I believe that he held on to aging stars past their point of having any real trade value. If the objective was a total roster over-haul, then why wait until your best assets are in decline? Having last year's team together was a waste; they had no chance at a championship.
Maybe MJ says those things to divert attention away from the fact that he's been an abject failure as a basketball executive. The older he gets, the better he used to be....
At what point does Ainge start feeling real heat for the roster he put together? He had plenty of time to formulate an exit strategy from the Big Three era and given what the C's are working with now, he failed miserably.
I'm a little late to this thread, but a great article, nonetheless. Brad Stevens is an outstanding young coach and I hope that DA finds the money to build a team like he did for Doc's run to a title.
