2021 Dolphins vs Patriots pre game thread

One of a few Pats threads on the main forum
They don't seem as rabid, as arrogant as they use to be 10-15 years ago, or better yet in the ninties. They would call up weei and say things such as "its and insult for the dolphins to be on the same field as the patsies" one thing that caught my attention, they continually talk about having a much better QB in Tua, who they potrait as the second coming of Marino, and that Mac is a rookie. Tua has only played a handful of games himself, and don't seem to take into consideration that the patriots put much more emphasis on running the football in all likely hood.

This will be a good one. Two closely matched teams in normal circumstances. Right now I really like the Patriots.

QB: Mac < Tua (for now). I think the difference in play here will decide things. How close can the rookie close the gap, or can he actually have a better day? I wouldn't expect it start 1, but it would certainly make things tough on Miami
RB: Pats Core >> Dolphins Core - Gaskin and Ahmed aren't bad, but they aren't a special duo. Gaskin can do a bit of everything so we need to be ready for anything when he's on the field. But the Pats win here in both top liners and depth.
WR: Pats Core > Dolphins Core - This would easily be the Dolphins if they had Fuller. Right now they are hurting. They have the best WR in Parker but not much else after him yet. Waddle in his first NFL start probably won't be a huge factor, next time they play though look out. One of the rare times I expect the Pats have the WR edge.
TE: Pats Core > Dolphins - Gesicki is a good TE. But he can't equal both Smith and Henry.
OL: Pats >> Dolphins - There won't be many times this year that the Pats don't win this match up if they stay healthy. Simply put. One of their better OL men from last year is now a back up for us (Karras). They also lost Ereck Flowers and have a lot of young guys trying to work their way in. Their OL is going through a bit of a transition right now as far as I know and it should have some issues.

The Pats on paper should be fielding a much better offense than Miami, the question is can their rookie QB take advantage?

DL Pats Core < Dolphins Core - The Pats did well adding to this group, but it still isn't the strength we'd like it to be, but it will be improved for sure. The Dolphins have the potential makings of a very good core going forward. Davis in his 2nd year could be very interesting. They also may have found something with Sieler. But in the end the foundation is Wilkins an Ogbah.
LB Pats Core >>> Dolphins Core - Simply put, the Dolphins lost their best LB and we signed him. Add in Judon and Hightower and this isn't even close. I had to look up the names of their LBs. A fair amount of former Pats cast offs and some guys I don't know. A tiny bit of digging didn't change my mind much. This egde is absolutely staggering. Not even on the same planet.
CB Pats Core < Dolphins Core - With no Gilmore this is an easy Dolphins win. They added the still fairly capable Jason McCourty for barely anything, a crime we didn't resign him for that contract looking at it now. Byron Jones has lost some luster from when he was one of the best young CBs in the league, but the dude can still ball and is among the better starting outside guys for sure. Add in their headliner Howards and some potentially nice depth and they look very solid here.
S Pats Core > Dolphins Core. The Dolphins lost their top Safety Bobby McCain and did nothing to replace him. It feels like they are hoping young unproven guys step up. IDK, You tell me if you know something i don't. Try transitioned Eric Rowe here who is okay, but not much behind him.

Looking at this game now, I'm surprised it ONLY has a 3 point spread. The Patriots have the much better 2-53 man roster. And the Dolphins QB situation doesn't give me much hope that any difference there can overcome that. Bottom line IMO. If Mac Jones plays it relatively safe and doesn't allow a pick 6 to Howard or we have a bunch of fumbles/penalties. I don't see how this game is all that close right now.

"Waddle in his first NFL start probably won't be a huge factor"

Tua and Waddle played together. They will be real comfortable together.

It's funny they refer to the BB's spending this offseason as a generic spending spree by generic team, like it was Daniel Snyder throwing money around. The reloading of this team was architectural beauty. Debate the Agholor and Bourne signings all you want, but the rest was a sight to behold in roster construction.

yea BB is great at finding quality defenders his expertise area. Judon is a pro bowl talent.

There is no debate about it. 25 million guaranteed to Brittle Henry and 13 million to JAGoflor is ludicrous. Mourne as a starting WR worries me greatly.

The fact they played together will help them get comfortable fast, but new NFL concepts, NFL speed and physicality and a different scheme than he played at college will slow him down early most likely. Look at most rookie WRs. top drafted ones can have good first years, but usually the first few games are not great. Now this isn't always the case, but it is more often than not. I'm going with those percentages. Maybe he will come in week 1 and be great. It wouldn't be outside the realm of possibility for sure. I just see it as less likely than being meh. So I am banking on the later option.
I stopped reading after this...LOL

devante Parker is way better than anyone we have and Jayden Waddle is so fast he makes our WRs look like they are moving in slow motion

Too bad you did. I explained my reasoning. And I also said Parker is the best WR in this game. I'm just not banking on a rookie in his first start behind JAGS. I think they will have the better #1 by a good margin. But I like our #2 and #3 more for THIS GAME. Could Waddle have a great game? Yes. Read above. I'm playing the historical averages. It will be a completely different story when we play then later. Hell, if this game was even just 2 or 3 weeks later under the same circumstances, I would probably pick Miami's core, just cause I'd trust Waddle so much with with the tiniest bit of seasoning.

We had several practices with other teams. Those are at least as valuable as preseason games.
Yet we have had those same shared practices in years with four preseason games as well and the first game is still (usually) one in which tackling is suspect, breakdowns occur offensively and defensively, scheme is pretty vanilla to cut down on communication issues, etc.

I've just never seen a scenario where less of something equals better product.

Doesnt mean it won't get better and it is absolutely an equal situation for both teams.

The reverse spin messes you up
I remember Collinsworth talking about this, coming to the NFL and playing with Boomer Esiason. He had never played with a lefty QB. Any hands-catcher (what you are supposed to do) instinctively turns the hands a little bit while catching to deal with the spin. When the spin is opposite it really messes you up, until you adjust.

It's the same principle with right- vs. left-footed punters. Opposite spin messes you up. One or two extra muffed punts in a season--- it's why Bill always went with lefties, until now.

It will be interesting to see how Waddle does, I really have no idea. Normally I would expect a rookie WR to struggle for exactly the reasons you mentioned, different NFL schemes and to an extend NFL speed and physicality (although he played some pretty good DBs in the SEC). But with Waddle, I'm not sure, he is just such a naturally dynamic player, I could see him surprising a few DBs until there is more game film on him. Plus, he has played with Tua before of course.

There are some players that have such natural talent that everything comes easy to them. Others, are self-made players that make themselves great from hard work, intelligence, and intensive study. We had the greatest self-made talent of all time, Tom Brady. And Mac appears to be in the same mold, a self-made achiever who succeeds by intelligence and a fanatical work ethic (but not the same level of talent or potential as Brady of course).

Waddle is definitely in the natural talent category (that doesn't mean he won't work hard), he was electrifying from the first moment he touched a football at Alabama, so he might be more effective than one would expect from a normal NFL rookie WR, we will just have to see. And, I hope the NE punt return team is ready for him, he can be dangerous.

One WR who was a good player in his rookie year was Deion Branch, a.k.a. The Twig. Looked great at Smithfield training camp.
Caught 6 passes in that wild KC opener. Not much yardage, but you could tell he was a keeper. :)

isnt this Ernie's last year?

Another prediction:

Rham sees a lot of time with short yardage and goal line carries if they are able to consistently move the ball. Harris and Rham are going to wear teams out and open up the seams for Henry/Smith off of play action.

He also looks smooth catching passes out of the backfield. Rham is a future star.

My prediction:

The Patriots will show they are a much better team than expected. The Patriots will have a top 3 scoring defense even with JoeJuan or Mills started on the outside. In fact they will have the top scoring defense in the NFL.

The offense will be slightly above average.

The Dolphins won't score, Tua will throw 2 picks due to the pressure from Judon, Barmore and Uche. One to Dugger and the other to JC. The Patriots score on a pick 6 and through a strong running game and timely passes from Mac in his debut the Patriots roll over the Dolphins.

27-13

After that game, the NFL media will talk about the Patriots 2021 revenge tour.

Yeah I think Harris& Rhododendron will be the primary engine of this offense. Especially with a rookie qb although a promising one.

I feel the exact opposite. I think the Pats O has a chance to be top 10 depending on health. The defense I am afraid will revert to bend don't break without Gilmore.
