Path cleared for Jimmy's return? [SF trades for #3 pick]

He thinks Brady is mediocre too, so there's that.

Did you read Simms write up? He thinks Wilson's lowest expectations is Mahommes or Rodgers level. So Simms think that Wilson's worst case scenario would be him being a Hall of Fame QB which means he expects Wilson to be either the best or one of the two or three best QBs of all time.

It's kind of funny too we talk about Jimmy being 30. Granted he hasn't been durable but the guy in tampa is 43 and the guy in green bay will be 39

He also sat most of his first 3 years and overall has played maybe 2 seasons worth of games thus far if that. If he ever shakes the injury bug he could easily play to 40 imo. BIG if though

Simms is a joke.

His arm talent is off the charts.
Need to invest in defense to combat that.

My gut feeling is we would have never signed Cam if Bill thought Jimmy was a possibility.

I'm not sure. We've heard how players around the league talk about Cam, and I'm not saying he's THE reason free agents came here (obviously money is king), but having a QB that other players respect and view as a starter (regardless of whether he should be, that's how he's perceived), was necessary for free agent pitches. It's also a "floor" signing, where Belichick knows he can upgrade but also knows if every other option (Jimmy, draft, etc) falls through he's at least no worse at the position than last year. I'm not sure signing Cam said anything about the possibility of Jimmy specifically.

I am not a huge Garoppolo fan. I have real questions about his durability and his toughness. I am convinced that Brady would have played through that injury that sidelined Garoppolo during Brady's suspension. I think most great QBs would have.

That said, with the way the draft is shaping up, he might be the Pats' best option at least short term. I would say trade for Darnold, but I don't see that realistically happening. Maybe take a risk on trading for Mariota in hopes he can have a Ryan Tannehill turnaround of his career, but that is a big gamble.

I still have questions on whether the 49ers will trade or cut Garoppolo. Unless Wilson falls to three or the 49ers are in love with Mac Jones, they will need a veteran starter this year. I don't see Fields or Lance starting in 2021. They were one missed pass by Garoppolo to Sanders from potentially winning a Super Bowl just one season ago. So they might think they can compete for a Super Bowl this year and then start their new QB in 2022.

Miami may be jumping back up to take Penei Sewell. We can't assume they're going for a QB. All 4 top QBs may be gone by #6.
It’s either whichever OL cincy passes on between Sewell or Slater or Wr. Depending on what Atlanta does Miami could have their pick of wrs to choose from. I don’t see the bengals going that route.

I wonder how much Bill/Krafts age plays into what they do. Bill is near 70 and Kraft is near 80. This roster is built to win now(on paper). just missing a QB. Its clear after 2 decades of winning (more if you count the bledsoe years) being 7-9 didnt sit well with Bill/Kraft. I never thought Bill wanted a long rebuild which is why this offseason didn't shock me. Brady shot the first shot across the bow by winning a super bowl with Tampa. no matter what they say, that had to sting Bill/Kraft.

Do they think Jimmy G could be that guy? or do they want to roll the dice on trading up and battling 10 teams for 5-6 QBs? this is one of the most fascinating off-seasons in patriots history.

Imagine the storyline next year if Jimmy G. comes back. Bill trying to prove the NFL that he was right all along about Jimmy G being bradys heir apparent. the Tampa game might be the highest rated game of the season. Brady coming in to face the guy who let him walk out the door and the guy Bill essentially wanted to replace him all along
You just know that if we get Jimmy we’ll somehow find ourselves in the Super Bowl against Brady. That storyline is going to have some major culmination that’s not just a regular season game.

There are a lot of guys who's arm talent was off the charts who came into the NFL and became average QBs. To say that his baseline is being one of the top two QBs in the league right now is silly.

Andrew Luck was predicted to be a generational QB and he never was one of the top two QBs in the league during the time he played. I don't think he was ever as good as Rodgers or Mahomes. He was a great QB for most of his time in the league, but never that level.

Cam isn’t making anywhere near starter money..BB knows what he’s doing.
Bill also loves Cam. And the players do too.
No way Cam stays as a back up to Jimmy.

Shanahan:

Constructs offense around running the ball & YAC. Angry that offense isn’t conductive to coming from behind or passing out of shotgun.

McGlinchey - great run blocker, mediocre pass blocker
Tomlinson - great run blocker, mediocre pass blocker
Richburg 2019, Mack present - ditto

Pass catchers during Jimmy G’s 49ers tenure:

2017 - Kittle, Goodwin, Garcon, Taylor
2018 - Kittle, Bourne, Garcon, Pettis
2019 - Kittle, Bourne, Samuel (rookie), Sanders (midseason)
2020 - Kittle, Samuel, Aiyuk (rookie), Bourne

Not sure how you are suppose to light it up through the air. Jimmy G was still top 5-10 in passer rating, comp pct, YPA & most advanced metrics.

49ers w/ Jimmy G: 22-8
49ers without Jimmy G: 7-27

Besides the injury concerns I don’t understand how a fan wouldn’t want him considering he’s led top 10 offenses with arguably worse weapons than the pats & won at a high level.

The only plus side to Jimmy's injury history is, ironically, his down time. It's not a direct comp since it's a different sport, but I remember similar things said about Carlton Fisk before he went to Chicago. Fish then played into his 40's. Who knows... Brady's down year in 2008 may have helped contribute to his longevity.

You never know. :)

How does Jimmy win but Ryan lose? They were in the same position in the Super Bowl, and both of them choked.

Ryan makes better throws.
Ryan’s career has plenty of clunkers, 2013 / 2014 / the last three seasons.

Jimmy is 24-8.

I’ll agree that staying on the field has been a huge issue for JG, but when he is playing, his team is winning. Not always so for Ryan.

There's a reason the Falcons have never won a Super Bowl, and it's not only Ryan.

One could also make the case that Mahomes and Rodgers are the 2 most gifted QBs to ever see the field. They are on Jeff George's level.

So? Exactly what leverage does Cam have? Also, this is a business. You must’ve forgot who the coach is..
This isn't about leverage. You did you listen to Bill last year? He loves Cam. He does not see Cam the way we do. He sees him as a viable, cheap bridge guy. He didn't bring him back with the notion that he would just release him for another bridge guy. My feeling is the Niners told Bill we are not getting rid of Jimmy this year so he signed Cam. It has nothing to do with FA. If it was about Cam being some lure for FAs, we would not have spent a zillion dollars on day one.
