DRAFT Welcome Mac Jones

People put too much stock in athleticism and running around now. The QBs job is to throw the ball.

By all accounts Mac Jones is accurate, has a quick release and can diagnose defenses. That's perfect for the offense we run. That's the reasons we wanted Jimmy back here.
Completely agree. Brady, Manning, Roethlisberger the past few years, not mobile at all. Throwing the ball to the right places, accuracy is paramount. Yeah Mahomes & Wilson are very athletic & have strong arms. That doesn’t mean every QB who isn’t Lamar Jackson will struggle. My biggest things are, does he make good decisions? Does he make very few mistakes? Jameis Winston was a great athlete coming out of college too. He’s an INT machine

If Mac had not been there at 15, imagine how pissed this entire board would be lol. We would have traded down

But it worked out perfectly and we have the closest thing to Tommy in the draft.

Yes. Honestly who cares if a QB can run for 500 yards (30/game). Much more important to be able to slide 1 or 2 steps and get the ball out via passing.
Winning football is about getting a ton of first downs, controlling the clock, making good decisions on every single play and knowing every play what the defense has and where to go with the ball quick.

We already have a 40 yards/gm rushing QB on the roster. How did that turn out last year?

Meh.

Mac has very nice touch on the ball, but has a wet noodle for an arm. No fastball. he can’t improvise with his feet because he’s not athletic, and he is not in good physical shape. He also has had run ins with the law. That said, he throws an accurate pass.

i just don’t know. I wanted fields.

The deep ball Jones honed in the offseason devastated opposing defenses, particularly those that chose to walk up a safety to help control Alabama running back Najee Harris. Alabama receivers caught 11 touchdowns of 30 yards or more in the regular season, and while not all were thrown over the top of the defense, Jones' proclivity for connecting on deep balls was uncanny. He completed a staggering 64 percent of throws that traveled 30 or more yards in the air.

Joker's wild: Why Alabama QB Mac Jones is getting the last laugh

In order for some QBs to succeed you need to put some talent around them.
You do realize we acquired two WRs and two TEs in free agency, right? Please don't insult us and say these FAs have no talent. They're better than the guys we had last year, and that team was able to get seven wins and be competitive in most of their games.

a. What will make Jones a success or failure will not happen based on who Mack Jones is NOW. What will make him a success is what he becomes (or not). Brady had a bad body when he came into the league. He also had a mediocre arm. But over the years in the league, he improved his body, he improved his mind, and he improved every other aspect of his game as well.
So true. There's every reason to expect this guy will take advantage of the opportunities in front of him and get better.

b. Jones comes into the league with his 2 main strengths being his accuracy and his processing skills. I believe, if Bill had to rank those 2 strengths they would be the top 2 of Bills list of QB skills. So he's off to a good start.
Yep, 100%. We have exactly what BB looks for in a QB in his own words, early in his Browns days:

"#1 is to make good decisions -- then arm, size, physically tough, leadership, guys look up to and have confidence in, a real competitor," Belichick writes. "Accurate rather than guy with a cannon. Emphasis on our game will be on decision, timing, accuracy -- guy needs to be confident, intelligence is important but not as much so as field awareness & judgment. Can't be sloppy fundamentally unsound guy with ball handling, [techniques] etc."

Mac Jones ticks most if not all of those boxes, and still has room for growth.

c. You can't help but love the fact that both Smith and Waddle picked Jones over Tua when they were asked who they liked best.
Ticks the "guys look up to" box.

d. A lot has been mentioned about Jones' lack of athleticism. But here's the thing I have a hard time getting my head around. He ran a 4.8 40. Back in the day I went fairly far as a football player running a 4.8 40. Granted it was 50 years ago, but it STILL isn;t exactly slow. And while he's not going to make anyone forget Lamar Jackson, he isn't close to being Tom Brady slow.'
We'll find ways to use that speed, I am sure.

e. Being able to "escape" like a Jackson, or Allen, or Lance, is a nice, it isn't necessary to win or go far in the playoffs if you have the right team to go around him....and for at least the next few years the Pats will have an excellent running game to go along with excellent TE for the play action game, and OK WR's. They will have a superior ST's game and a top 10 defense.
He's an elite decision maker with elite accuracy. He'll get coached to do his reads and if he sees nothing get rid of the ball and live to fight another play. NFL rules mean QBs who can get rid of the ball quick rarely get injured. Running QBs are always at risk of injury. Look what happened to Dallas after Dak Prescott messed up his leg in a running play.

f. All that being said, ANY first round pick taken where the Pats picked there is just as likely to fail as succeed and that failure rate is even higher at the QB position, So I'm hoping for the best, while girding for the worst of this pick. Regardless of the relatively high pick, Jones was STILL just the 5th QB picked. Interested when you think Brady lasted until 199 and yet was just the 7th QB picked.
That's why it's amazing we didn't have to trade up to get Mac Jones. Look at what SF gave up to draft 2nd. Look at what CHI gave up to move past us. It's still amazing how many things had to go right for this to work. CAR decided to stick with Sam Freaking Darnold! Oy! DEN decided to stick with Lock and Bridgewater. Oy! Talk about doing nothing to upgrade your team. I am trying to stay grounded and remind myself that drafting is not an exact science and failures are common, but man, it feels so right. It feels as if the seas parted for us. What we've got to do is get this guy in house and get him working ASAP. Don't give him too much time to think about spending all that cash that will fall into his lap the minute he signs the contract. Keep him grinding, get him into the Patriots Way as soon as possible.

If bill wantef fields he

I wanna see them add a big bodied receiver with speed.

I really don't like tom curran anymore, been a petulant child since all the brady vs belichick stuff started 2-3 years ago

People really think the Pats draft room should be jumping around like idiots like the Lions draft room did.

Team that has been there before, many times vs a team that has been a laughing stock for decades

I always say "In Bill Belichick I Trust"
He knows a hell of a lot more than me. If I knew more than him and his team I would be on the team.

The niners will regret passing up on mac jones. I hope we see a lot more of him than sham newton. I know bill said cam’s our QB but he’s not the future of this team.

It was a bit over the top but I don't blame the Lions for being excited about Sewell, who was projected to be the number 2 pick just a couple of months ago.

Im guessing that they liked Jones more than Fields. Bill must have known a team like Chicago would try and move up to get him yet he stayed put at 15. If they had wanted fields, they would have made the move but they did not.

I’m not crazy about Curran anymore either, but he’s right. There was not a lot of enthusiasm in that draft room, but that’s how you know Bill is on his game.

I would say that they were psyched that an awesome OT who had no business sliding was their pick.

Jones also lifted some preparation tips from the Brady documentary "Tom vs. Time." He sees his own experience at Alabama not unlike Brady's at Michigan – an underappreciated backup behind a more heralded starter.
"At Michigan, they said he wasn't going to play because of Drew Henson. They said he wasn't going to play in the NFL. I like his story more than his play," Jones said. "Obviously his play is great and I model some of my game after him, with his footwork and how he prepares, but he had a chip on his shoulder, the same one I have."
Wonder if he'll go around naming all the QBs that got picked before him, just like TFB did. He's got that "disrespected" chip on his shoulder, just like Rodgers and Brady do.

I don’t see Cam being the backup to Jones if Jones should beat Newton out for the job. So, there might still be a role for Stidham as backup. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
Cam is easy to cut, one year contract so no hangover to next year. He also gets a $700k per-game roster bonus. If he doesn't play, it'll make financial sense to cut him. I don't know if he gets the bonus if he's on the 53 man list but not the 45 man game day roster.

Well hopefully Mac is the right pick. Not the guy I wanted and a few immature incidents in the past.

But, he’s here. Clean slate as they say. They say he’s a real brainiac. I worry he’s a product of an incredibly stacked team. Haven’t had a good Bama QB in the pros in a long time.

I think Tua and Mac will be bust, but hopefully I’ll be wrong on Mac (sorry Tua lol). Cool dynamic Tua and Mac will get to play twice a year.
One DUI in '19, and it seems it made him decide to give up partying. Not a big concern.

Why be concerned he did well on a stacked team? It still was him making the reads, deciding who to throw to, putting the ball where it needed to be. Stuff that's easy to see on tape. If we can win 7 with Cam throwing the ball into the ground, we should be OK with a guy like Mac.

Jones' playtime this year will not be determined by his own performance but by what Cam is able to do with his second shot. And I hope the fans and media folks will be able to realize this instead of handing out bust labels if he ends up as the backup behind Cam after camp.
Just block out the mediots! If this draft showed anything, it shows they are IRRELEVANT. Felger stayed up late last night to say BB got "horny" for quarterbacks and that's why he picked Mac. Man, no one should spend any time worrying over what mediots like Felger spew.

If camp shows thay Cam is toast then Jones will be able to throw to a very QB friendly collection of talent.

We are set up nicely either way.
The transition to Jones could be quick or it could be slow, but it is inevitable, and we're set up for pretty much any scenario you could anticipate.

Maybe Cam shows up healthier, knows the system better, shows better accuracy, gives us time to bring Jones along slowly.

Maybe Jones takes to our system like a duck to water, blows past Cam on the depth chart, we cut Cam and go with Stid as backup and take our chances that it will all turn out OK.

Maybe it's a mix of both, we go a few games and it's clear to everyone that Cam is done, BB has a nice meeting with him and says it's time to take a seat, if Cam objects too much, he gets cut and the king is dead, long live the new king.

BB has managed difficult personalities before, like Randy Moss. He'll be praising them to the hills, like last night saying Cam is still QB #1, right up till he decides he's done with them, then they'll get cut so quick they won't know what hit them.

Again, Cam's contract was constructed specifically so he's easy to cut. That's the first thing everyone said the day the contract was announced. He either does his part to help the team as a whole, or he gets cut. Simples.

I respect the lack of emotion from our guys. You just drafted a kid out of college who hasn't done anything in the pros. Most first rounders don't pan out. Once you see him making game winning plays then you celebrate.
