Jones also lifted some preparation tips from the Brady documentary "Tom vs. Time." He sees his own experience at Alabama not unlike Brady's at Michigan – an underappreciated backup behind a more heralded starter.
"At Michigan, they said he wasn't going to play because of Drew Henson. They said he wasn't going to play in the NFL. I like his story more than his play," Jones said. "Obviously his play is great and I model some of my game after him, with his footwork and how he prepares, but he had a chip on his shoulder, the same one I have."
Wonder if he'll go around naming all the QBs that got picked before him, just like TFB did. He's got that "disrespected" chip on his shoulder, just like Rodgers and Brady do.
I don’t see Cam being the backup to Jones if Jones should beat Newton out for the job. So, there might still be a role for Stidham as backup. It will be interesting to see how it all unfolds.
Cam is easy to cut, one year contract so no hangover to next year. He also gets a $700k per-game roster bonus. If he doesn't play, it'll make financial sense to cut him. I don't know if he gets the bonus if he's on the 53 man list but not the 45 man game day roster.
Well hopefully Mac is the right pick. Not the guy I wanted and a few immature incidents in the past.
But, he’s here. Clean slate as they say. They say he’s a real brainiac. I worry he’s a product of an incredibly stacked team. Haven’t had a good Bama QB in the pros in a long time.
I think Tua and Mac will be bust, but hopefully I’ll be wrong on Mac (sorry Tua lol). Cool dynamic Tua and Mac will get to play twice a year.
One DUI in '19, and it seems it made him decide to give up partying. Not a big concern.
Why be concerned he did well on a stacked team? It still was him making the reads, deciding who to throw to, putting the ball where it needed to be. Stuff that's easy to see on tape. If we can win 7 with Cam throwing the ball into the ground, we should be OK with a guy like Mac.
Jones' playtime this year will not be determined by his own performance but by what Cam is able to do with his second shot. And I hope the fans and media folks will be able to realize this instead of handing out bust labels if he ends up as the backup behind Cam after camp.
Just block out the mediots! If this draft showed anything, it shows they are IRRELEVANT. Felger stayed up late last night to say BB got "horny" for quarterbacks and that's why he picked Mac. Man, no one should spend any time worrying over what mediots like Felger spew.
If camp shows thay Cam is toast then Jones will be able to throw to a very QB friendly collection of talent.
We are set up nicely either way.
The transition to Jones could be quick or it could be slow, but it is inevitable, and we're set up for pretty much any scenario you could anticipate.
Maybe Cam shows up healthier, knows the system better, shows better accuracy, gives us time to bring Jones along slowly.
Maybe Jones takes to our system like a duck to water, blows past Cam on the depth chart, we cut Cam and go with Stid as backup and take our chances that it will all turn out OK.
Maybe it's a mix of both, we go a few games and it's clear to everyone that Cam is done, BB has a nice meeting with him and says it's time to take a seat, if Cam objects too much, he gets cut and the king is dead, long live the new king.
BB has managed difficult personalities before, like Randy Moss. He'll be praising them to the hills, like last night saying Cam is still QB #1, right up till he decides he's done with them, then they'll get cut so quick they won't know what hit them.
Again, Cam's contract was constructed specifically so he's easy to cut. That's the first thing everyone said the day the contract was announced. He either does his part to help the team as a whole, or he gets cut. Simples.
