going with a 6 man rotation second half.. great move for this team, do not burn out the starting rotation.. do not know who is getting sent down...

Have to love the way Francona is handling his pitchers...

I think this is the move everyone has been waiting for. He'll have rested the arm for the Sept. run, now its a matter of maturity and intelligence. Experts say he has all the pitches.
So, if he pitches lights out in each start, do the Sox trade one from the rotation?

Unfortunately I wouldn't get too excited - everything I've read says its just a spot start and he's going right back to AAA when its over.

Or showcase for a trade??? Where did I read that two Toronto scouts were at his last start??? I think the asking price for Halliday (?sp) will be too steep, especially within the division but if it is the start of a six man rotation, it rests the entire staff..Who knows, it could be the start of something. Thirty years ago teams went with a 4 man rotation and you pitched on three days rest....

it is not a showcase or anything else like that. He is coming up for a spot start because both Beckett and Wake are pitching in the All Star game. I would not read anything into this move.

They aren't going to a 6 man rotation.

He is making a spot start to let the Sox align their rotation for the second half. Before the season began they talked about getting their starters some rest during this season and this is what is taking place.

I've never quite understood this notion of trading Bucholz and top prospects for Halladay.

There's no real spot for Bucholz right now and everyone thinks he's the greatest thing since sliced bread - so obviously someone's going to be cut or sent down to make room for Halladay if he's traded here.

Then, since we know the Sox wouldn't give up so much young talent to rent Halladay for 1.5 seasons, you have the issue of expecting that the Sox probably aren't going to sign Halladay to an extension AND Becket to an extension once his contract is up. They will spend the money for 1 ace pitcher - not two.

So then the question is, do you want Halladay alone, or Becket, plus all the guys you'd otherwise trade away to get Halladay.

I like Beckett, Bucholz, Bard and whoever elese they'd trade away - over just Halladay any day.

Yeah, it rests the starters, and puts a whole lot more stress on an already overused bullpen. If you go from 5 to 6 starters, you need to go from 7 to 6 bullpen guys.

Halladay doesn't really give us anything. You're trading the farm for essentially a difference of 1 ERA in 10 starts. (vs our #5) That may win them 1 more game. They need a bat if they're gonna throw around prospects.

It's funny to hear people say they need a bat; well, where is this bat going to play? Catcher, nope, first, nope, second, nope, third, nope (unless Lowell can't come back), short, nope (you've got three players there already for one position), left, center, right, nope, nope, nope. DH, nope (at least not off the last month for David).

So I ask you, where?

Stay with what you've got and if Dice K comes back, you are loaded with starters too........................

All it takes is one more game in all of the 3 rounds a team must get through to win a World Series, its not always about the regular season. Becket ain't Pedro, he'd see another Lion in the rotation as a challenge and maybe even a learning opportunity. IMO its about Mrs Halliday and the kids, assuming Roy has a family. Get them sold on coming here and it'll happen. He has to hate having his Octobers free and that isn't going to change any time soon in Toronto.

BTW, I'd make a Bucholtz for 1.5 years of Halliday trade in roughly one second.

1 more win in each of the 3 series is more than you're going to get. You're most likely looking at a RUN per series. ONE RUN.

Mike Lowell is a TERRIBLE defender right now. Replacing him with an average defender with no bat would provide more than replacing Penny with Halladay.

Lowell has a .318 OBP, and is, according to advanced metrics (UZR, RF,etc), the worst defensive third baseman in the league. No reason not to replace him.

, short, nope (you've got three players there already for one position)

Yeah, 3 players.
1. terrible defense, and no offense. Most likely DFA'd. (lugo)
2. mediocre defender and poor hitter (.career 650 OPS) (green)
3. Kid with potential who hasn't been able to stay healthy and is coming off an injury that tends to have longterm implications (lowrie)

I like Lowrie, but none of these guys are a reason NOT to make a move.

, left, center, right, nope, nope, nope. DH, nope (at least not off the last month for David).
Left is fine, but short term. Bay will most likely be gone next year. As to right, Drew has pretty much become a Platoon guy at this point. In center, I like Ellsbury, and think he could develope into something great, but again, hes a .750 OPS guy, and could be upgraded.
So I ask you, where?

The only guys who couldn't use an upgrade are Youk and Pedroia (both young and great). Ortiz, Bay, Drew, Vtek, are all short term, and while most aren't upgradeable, although Tek certainly is, replacements need to be found at some point..

Come on Drew and Lowell have been big for us in the past and present.

R U F'n kidding me?
I don't remember Lowrie being injured often. Wasn't last year his rookie year?
Ellsbury could be upgraded? Today's Herald article, there are only 4-5 players in the league with his kind of speed. But hey, let's get a slower guy who can hit better.
Green is a good utility infielder. But lets' replace him for a guy who should be playing everyday, because that will keep the clubhouse happy.

i think we should stick with what we got.. there are no major holes in our lineup and pitching wins championships.. we have a ton of pitching.. we will probably go get a bullpen guy with the way our pen has been pitching recently but i dont think any major moves are to come... i dont know where you would put someone if we were to get a big bat.. for whoever said drew is a platoon guy now ur crazy... for whoever said ellsbury can be be upgraded, i would take ellsburys D, .280 avg, and 60 stolen bases every year in center field over a 300 avg and 10-15 more hrs per year with no D or stolen bases... i think SS, 1b, 3b is the only positions where we could make someone fit although at this point nick green seems to be getting more comfortable and i dont think theres a big SS on the market right now so it leaves with 1b/3b.. ive heard we could be goin after nick johnson which would move youk to 3b.. i just dont see a big trade coming unless we go get Halladay and for people saying that he wont help us that much well he will cuz if someone in the AL goes and gets him guess who we gota face in the playoffs and that would hurt us.. i say if we can trade buchholz and a couple prospects for halladay we do it and raise another banner... no one will hit our rotation in the playoffs having halladay, beckett, lester, and anyone else as our 4th... i say if we go get halladay even though everyone says we need a bat not a pitcher halladay is still the one that gives us the best chance to win a WS this year cuz we wouldnt have to face him!
