Let's talk cornerbacks and where some might slot in now and in the future. Yes, I know its the offseason, yes it is very early, just bored at work and wanted to think football for a few minutes.

Jalen Mills - Roster lock for 22, playing for a job in 23 (1.2 dead/5.3 savings)
Malcolm Butler - Likely on the 22 roster, playing for a job in 23 (250k dead/2.5 mil savings)
Jack Jones - On the roster
Terrance Mitchell/JoeJuan Williams -

Jonathan Jones - Likely on 22 roster / could be a surprise cut / D. McCourty replacement
Marcus Jones - Slot or outside
Myles Bryant/Shaun Wade - See T. Mitchell/J. Williams note

Just my opinion, which is 95% likely to be wrong.

Mills
Butler
Jones
Mitchell
JJ
MJ

Once again...very likely wrong.

Jon Jones getting cut/traded would be a shock because this CB group is pretty bad.

However, if the rookies show any promise, this will be Jon Jones' last year. Bill will not pay him again, as he's checked out quite a bit in big games when the Pats needed him the most. See Aqib Talib.

The one thing that stands out to me is J. Jones......you said he could be a surprise cut?

That would be the shocker of the decade. He is a very good slot corner and it showed when we played buffalo last year when we couldn't get off the field. J. Jones is going to be a starter and one of our better d-backs.

Agree, would be a surprise. Just with his contract and their drafting/trading the last few years makes it seem like a possibility. I'm more in the camp of him getting more FS reps.

And now I'm reading more things on these guys, thinking Jack Jones could be more of a slot guy. Thinking Jonathan Jones sticks in 22 and these young guys take over in 23 is the likely scenario.

I think the projection is Jack Jones outside with Marcus Jones inside along with possibly S Wade.

Did you mean Marcus Jones? Marcus is a short quick guy and great in the slot, and Jack is taller than Marcus and played on the outside at USC and ASU. I have not researched the DBs a lot, but based on physical attributes and where they played in college, I think MJ and JJ are slot and outside respectively. The wild card is Wade as he played both positions in college, but he could not get on the field last year in front of Bryant, so I am not hopeful about his prospects.

Every once in awhile some things come across the newsfeed and just read a film room on Jack Jones that thinks he's best suited for the slot position. The same one also mention Marcus Jones maybe in a safety role so maybe not very accurate of a report.

pick 5

4 locks or almost locks if healthy: Mills, Jones, Jones, Jones
competing for the 5th spot: Butler, Mitchell, Wade, Williams, Bryant

Agree with the four locks, think they will maybe keep 6, so 2 out of that list. Wade and Butler would be my guess right now.

NINE defensive backs that can play the positions is plenty. We have 4 very good safeties in addition to the 5 corners, one of which will be inactive in each game.

I do not think a 5'8" guy is going to play FS, and we are all set at SS, so I highly doubt the Pats drafted Marcus Jones to play safety. I think he will be a returner and a slot corner, although he did play some WR in college so maybe some slot WR? If he transitions to a slot WR I would guess that is next year at the earliest.

I'm kind of on board there. Have to count those ST'ers that are technically DB's as well.

Totally agree. Was in an article from NESN I believe mentioning that he had Adrian Phillips qualities. I'm with you that that made me scratch my head a bit. Thinking Jack Jones could be looking at that #2 position, and Marcus Jones as the slot next year. Need a true #1, but we've know that for awhile now.

Slater, Bethel and Davis are our top 3 STers. So, yes, there would be 11 players listed as DB's: 9 position players and 2 Ster's.

I suspect the hope is that he will start at slot CB in 2023.

Not impressed with DBs right now...

Joejuan Williams, the second-rounder who’s played in just one game over his first three seasons..

Another loser!!

Outside corners - mills, Mitchell and butler
Slot corners - Jon jones
Either - jack jones, wade
Start year on pup - Marcus jones
Practice squad - hafford
