PFT: Shawne Merriman's career in jeopardy?

The guy I share an office with is a HUGE Chargers fan and in the beginning, he vehemently denied that this whole Merriman thing was vaild. But today he said his forums indicate that it could be a ploy to cover up ANOTHER drug-test failure on the part of Merriman. Hmmmm... And me, I thought once he was off the juice, he sucked. He could still be on them!

Torn ligament

ESPN reports tonight. Not clear which one. Options include tying to play through it, minor surgery, or season-ending surgery. Will not be re-signed by SD in 09. He wants to play, but no decision has been made.

I could see him in a pats uni ;)

But bein serious if he were smart he has to consider hes a FA next year and could miss out on millions and millions of dollars if his knee isnt %100 no team is going to pay him top dollar with a bum knee. He should have season ending surgery heal up his knee and get that big contract you know he wants, plus I dont wana play against him week 6 either lol.

Can't stand the guy but I hope he makes it because players like Merriman are what the league is all about.

Re: Shawne Merriman's Career In Jeopardy

I hope Merriman can get this taken care of. He's one of the best LB's in the game and he's so young. This would be a major blow to one the best defenses in the NFL.

Good for you....you are a better man than I......I hope that this loudmouth gets whatever is coming to him...the guy is a jacka## and a bleeding a-hole ...to be remotely kind....sounds like the birds are coming "home to roost".........so to speak....

Was Merriman actually caught taking steriods?

All I have ever heard is a "banned substance". That could mean HGH or a number of things.

Also, isn't the PCL the least "threatening" of the ligaments?

If anyone has clarification, it would be appreciated.

PCL tear means very little in regards to athletics......You can easily survive without your PCL....Now, the ACL? that is a different story......If he is talking all this sh## about having a torn PCL slowing him down....there is MORE to this story.....

What do you mean 'players like Merriman are what the league is all about?'

You mean the league is swamped with talented players that use illegal drugs and steroids?

Hell,Maybe you ARE right

He must be going to Dr. Uribe

heres the latest dont sound good at all for him of course.

Shawne Merriman revealed Saturday that his career could be over. In addition to a torn PCL, Merriman has a torn LCL in his left knee.

His knee requires extensive reconstructive surgery. Perhaps Merriman will chance it and play this year, but that would be foolish. His contract is up after the 2009 season and if he has the procedure, Merriman could try continuing his career afterwards. He'd risk more damage by playing on the knee in 2008. He needs to be removed from IDP draft boards.

You know, we all love to jump on Florio when he gets it wrong, but let's give PFT some credit here. They posted a seemingly wild rumor about "whispers" that Merriman had a career-threatening knee injury...then two days later, Merriman revealed that he had a career-threatening knee injury. That's a heck of a scoop, and they pull it off remarkably often. And they're exceptionally good at contract-related stuff.

If only somebody could get Florio to understand that he's not any kind of expert on the game of football, and that he should never under any circumstances write predictions or "analysis."

then again, a lot of "analysts" fall into that category

While I don't wish injuries on any player, once one happens, I certainly don't get all teary eyed over it. Unfortunately for the chargers, I doubt many people outside of San Diego will be dissapointed by this news. Just like many of us aren't sorry to hear that Peyton Manning had his sack removed...bursa sack that is. :D

I've always gotten the sense that when merriman hits someone, he hopes to hurt them in as violent a way as possible. It appears karma's come back to bite him in the as... err, knee.

I completely agree.

Good-Bye and Good Riddance, you pimple-infested cheater; and don't forget to take your steroid-fueled, arrogant sack dance with you, too.

One down, so many more to go...

This is what Merriman gets for playing with the light switch.

Something was bound to blow out eventually.

You don't risk playing professional football with both your PCL and LCL torn, which is why I doubt we'll see Merriman in a Chargers uniform until at least sometime in 2009, and then he might not have the same explosion.

In recent interviews Shawne made it sound like he's had these tears for a little while now.

Honestly, he should have opted for reconstructive surgery as soon as he was made aware of the full extent of this injury. The longer he waits the more damage he's causing to the structural integrity of the surrounding knee.

Also, Merriman's already had his knee scoped recently, so this would be adding another surgery to that knee in a relatively short time period, which isn't ideal.

Yeah he needs to have this surgery to at least try and preserve his career rather than trying to come back and play while risking permanent damage. Guy is only 24 years old.

Chargers board already has multiple posters wanting Seau to return.

So this injury has just been around for a while, he's played on it, and it's coming out just now that he could/should miss some time because of it? Makes me think the Charger's medical staff really dropped the ball here or was told to look the other way.

I might be wrong but I believe he got this injury against the Titans last season.

I hope he recovers. I want to see more of M.Jones-Drew blowing him up and Heath Evans knocking him well out of Maroney's way for an entire half in a playoff game.

Regards,
Chris

Sounds like there is a good chance he is done for the year. One of the top afc teams just got a bit weaker, which is good for the patriots. Merriman is a fierce competitor, and looks to be the emotional leader of the team(LdT probably could be but he's always on the bench when his team needs him the most  ). It also hurts the Chargers pass rush quite a bit.
