From KFFL:
Giants | Agent says contract terrible for Arrington
Mon, 24 Apr 2006 17:59:58 -0700

Paul Schwartz, of the New York Post, reports an agent with knowledge of New York Giants LB LaVar Arrington's contract said the contract from Arrington's point of view is terrible. His $5.25 signing bonus is virtually inconsequential when pro-rated over seven-years and the roster bonuses over the first two years are based on playing time.

Once again the Postons have done him in. Remember he PAID the Redskins 4 million dollars to release him. How and why these guys still have clients is beyond me.

"Stupid is as stupid does" to quote a certain philosopher.

Any agent who does not know that the new CBA limits the proration of signing bonuses given out this year to 5 years is not one I would take advice from.

That's just it, Miguel. Arrington continues to take their advice even after they cost him money when he was with the Redskins. You would think that the guy would have learned by now. After that debacle I would have fired them. I guess when it comes to business, Arrington just isn't that smart.

I was not referring to the Postons. I was referring to the agent quoted in the KFFL piece.

I agree with you. But I still think that the Postons do more harm than good SOMETIMES.

Seems to me if you keep getting screwed by the same people you must enjoy it

He (Arringotn) is not the first guy to over-estimate his worth in the market. I don't think he got screwed in hte sense that he should have gotten more from the Giants. He was probably lucky to get as much as he did.

The screwing was self-inflicted if his new contract (minus the fokur mil) will pay him less than his old contract would have.

It seems pretty simple to me. EIther he will make MORE money by buying out his old contract, or he will make less.

You have to wonder how Ty Law is feeling right now, after teams passed on him when the big money was being handed and now they don't even seem to know how to do contracts.

I'm not a Poston fan, dislike them a lot in fact, but I'm not sure what they did wrong with Arrington's contract.

Could someone explain to me just what the beef is?

The beef is we're all haters up here in NE, didn't you already know.:D

Last night I saw Arrington interviewed and my heart sunk a little. Why? Because Lavar was extremely bright and well spoken. He didn't seem at all the self-possessed monster he has been made out to be. He reminded me of a cross between Seymour and Bruschi and thus I was disappointed he couldn't play for the Pats. Who knows, maybe he was just taking his meds for change, but he was one of the smartest, glib and balanced NFL players I have ever heard speak.

Amazing sports fact - he made it through the interview without saying "ya know" a single time. The entire world of athletic speech nearly imploded and collasped into a black hole of linguistics.

I'm not cryin for the guy. He has not been an impact player for quite some time and this contract reflects that. If he want star money, he needs to have star production. If he can make it as the Will he will be able to rack up nearl 50mil. That is not bad in any book.

Funny how different perceptions are. I saw the interview too, and having seen him interviewed a couple of years ago two things struck me, he seemed a little "spacey", not as well spoken as I've heard him before, and also his face and neck seemed pumped up, abnormally so. In any case I hope he's happier in NY than he was in Wash.

That's because he was too busy saying "I mean" and "Man" over and over, but I still don't understand how the Postons screwed him.

Me, neither. I heard that the Packers offered Arrington more money than did the Giants but he turned them down to play for the Giants. I guess the opportunity to play for a winning team and the chance to play against his former team two times a year was worth giving up some money to Arrington.

IIRC I think part of it is paying $4.4 million (actually waiving an owed bonus to get out of his contract with the Redskins) in the hopes of getting a much larger payday in the FA market. When that didn't materialize ($5.25 million bonus vs $4.4 ) it appears that they may have overvalued or overpriced him...

Not sure there is a real beef, just the usual reaction to the Poston driven early spin. The 7 year $49M deal is for all intents and purposes a year to year deal depending on whether or not he and the Giants still like each other as it unfolds. No serious signing bonus money so they can cut bait after this season and survive the dead cap hit. Or they could hang on to him for 7 years with no more bonus money to be had except that tied to performance. And we know how most players feel about pay as you play as you go deals. They generally end in divorce. And to get out of this deal he'd be forced into wailing his way out of town for the second time in two seasons (ala TO), which would likely hurt his market even if he were playing well enough to garner a much better deal complete with guaranteed money as a 28 or 29 year old FA. Because the market shrinks as you go from potential problem child possibly just needing a change of venue to chronic problem child.

$5M signing bonus aside, basically this deal is $3.7M per year if he's good enough to fill a roster spot, $5M if he's healthy and starts and plays the requisite snaps in most of their games, and up to $7M if he is voted to the Pro Bowl or named league MVP. It's the opportunity to spin the potential that often snags the Poston client. Supposedly Miami was willing to go $5M per straight up, and GB was likely in the same range with a bit more signing bonus money. But neither probably offered the phony 7/7 spin potential.

The problems will arise when LaVar's assessment of his worth and the Giants diverge. And given what transpired during the first two years of his previous extension with the 'Skins (7/$68M/$16M SB), when he was injured and then he was benched for apparent suckitude, that won't necessarily be a rational judgement on the players part. Once he feels the specific incentives were unrealistic (he wanted to play but Coughlin sat him, or he deserved to make the pro bowl but got screwed, etc....) watch out. We just witnessed Seymour extend early to get out of a deal where his incentives were apparently unreachable due to missing 2-3 games in back to back seasons - even as he was widely touted as the best DL in the league. According to Miguel that made his deal a bad deal for the player. Playing time incentives can be tough on balky knees. Branch has had some incentives kick in at 900 yards - if it had read 1000 he'd be feeling the pinch.

If LaVar does in fact have a rumored tendancy to freelance, this is the kind of deal where he would be inclined to. Kind of like Ty making the pro bowl last season on the strength of his INTs. If LaVar believes $2M in incentive based roster bonus is on the line for next season, it could be tough to focus on a disciplined game plan in December unless it's working to his benefit. In an effort to shine and regain some status he could end up with another pissed off old school HC standing between him and his incentives.

Coughlin's already dealing with a handful of hard to discipline talent that doesn't always appear to listen to him and hasn't lived up to it's early hype. LaVar could help the Giants or just add to the frustration. Won't really know if this is a good deal for anyone or a bad deal for everyone for several months. But we do know it's a far cry from the deal Arrington wanted and not guaranteed to be any better than the deal he paid to get out of. That one was scheduled to pay him another $6.5M roster bonus this June and cost the Redskins $12M against the cap. They took a $7M dead cap hit rather than keep him when he refused to restructure. Not that they didn't deserve to. ;)

Incentives

He has a lot of incentives written into his contract. If he plays well, then he will be paid really really well. If not, then his deal isn't for much money. I think if he wasn't quite a free lancer, the pats would have put some interest in him. His deal isn't much of a gamble at all. It basically says that if he is the LaVar of the last couple years, he won't get much money. If he is the LaVar of his first couple seasons, he'll get a kings ransom of money.

In Arrington's contract with the Redskins, they failed to read the final copy of the contract before having Arrington sign it. In the final copy, there was a 6.75 million roster bonus REMOVED from the contract by the Redskins, though it had been in previous versions.

When Arrington went to collect, the Redskins were like "WTF are you talking about. You're contract doesn't include that." And the Postons went scrambling. The Postons tried to blame the Redskins for altering the contract. However, the Redskins positions was, "You didn't read the final version? Tough. Your fault. Not ours."
