Dan Shaughnessy: Biggest douche bag of them all?

Why? He sounds like a lot of you in this board from what the article said. So he fits right in here

What did he say?

I last read the globe sports pages back when I was in college, in the early 00's, when they took a turn for the worse. I occasionally see folks discussing globe Patriots coverage on Twitter and it seems that they have fallen even further from its heyday.

There is nothing he said in his article that is not true. I just read it and I agree 100% with Dan here.
His article attempts to diminish what Brady did prior to 2019.
That’s wrong.
No Patriot fan could ever have any issue with Brady prior to 2019. He was pretty much perfect.
His actions in 2019 were not good but it takes nothing away from the prior 19 years.

Old Man Dan still holds the 67 Red Sox who you know lost above the 04 Red Sox because he considers the team tainted due to Manny and Ortiz. This is just who he is, an old as.shole where everything in the past when he was young and in his prime was the best it ever was or will be and everything today is inferior.

The ‘75 team is still my favorite.

This is why I don't take him and Bob Ryan seriously. They are clearly just old "back in my day" fans who lionize the 60's and 70's simply because that's the era they grew up aroundand they use that as a reason to put down everything else. Also I think Dan secretly liked the idea of the Red Sox being perpetually cursed because it was an easier sell to him than them being one of the most successful teams of the 20 years. He doesn't know how to sell positivity.

The glorification and in some ways deification of the Fellowship of the Miserable perpetually chasing that elusive goal which is always just out of reach but never considered outright impossible is not simply a story of Red Sox fans but philosophically an encapsulation of the human condition. It’s great drama, Sisyphus forever doomed to push that boulder. Cubs fans had it too. To a large extent a team like the Toronto Maple Leafs still has it. So when it ends, that part of the drama is indeed over. It’s obviously worth it if you’re a fan first but if you are in this for the story, the drama, and the struggle of it all, which most writers are, it’s ultimately a let down after the initial euphoria wears off. So it’s understandable.

But he’s still an insufferable as.shole about it. And it’s simply a fact that he deeply resents that Baseball over the last 15 years has dipped in popularity and mindshare precipitously not only in Boston but especially nationwide while football has exploded into a religion. And no team or athlete was more tied to that explosion than the Pats and Brady.

Yes Shaughnesswsy is an a**hole. But....

I do believe the days in the 40's, 50's 60"s and 70's when there was no free agency and many great players would stay with teams for their entire career was a special era for baseball and all pro sports. Fast forward to today when very good (but not all time great players) like Soto, Machado, Bradley Beal and yes even Mookie Betts get guaranteed hundreds of million dollars dollars and thus by the time they are 24 years old have multi generational wealth, private jets etc.....it takes something away from the game. After they get big dollars...many of them understandably do not have the same dedication to the game and their team and the city's fans that puts them up on a pedestal. Even great players like Trout.....paying them 400 million, in my view takes away from the game...makes them unrelatable and puts them in a different world.

Its not always about things "were the best in my era", but its also about some of destructive forces that have taken over pro sports, especially free agency, legalized gambling, out of control salaries. Because of free agency, multigenerational wealth for even average players....has put a huge wall between fans and players.

I’ve been a Boston sport fan since the 70’s & Shaughnessy is the biggest B-bag by far. Invented a stupid “curse”. He should have been done after 2004. No one else comes close.
