Still No # 1WR

There is some major underestimation going on here for our WRs... WR1 is just a label. Patriots have receiving options at TE and RB that factor into things.

Don't get caught up in the hype. KC does just fine with only having 1 speedy wr worth a damn and a great receiving TE.

Agholor will be just fine as "wr1" aka guy challenging defenses deep. Don't sleep on Bourne and Meyers underneath.

sleep on Meyers

I can't believe there are people that still are after last year His production last year over a 16 game span would have had him at around 1100 yards. Which would have had him just outside the top 10 in receiving yards but he did it with poor QB play and not much help around him. Obviously his production probably won't be like that because you got Smith, Henry, Agholor and Bourne but still not a bad 4/5 option to have. It's why a #1 WR tag is so overblown in a team that has two legitimate #1 TEs

When the Patriots didn't take a wr in the middle of the draft, I sat back on my couch and took a shot for Meyers.

Classic rags to riches Patriots story. Grinder - Smart - Patient - Reliable.

Outside of Randy Moss, when have the Pats had a “#1 receiver” ? It’s always receiver by committee. There were times Gronk was the best receiver, sometimes it was Edelman. Sometimes it was Troy Brown, sometimes it was Deion Branch. They’ve never had a conventional #1 receiver in the Belichick era, even Moss split receptions with Welker, who usually had more catches. This offense will run through the TEs in 2022, and be run heavy.
The Patriots (and now the Bucs) have been using slot receivers as the WR1. Brown/Welker/Edelman was the WR1, just as Godwin was Brady's WR1 in Tampa last year. It's a Brady/system thing where the bread and butter player a/k/a WR1 is not necessarily the OWR1. It's really because of how the team attacks opponents via the passing game.

What the Patriots have routinely been without is the middle-deep threat.

I don't necessarily want a #1 WR , just a WR who is fast enough to take the top off the defense. Someone who can return kickoffs and be a threat to go all the way.

We have now gone through free agency and the draft and surprisingly we still do not have anything close to a # 1 receiver on the team. High concern as there is no deep threat or a player that can "take the top" off the defense.
Its not Agholor, Bourne or Jakoby Myers that is for sure. Edelman's retirement has made this even more of a huge hole.
Now all that is left is for the June first other teams' castoffs to choose from. I think this was a big oversight and will limit how effective Cam can be and also the TE's ceilings.
The other teams in the AFC East have spent mightily on this over past 2 years

1. Bills- Stefan Diggs
2. Dolphins Jaylon Waddle
3. Jets- Corey Davis and Elijah Moore.

I still believe the pats offense will be somewhat anemic this year. Hopefully the defense, will cover for offense shortcomings.
Looks like addressing WR1 will have to wait until 2022.

Wow - leading contender for worst post of the day.

1. Agholor was one of the top deep threats the league last year. He was that type of receiver in college as well. Philadelphia just never utilized him properly. He was second in the league in yards per catch and lead the league in touchdown catches of greater than 20 yards.

2. Do you actually believe in their current wide receiver crew and lack of a wide receiver draft pick was a “oversight“? So your theory is that they just forgot to draft a wide receiver last year or this year? Belichick puts more planning into his daily bowel movements than you put into any aspect of your life.

3. Of the ACF East wide receivers that you listed, only one (Diggs) is a true #1. Davis was not even a true number two wide receiver until last year and Agholor had a more impactful 2020 than he did. Waddle definitely has the potential to be a WR1 but hasn’t played a game in the NFL and barely played at all last year in college, due to injury. I love Moore as a prospect but, simile, there is no guarantee he is going to be a start in the NFL and the Jets used an early second round pick on him, despite their relatively strong wide receiver crew and more pressing holes in their lineup. Remember your praise for the Jets when the patriots are trouncing them twice later this year.

4. Nobody expected them to sign the top two tight ends on the free-agent market and, similarly, nobody but the coaching staff and key front office guys know what scheme or personnel they plan to use this year. I certainly don’t and neither do you, so why don’t you just wait to see the offense before telling us with such certainty which holes the opposition will be able to exploit.

Teams will be able to stack the middle and cover the seams and center of the field on short and intermediate roots.
I think more capital should have been spent on this in the draft.

True. But, we had the best QB. We can’t expect Mac to be TB12. We need to make it easier for him

Belichick never believed in a true #1 WR. When Brady was suspended for four games, Belichick didn't get a true #1 receiver to make Garoppolo's job easier.

Also I'll add Julio Jones and OBJ are on the trade block .... Just saying.

Jones is a pipe dream. At Jones' age, I don't see Belichick making that much of an investment in him where Mac Jones is still so young and inexperienced. How many more years will Julio play at an elite level or has that ship sailed already? Will Jones rebound after a down/injury filled year? Or is his body starting to break down?

He might trade for OBJ just because he is three years younger and could be around and still elite if and when Mac Jones comes into his own. Although it has been several years that he played at an elite level.

Nelson Agholor averaged 18.7 yards per catch. That's about "take the top off the defense" as it gets.

One thing to think about is next year’s draft. I would think that Alabama WR John Metchie will come out for the 2022 draft. He REALLY meshed well with Jones when Waddle got hurt. Finished with 55 catches, 916 yards and 6 TDs as a sophomore.
When I watch Mac Jones highlights, I always come away from it thinking Metchie is every bit as good as Waddle/Smith.

Have you watched Agholor? Not sure how you can come to the conclusion that he's not a deep threat after last season. He was badly misused by the Eagles, who played him as a slot receiver because of his size, even though he'd always been a deep threat in college.

His biggest problem in Philly was drops.

Agholor is a deep threat even though he may not be a #1 receiver. Then you have Meyers/Bourne as your #2 and #3 guys on the field

I think this is going to be a tight end centric offense with both Henry/Smith on the field going into motion and being moved around the field almost every snap.

If the Pats had signed Elijah Moore there is no way folk on here would have had him as anything near WR#1.
Well, he wouldn’t have been. But the team could have used another burner to operate out of the slot. For all we know, they liked him but he went at 34. I thought he would have been a very nice addition. Expanded route tree, runs crisp routes, a threat after the catch and on screens. But it is what it is. Agholor is at best a WR2 and benefitted from teams focusing on Waller and having to commit a safety deep for Ruggs. So he got a lot of one-on-one match-ups last season. It’s a very real possibility he can see the same here if teams decide to dedicate coverage to Henry, Smith, and Meyers.

I have a strange feeling that defenses will sleep on Harry and with a better qb and better passer he might take off.

I am silently optimistic. It's a well rounded team.

For all we know, cam could morph into MVP cam as everyone is doubting him and has this huge chip on his shoulder..

Why would Harry be active, never mind getting significant reps?

We have 2-3 of Agholor, Bourne, Henry, and Smith out there on almost every play. Our next off the bench is Myers. We have White (or another RB) on passing downs. That's 6 targets. That doesn't count an receiving chances for other RB's, FB, or 3rd TE.

Our punt returner will be active as our emergency receiver.

I don't think that Harry would be active unless he moves ahead of Myers on the depth chart.
