With Gilmore gone. JC Jackson needs to be signed long term...

Ha.

....and i would have argued against it. :p
That's the beauty of this place.

It's funny how much I've changed over the years. I've always been a staunch supporter of players over coaches on the field but I gave the owners a little leeway with negotiations.
That has changed dramatically after years of watching the owners abuse the players with contracts that aren't worth the paper they're printed on.

Anyway, always a pleasure but I need to take off. We can talk about this and JCJ at another time.

What about solar panels?

I'm not an expert but what did you have in mind? I'm all for renewable energy and a future that doesn't rely on digging up dinosaur oil and burning it into the atmosphere.

Also tied to the rabbit hole I dove down in the other thread about deflated 2021 dollars... yep, guarantee him the money now, pay it later, assuming the brain trust is as sold as we are. And apparently they're sold enough to tell Gilmore to hit the road.

Bill hasn't paid his corners on their second contract.

Law
Samuel
Talib
Revis
Butler
Gilmore
Law should’ve been re-signed as Bill didn’t have a replacement and the Pats were just coming off of a Super Bowl victory with very little needs. Law went on to have one of his best years in NY while the Pats got bombs dropped on them by Jake Plummer in Denver losing in the divisional round.

Samuel actually wanted to leave after the 2006 season which he told Terrell Owens on his podcast you can see on YouTube. He was furious over getting tagged and only agreed to play on the tag if Bill didn’t tag him again after 2007.

Talib had to go after he got injured two consecutive years in the AFCCG. He was an awesome CB and a Gilmore esque reclamation project, but he let the team down two years in a row. Revis became available so you don’t pass that up. Who knew Talib would become Iron Man?

Revis was great in 2014 but he clearly lost a step and wasn’t worth what he got from the Jets. Butler was making noise before his catch heard around the world.

Butler was regressing and they already signed Gilmore to a big deal.

Gilmore gets signed if the Pats were a contender.

I would make him a slightly "team friendly" offer right now....we could get Jackson signed long term for 1-2 million less annually than what the market will likely throw at him in March.
Any player in the last year is crazy to accept a team friendly deal - for ANY team - the free agency market is too unpredictable - usually to the higher for young players - lower for older (remember a couple "go test the market" guys that came back and signed). The time you can get away with that is usually in the gamble stage of 2-3 years early.

There's also the emotional game side - does such an offer "hurt the feelings" of a player who feels they are worth more? Is the agent savvy enough to play that card (usually - yes) to make us fans and media get on the player's side every time "WE HAVE TO PAY HIM WHAT HE WANTS! WE JUST HAVE TO!!!!

There's also the hidden aspects fans and most media never see. How is he as a teammate? A leader (as there usually is a correlation (not causation) of "highest paid" at a given position and leadership)? Does it seem like he's peaked or will continue to grow in seeing him in both games and practice (and weight room and film study)? Does he seem like a "rest on his laurels "get paid/get complacent" type?

The variables are legion and as far from black and white as decisions can be.

Didn't Gronk accept a "team friendly" extension a few seasons before his rookie deal expired?

Anyway, yeah...its crazy to accept a team friendly deal, but the other side of the coin is injuries.....look at Gilmore right now, he can't get paid....had he never been hurt...we might have a 2nd round pick by now...

a few seasons before
The key word is "few" vs the last season before free agency (and not even a full last in JC Jackson's case since they're in season now).

I don't know the numbers league wide of good players in the last year of their first or second year and still producing at a high level re-signing this late, but unless it's as the "highest paid at the position" or close to it - any agent worth his salt is going to tell his client to test the market.

Did you actually watch Law play that year? He had a good "Pick Year" or what I call an "Asante" year. The Jets fans wanted him gone in the middle of the season. He had 10 picks....I think...some can look it up and correct me. He was terrible. There is a reason he ended up in KC. Didn't read any further. Couldn't adjust to the new rules. PI's, holdings etc...it was bad for him.

Jets were 20M+ over the cap. That’s why.

I should of read further. Samuel was ball hawk that couldn't cover a cold or catch it when it mattered the most!

Talib was a beast. Injuries happen.

Revis was a stud with us. We didn't ask him to cover half the field.

Butler was solid.

June 2012, before his third season started. [GRONK's draft class was the last one eligible for draftees to be extended that soon. The last person to "benefit" from that extension was . . . another TE.]

Pats are likely waiting a few more weeks before deciding their future plans with JC. He's most certainly improved.

I like his game but he isn't a true shut down corner..but he is a legitimate starting cb1 in the NFL.

Gilmore's location does not determine Jackson's needs regarding a contract.

I think they wouldn’t mind to extend him now; but unfortunately the same cap limitations that drove Gilmore’s current location will drive them to not make an offer til the season is over. I think they have plenty of cap room long-term, but not THIS YEAR.

That takes what should be a no brainer possible for a small hometown discount into a 50-50 proposition that could blow up into a bidding war we walk away from.

McCourty and Jackson both leaving in the same year is horrifying. Who the hell besides Judon will be worth a damn on that defense?
Dugger and Uche. But your point still stands concerning the secondary.

No Kidding. JC Jackson's agent is just licking his chops right now. Pats have no choice but to give Jackson his payday as he's now the #1 corner and there's no replacement level player the Pats have at hand or in the near future.

The original post refers to Jackson's needs, not the Pats' needs. I agree the Pats would be better off with him signed long term.
