Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Again I apologize. We will have to agree to disagree.

I don't know hwc. I can't remember anything he has posted specifically. But I don't know if Milloy or Law were ever considered lockeroom cancers when both were on the team. I don't remember anyone ever saying Milloy was a lockerroom cancer while he was actually on the team.

I'll agree with you on the lockeroom cancer part - I don't know if he was or wasn't either.

My issue with Ty is the calling BB a liar a few years back, and then 2 yrs ago stringing the Pats along for several months, impairing our ability to sign decent CB's, while he waited until almost training camp to sign with KC.

Can he still play? I'll bet BB and Pioli know the answer to that. If he can, and would sign a reasonable deal, then he'll be back.

I personally don't have as much of a problem with it. Law calling Belichick a liar was stupid and wrong, but I knew it wasn't because Law really meant it rather than trying to do an ill-advised negotiation strategy. Doesn't make it right, but I knew it was going to blow over quickly when it blew up in Law's face.

As for the KC thing, I don't have that much of a problem with it since as a free agent Law had the right to get the best deal for himself. I think he probably made the wrong choice long term because the Pats strategy was to play him at CB and move him to FS when he started to slow down. The Chiefs never had those plans.

Word is there is no bad blood between Law and Belichick and if he is willing to come here at a reasonable price, and at his age he need to accept that all he is going to get is a modest contract, I will welcome him back with open arms. I don't feel he burnt any bridges beyond repair.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

I have no inside information.

"Locker room cancer" was probably a bit too strong. It's more like Milloy and Ty Law were pretty sure that their you know what didn't stink and that they still ran the place down in Foxboro like they did under Pete the Poodle. I don't think ever of them really drank the Belichick kool-aid.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Keep in mind also that Ty has an excellent relationship with Bob Kraft and at one point called Kraft his business mentor. They together have done much charity work for Dana Farber.

So the only real questions are: how much will Ty command, how much speed has he really lost and does he have any medical issues?

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Ty Law is my favorite player, and I would love to see him come back for another year or two.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Theres a possibility that Law has more value then just from a playing standpoint.
Let me elaborate here and then rip it to shreds if you'd like.
1. Ellis Hobbs becomes number 1 corner by default when the inevitable takes place. He's already an incredibly ****y guy maybe a little to confident.
Law can tell him hey man i've been there i've won the Superbowls I've got the probowls but you need to stay grounded.
2. Maybe Law coming back would be one more reason for bruschi to return instead of retire.
3.Then they are not forced to overpay or overdraft for a solid corner.
4. BB loves solid veterans this is a guy who knows the system knows what BB expects out of his player how he likes little things done.
5. Is there any coincidence the two defensivebacks that flourish here were with Law?
This is a serious question he said he was taking Eugene and ***ante under his wing.
Said ***ante was gonna be special.
Both Eugene and Assante came in and played very solid for rookies.
Now we can thank Manjudas sure but couldn't some of that been from being around a guy like Ty?
On the flipside maybe that's how ***ante became so greedy.
Either way I believe most Patriot Fans would welcome him back.
If I told you that he would of held on to that int in the superbowl and we would be 19 and 0 you would love him call him a hero!
Winning solves everything and if Ty helps us win BB will forget all and so should the fans.

best, and most logical post i've read all day.
lets face it folks, yes we all turned on ty when he made the famous "feed my family" comment. BUT. we need to think like b.b., and realize the upside to having law back far outweighs the downside. now this is all dependent upon how much he wants. if it is infact, just about the money, then bye ty:D
otherwise, welcome back, and help our rookies become great corners.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

A guy publicly calls his HC a liar and yet in his heart is always a Patriot? lolz
"Honey, I cheated on you but I was thinking of YOU the whole time, I swear."

Ty at his best was a great CB, and I miss the PLAYER he was, don't miss the BS attitude though. It's ok though, I don't have to love every player on the team I love. But no I don't want him back.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

I didn't watch em this year either but last year he picked off manning twice in the playoffs. Its a shame the rest of the chiefs sucked
ty laws success rate 60% just under samuels 62% ha was a top 5 CB

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

I want Law back... I hope he signs here. He was one of my fave pats and will be if he's back.

Same here dude.

There was some nasty stuff between Law and the Pats BEFORE he left town. By the time he did leave, it didn't seem nearly as acrimonious. Obviously not enough to prevent the Pats from going after him again later. Anyway, I hope he comes back.

I'm with you guys. I personally can't fathom the thought that people here don't like him. I'd welcome him back in a hot minute. He has done WAY too much for me to dislike him because of a few stupid comments.

If he does sign with us it will also make Peyton start doing the Manning face, and that is an extra bonus.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Law was playing in a Tampa 2 in KC. That meant he had to play a lot of man-to-man

Say what? You wanna explain why the Tampa 2 is a man coverage scheme for me?

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Though he would be proven depth, I dont know why he thinks there would be a big market for him out there.

He was cut by the Jets

and had 2 avg years with the chiefs..

He had his chances to resign with the Pats, but did not do so.. I think he will go somewhere that will fatten his wallet and waistline

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Actually can't because I did get it wrong. Actually, I guess I misexplained it.

In a Tampa 2, he does have to cover more of the field and has to play man up on his responsibility more than our scheme. They typically play more of a press coverage which is a mix of man and zone. The CB typically engages the WR at the line of scrimmage and mans up until he leaves the zone.

The Pats play a Cover 3 where the CBs play off the line of scrimmage and typically are not engaging any WR until 5-10 yards off the ball.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

It would be great if we can get him back here.

Re: Ty Law: "My Heart Is Always With The Patriots"

Sounds like a guy looking for a job.

Re: Ty Law Is In Boston Tonight

Thanks, MoRocks. I figured somebody had played with the numbers.

I'm not sure Law isn't jerking the Pats' chain again right now, trying to drum up some interest in his flagging career somewhere in the league by trying to make it look like the Pats are interested.

I think it was Football Outsiders that ran a feature on Law last year showing that he was one of the worst CBs in the league. Finished. Toast.

He'd probably be a good veteran backup at vet minimum...a guy who could step in and give you some snaps. But, he's no first tier corner at this stage of his career.

I don't put as much stock in what FO has to say as some here do. Stats compiled based on amateur broadcast tape evaluation by a bunch of well meaning wannabes who are often oblivious to scheme variables...

But just for chucks, much to FO's chagrin, Ty was in the upper eschelon in 2007 through 13 weeks by their metrics, so...

http://www.footballoutsiders.com/2007/12/21/ramblings/stat-analysis/5920/?forprint=true

He was obviously playing on a defense and for a HC who were not nearly comparable to those AS was playing for and with. Yet at the end of the day the old ballhawk managed 4 picks and a sack to Mr. Franchise Tag's pick 6. And then of course there were the 10 picks on one leg for a team that flat out sucked in 2005. Such is the life of the ballhawk.

I'd still take him back if I thought he was capable of making a committment without playing games for 3 months to squeeze any potential suitors, and if I believed he was willing to bust his ass for 10 months which was something he didn't have to commit to do for the Herminator. I think Bill still would too. If he just wants to coast through his last couple of seasons in the league and amass as much as he can without overextending himself, I'd pass. But if he wants to re-establish his connection to a dynasty (under seige so to speak), they I'd take a motivated Ty Law back for Duane Starks money any time. He would still remain the highest paid CB on this team, even if we drafted a couple of corners among our top 4-5 picks. And if we bolster that pass rush to the point it consistently does more than almost work, I think Hobbs and Law and Gay or another vet plus some talented kids would be sufficient to do just a bit better than we did in that last drive against the Giants with the potential $30M man manning the lc. And that is all we need our secondary to do behind an upgraded/deeper front 7. A hair better.

Re: Ty Law Is In Boston Tonight

Not that I think Hobbs should lose his starting job but to those who
say that a rookie can't start, I can think of 2 dbs right off the bat that did
start and did very well. I give you Champ Bailey and Sean Taylor.
Charles Woodson too.
Hell even Ty Law started his first year.
Or at least these players saw plenty of playing time.

Edit: I just verified this for myself. All the aforementioned started at least 14 games their rookie season.
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/L/LawxTy00.htm

The site has search box at the upper right corner if you want to check other players.

Law started 7 although he was either active or appeared in 14 games. His stats were eerily similar to...Ellis Hobbs. And they remained so for a couple of seasons, until he approached double digit sacks in 1998 and then cost someone (us, actually) a monster bundle contract which was eventually what led to his exit from Foxboro.

Problem is we still have to play 16 or hopefully 19 games next season beginning in September. Even if they start rookies, particularly at that position, they tend to get schooled out of the gate. And few college players are prepared to make the jump from 10-12 game seasons to 19 game seasons without hitting a wall. Sean Taylor never had a chance to. Neither did Bailey or Woodson whose teams like Ty's when drafted were either borderline contenders who got knocked off early or didn't make the playoffs. There is always a learning curve, and learning on the job isn't always a viable option if your team has current Superbowl aspirations.
