Deshaun Watson accused of sexual assault in lawsuit

To think for 100K all of this could have gone away, I think he may have screwed himself biggly here. Whoever gave him the advice not to pay has helped put the nailed in the coffin. He dug the hole.

Not saying that isn't true, but what source said the woman was asking silently for a 100K?

I ask because I hadn't seen that. Was there ever an attempt to quietly settle without making the matter public? If so I find the initial accuser a lot less credible.

Do you think these sponsors are dropping because the public perception is getting worse or because it's looking more and more like he is guilty?

I know that ultimately sponsors only care about public perception and not actual guilt.

My question is more does the sponsors dropping indicate a guilty settlement coming and the sponsors are dropping before that comes, or is the current perception too negative to wait it out anymore?

Public image. Sponsors don’t want to be viewed as endorsing someone who doesn’t “reflect their values” (which is corporate speak for “he’s making us look bad by association and it’s not worth risking our bottom line”). The optics of the situation became too bad to ignore once a public face was put to one of the alleged victims, and the sponsors made their moves.

I remember a few years back when Cam Newton got in trouble for laughing at a female reporter during a press conference for asking him about receiver routes. Dannon didn’t waste any time removing him as their spokesman for their Oikos brand of yogurts and replaced him with Dak Prescott.


It’s case by case, and not automatic, and will often time depends on who it is. Tiger Woods had that whole adultery thing made public back in 2009 and as a result he lost sponsorships from Gatorade and Gillette, among others, but Nike stayed loyal and still has him to this day.

It was a settlement offer, likely an opening number that could have been brought down. Instead of responding in a manner Buzzbee was comfortable with, Watson's side responded in a way that did not sit well with Buzzbee. So now we have the **** show.

Florio, who seems to specialize in getting damn near everything wrong, actually got this right. It's shocking, but true. He's actually put out an article train that has some interesting notions in it. Frankly, I'm starting to wonder if he having someone ghost write his work. The rest of the links are follow up stuff and, assuming that there's at least some level of validity to the issues broached in them, lend themselves to the notion that Watson should really have taken that settlement offer more seriously.

Right, and Florio reports $100k was the opening bid, the final result was likely to be in the $50k-$75k range.

We also now know Watson's lawyers were willing to position this as a learning experience for their high profile athlete.

Same kind of stuff Rapistburger's lawyers came up with, IIRC.

It seems to me that what he is trying to do is get some cases summarily dismissed based on having the judge require the plaintiffs to identify themselves. Presumably, some might refuse. I'd say that's not a bad strategy at this point.

Well, I mean, the man does have the right to formulate a defense and a large part of that is knowing who his accusers are.

he knows who they are and if he doesn't remember a couple of them he can always check who he has dm'd and the dates the girls say it happened.

Yeah, but it doesn't exactly work that way in a court of law. They are going to have to show up at some point (if this goes all the way, which I doubt it will)

I think it may have been a good strategy a few days ago.

It may have made some of the accusers drop out and cast doubt with the rest.

After the first one went public I think the rest will be less fearful than they would have been a few days ago.

It seems we're past the tipping point now.

Like I said yesterday.... not a bad strategy at this point.

Before Florio was a football guy he was a lawyer, so he sometimes gets the legal stuff right. Then... before he was a lawyer, he was an engineering major, so he grasped the stupidity of the deflategate allegations and got that right.

I trust his legal analysis more than his game prognostications, trade ideas, or draft ideas.

Yikes, Not looking good for watson. When you have to move to "well the sex was consensual" defense it pretty much admits that these accusations are true.
