DRAFT Patriots select WR Tyquan Thornton at 50.

Interesting to find Thornton and Pickens have such similar mock draftables. Both within 1 inch of each other and small hands.

Pickens has more weight but still bottom third of WRs. Thornton significantly faster, better jumps, and more wingspan.

Maybe Pats were locked into getting a tall outside receiver type and Pickens maturity questions led them to prefer Thornton.

Gaining 10 to 20 lbs does not necessarily mean a loss of speed and may actually increase overall quickness

Agreed, 20lbs might be too much, but 10+ is fine. That is why the Olympics test for PEDs - because if the track athletes bulk up, they run faster. Bulking up and running slower is an AMAZING take on PatsFans - defies all evidence, but have at it.

Track athletes bulk up all the time and run faster. Where did you get "runs a 4.38 instead of a 4.28"?

Someone suggested that if he bulked up he would get slower, and I was trying to say that he'd still be really fast given his starting point. Adding 10 pounds of muscle isn't going to turn a 4.28 guy into a player with average speed. That's all I was trying to say.

Understood. If he bulks up 10 lbs then a 4.28 guy can run a 4.25 - 4.27. PEDs bulk athletes up so they can run faster.

Thornton will be the best WR drafted since D. Branch (maybe that's not saying much)..

Who’s going to f up first calling him Tyquan Underwood?

My biggest concern on Thorton is his glacially SLOW 3 cone time. 7.2 is slower than our QB. its slower than a 350lb NT. So add the micromini hands, the rail thin physic, the injuries, and the fact he was a day 3 pick on many board AND we felt we had the need to trade UP to get him and I'm not worried a bit about this pick.
Faster 40 than Tyreek Hill.

Let's pencil in 20 TDs from Jones to Thornton. It IS draft weekend :D

Realistically he probably wont get the looks... this is probably Chad Jackson's breakout year.

I sit shaking my head
Team after team pass on these players that they want. Reason being is they have spent hours on top of hours researching, interviewing, having them in for visits. They all know what intangibles that they need to fit their system and team chemistry
Just because Mel Kiper or some other hack draft guru has some other player higher because they watched 2 hours of film on them. Then all those teams must be wrong

Kiper s not a draft guru by any stretch - he stands firmly (and it seems proudly) in the draft clown category

The room is already pretty crowded at this point, I think another addition means both Agholor and Harry have to go. We already have Meyers, Bourne, Parker, Agholor, Thornton, Harry and you really only need 4 non-ST, non-return specialist receivers on a roster, 5 at most.

Its May 1 - they use 10-12 WRs at this time

Don't you think this might be a little too gloom and doomy.

You mention Derek Rivers and Antonio Garcia but we lost our top 2 draft picks. We lost a 1st rounder the next year. And a 4th. Trading them away for players, Deflategate nonsense, even the filming thing from 2 years ago. You can't hold these against Belichick.

As for Harry, go back to a few years ago and read this board. Everyone was ecstatic. A lot of people loved Harry. Harry was not at all a reach. He was projected there. And you can talk about the others you mention, but go back and read Metcalf's predraft assessment. I remember it like yesterday. There's a reason Metcalf dropped to the bottom of the 2nd round and NO ONE picked him before then. He was called lazy, a horrible route runner, a combine freak.

In retrospect, the Harry pick is horrible. But it definitely is not an example of Belichick overreaching. I even wonder who convinced Belichick to make this very un-Belichickian pick. Is this Josh McD trying to convince BB that Harry was B. Marshall?
No one, I mean no one had Harry rated above the likes of AJ Brown, whose film blew away Harry’s

Harry pick in retrospect was horrible. However, people on this board were happy. There were a number of folks who wanted AJ Brown or Metcalf, but thought Harry had all the tools. Here's his Official NFL scouting report, which said that Harry was going to be a solid starter.

"All this talk about (his lack of) separation is overdone. In the league, nobody gets that much separation anyway. You have to know how to use your body and route leverage and you need strong hands. From what I've seen of him, he does all that stuff well." -- Wide receivers coach with AFC team
