of people in the ICU in Italy DECLINED today for the first time.

Pandemic effects I wouldn't have thought of! Both MegaMillions and Powerball are eliminating the minimum guaranteed jackpot and the minimum rollover drawing and basing the jackpot solely on ticket sales and interest rates.

It would seem this could be easily explained.

    In a political forum.
