Roster Acquisitions - Next Step: Defense

Is there a chance Butler doesn’t make the team with all the young rooks competing?
With similar size and skill set as Butler?

A chance? At 32? Butler was not fast in his 20s, can't be improved. There is M Jones, Jack Jones, Wade, and Bledsoe. If 3 out of the 4 are keepers I would expect Butler would be released.

Shelton is 29...still relatively young. I think they should bring him in for a look-see. I'd be ok with the 2019 version...

BB knows Shelton well and let him walk. I am not sure why as I thought he was better than Carl Davis. I do not understand why, but I doubt Shelton is coming back.

Bledsoe is irrelevant to the decision at CB.

Yes, Wade might beat out Butler, or not.

BTW, Mitchell hasn't been cut yet.

Butler can potentially play safety. Just like JMac moved back and helped at safety when he slowed down.

Chris' question was "is it possible Butler does not make the team?". Butler could be beaten out at CB and still stick as a safety. If Bledsoe develops Butler will not stick at safety either, and might be released. You are changing the question - Chris did not say "at CB" so I tried to answer the question completely.

OK, I guess that I need to say that, barring inuries, Butler has ZERO chance at making the 53 as a safety. We have McCourty, Phillips. Duggar and Peppers. [yes, Butler could beat out Bledsoe for the non-existent 5th position spot at safety.

And no, Bulter will not beat out bethel or Davis as a Ster.

So yes, Butler needs to make the team as an outside CB.

Yes, I mostly agree. If you think there is always hope, you have not been a Pats fan very long. In 2020 we had a different QB and it was painful watching games because there was no hope.
I haven't been a Pats fan that long- just since 1961. It took me one year to switch over from the NYG. Guess I'm just a johnny come lately.
I feel your 2020 pain. But that was nothing compared to the early 90's,the darkest of days. But watching Cam in 2020 was rough. Maybe even as rough as enduring Joe Kapp.
Unlike a lot, maybe even most, I don't have a problem with this draft. I liked the Strange pick. I'm no college prospect expert but I sure as hell didnt eant alligator-armed McDaniels over Strange.
Ive never paid much attention to anyone else's draft grades. Patriots always have their own. And what A lot of people dont realize is if the Pats saw Strange and Thornton as worthy if 1st and 2nd rd picks I GUARANTEE you there was at least one other team that did as well and would've snatched both players very shortly thereafter if NE passed on em.
So Im not unhappy with this draft. Strange and Thornton fill 2 huge needs, potentially.
Pats had a lot of needs to fill. The cb situation is not ideal. But truth is none of us knows how it all shakes out for a few years. So yes my son, there is hope.

Thanks. I started following in the early 70s so you have me beat by 10 years, old man.

If we had not traded down and picked Zion, the level of revolt would have been a lot less, but the trade down and picking Strange was a much better football move IMO. We ended up with Strange, Jack Jones, Bailey Zappe, and the Panthers 2023 3rd round pick versus Zion - that will go down as a great trade. I have seen it said that we should have moved up two spots and chosen Penning - that is probably correct IMO. The Texans chose Kenyon Green with the 15th pick - imagine how bad that pick was.

Barring injuries, retirements and trades = we have no idea in early May what the early September roster will look like. Why did you put ZERO in all caps? LOL. In early May you are making predictions for early September roster positions with ALL CAPS?

Historically speaking there are on average 8-10 different players on the season-ending PS and active roster than the Week 1 ones.

NFL rosters are fluid.

Good time to start- Pats were a lot of fun to watch in mid-late 70's. Had some really good teams and at least one great one that should've won our 1st Lombardi had it not been for the slimy-one-who-shall-not-be-named.
And yes,I am old. But in a lot better shape than many young guys here who posted they couldn't do 38 pushups. I could 38 with my eyes closed.

Why do you close your eyes when you do pushups?

Yessir.
1976 was my sophomore year in HS and when I really started to dig into the Patriots' roster. Before then watching football was as murky as playing with the vibrating electric football game that was usually buried soon after Christmas.
Relative to this thread though; I am really curious about the evolution of our defense, scheme wise. It has taken a different shape recently, but I have a feeling that the metamorphosis isn't near done.

I have grave concerns about the linebacking corps. Really, the entire front 7. There's potential there to be good, and I think BB not drafting anyone at LB tells you that he's got reason for optimism with this group. But it's just potential. Long way to go before it's realized. But wouldn't it be amazing if these young fast LBs started flying all over the field making plays?

I usually pile 10 + large bags of ice on my back and head to add a little challenge. By the time I reach 100 the ice starts melting and gets in my eyes

You should start one of those on-line "challenges", everyone would copy you, and you would become famous. The "pushup ice bag" challenge. Sounds like a winner to me. You could market t-shirts and a new type of pushup goggles that keep sweat and melting ice out of your eyes. Seize the moment - you could go viral. You could be rich too. Congratulations!!! :)

Usually, I don't even state a 53 man roster, only a 60 man roster, primarily because of injuries.

I am not predicting that Butler will or won't make the 53. What I am saying is that he is not a safety. He could be shifted if we had a dire need at safety. However, we don't. We have 4 solid safeties and a developing player from last year. So, by personal view is that Butler won't be on the 53 as a safety or a backup LG.

Thats some great ideas. I should hire you as my agent/ business mgr. You don't mind working long hours in exchange for (distant) future passive income do you?
That takes vision and you have it.

You mean I am special? Can you talk to my wife?

Slacker you had to wait to 1961,:) I guess I just couldn't wait living in Somerville at the time jumped right on the band wagon. For everything said about Billy Sullivan he did bring us the Patriots. In some ways the early years were a lot more fun then now even though they didn't get to any of the big games. I can remember Nickerson field, Harvard and all the hijinks now with fondness. Miss that now, it has become much more of a business and less of just let's have fun.

Oh well time marches on and everything changes. I hope you had as much fun with them in the early years as I did.
