Anyone here own any Bitcoin? I have given up trying to understand it, but I bought some a couple weeks ago. Interesting (and strange).

I've bought and used some for online purchases but never keep any in my wallet. Alot of places have like 20% discounts for using bitcoin.

I'm using it as an investment, though it's a lot like gambling. Where have you seen 20-percent discounts?

Thanks for responding to this thread, by the way. I started it over five weeks ago.

Bitcoins are some imaginary video game tokens cooked up in some nerd's basement. Since all other forms of currency have been so debased and manipulated, Bitcoins have a perceived value. Right now, they seem too volatile to have a practical application as a store of value or medium of exchange.

But it's gaining some legit traction being recognized by many world financial institutions and is a haven of exchange in countries experiencing serious currency problems. I like the globally based aspect of it. But its volatility is not for fools or the weak of heart. I'm just hoping that it stabilizes and grows as time goes on. I have a friend who put in 10 percent of his net work back when it was valued at $4k and he since has more than doubled his money.

My tech savvy friends who bought in early on this are doing well (although, you haven't "made" anything until you actually cash out).
I'd like nothing better than to see some alternative to this crappy/crooked central banking system in place now but I remain skeptical that those SOB's won't find some way to mess with crypto's.

Been on board since 2014 and wish I had gone in more, cashed out many times what I put in last year and still hold the majority of the coins. It's one of those things where the potential return is so high that it makes sense to invest an amount you can afford to lose IMO. Obviously the downside potential is big too, it could conceivably become totally worthless.

Bamping to say that this is a good time to spend some buckaroos on some altcoins, imo.

    Do your own research.
Only gamble with money you can afford to lose. Notice I used the word gamble, that's on purpose. The coins I bought when I first bought in half of them are dead and half of them are worth several times what I paid for them.

    Coins I'd recommend looking into:

Nano - I like their roadmap and dev team.
VeChain - you get some coins paid out to you
    IOTA - Look at their partnerships/affiliations -
ICX - Like Nano I like their roadmap and dev team.

I'm looking into GVT and TE-Food. I prioritize projects which have a plan and roadmap to actually get used and I'm avoiding coins who are looking to just be a store of value because I think that ship has sailed between the coins that already do that.

Why do I think it's a good time to buy?

-BTC has held the $6k floor for a LONG time. A year and a half ago $6k as a ceiling would have been mind-blowing.
-China has deemed ETH property so it's not subject to the same ban as the rest of crypto
    -Bakkt
-Coinbase working with Blackrock on an ETF

This reddit post sums it up:

But do your own research. The $500 I spent in 4 years ago allowed me to erase my post-divorce debt. If I had loaded up to the tune of $5k or so I would no longer have to work. Still, I'm grateful to be debt free.

    I'm 80% crypto skeptic and 20% optimist.

I gave a 16 YO kid I met $15K to invest in some Ethereum* for me last summer.

A few months later it was worth $115K USD.

A few months later it was back down to $15K, where it's sat for a while.

Held the whole time. I'll probably end up watching it go to zero.

If what happened today is the correction that we’ve been anticipating, that’ll probably happen sooner rather than later.
