I'm biased because I'm happy about the outcome of the play, but I don't think throwing the ball in that situation was a bad idea. The type of pass play that Seattle ran can be criticized, but not passing in and of itself. That was a "Either my guy catches it, or it's incomplete" situation and Seattle ran a play where, if the defense recognizes it, they'll also be able to make a play on the ball.

There are two other "passes" that I want to mention from this game: One is that 100% of the blame for Butler's INT goes on Pete Carroll and the offensive coordinator. No one knocks Russell Wilson for throwing away a Super Bowl. Brady gets mocked for losing to Nick Foles and Manning gets criticized for his pick 6 against the Saints, but Wilson escapes any blame for cementing a Super Bowl loss by throwing an interception.

The other pass is Seattle as a team receiving no criticism for starting a fight at the end of the game because they were mad they lost. You never hear that they were poor sports, classless, disgraceful, setting a bad example, etc. It's all just forgotten.

I have it as my #1 too. Probably the best matchup sb matchup we had seen in a long time. Both teams were kings of their conference from rather early on in the season and a rare season where if you were to pick the sb showdown mid season thats what it actually ended up being. And for all the hype, the game somehow surpassed it.

Its insane how close every game has been between these teams dating all the way back to 1992. Only the 2004 game was won by double digits and that was a 3 point game until a late circus catch by bethel johnson and dillon scored with 2 minutes left.

People forget that it took a massive choke by the packers for the seabags to be in the super bowl. That seahawks defense was legit though. Number 1 that year.

The 2014 Seahawks weren't just opponents, they were villains. Really they were the best villains of the Patriots Super Bowl era. Lots of people who were ordinarily Pats haters rooted for the Seahawks to lose that game because they were already sick of their trash talking, cheap shots and general BS. It was kind of funny. Of course the Pats went on to win 2 more titles haha.

The thing was, they really were that good though. They were the defending Super Bowl champs, they HUMILIATED Peyton Manning the year before, they went up against the greatest statistical offense in league history and curb stomped them. Beating them in heartbreaking fashion at the last second was the best. 51 was a greater achievement, but 49 was a better game start to finish and the craziest adrenaline rush at the end.

Best postgame line: "Pete Carroll finally won a title for New England"

Seasquawks were the most formidable of the NEPs SB wins.

The three we lost were obviously formidable because....well, we lost.

Kind of, but 2011 and 2017 were both seriously flawed Pats teams with horribly soft defenses (#31 and #29 in total defense) that lost to... decent... opponents.

2007 was the outlier obviously. That Giants team was genuinely loaded with talent and just kind of... dumb and sloppy... until they got their act together in the playoffs at the last minute. The same Giants team in 2008 did the reverse and started hot and kind of turned into garbage at the end.

The defense that the Pats put out there was designed to stop the run. It was the first time they had used that particular personnel grouping and formation all year, per "Do Your Job". The Pats basically dared the Hawks to pass. Butler made an unbelievable play.

A while back I had spent several hours going through Seahawks play-by-play game logs to see when the Seahawks last scored on that play, prompting the Pats to prepare for it the week of the SB. I found it:

Sometime around week 15 of the 2013 season.

Over a freaking year prior.

Exhibit A in how BB leaves no stone unturned.

Beastmode was 1 for 5 from the 1-yard line during the 2014 season, so it was logical to consider the pass play in that situation.

Still one of the greatest sports moments of my life. Remember being about 20 nascar sodas in, my buddy was ahead of me lol. It took him about 5 seconds after the play to realize what had happened. Amazing night

I was like “why are they all jumping in a pile?” But I might be a little slow.

Idk why but i felt like cris collinsworth wanted to cry when wilson threw that interception. He was the most disappointed person of all. His reaction was priceless.

It was embarrassing. When he finally figured out who Butler was, gave him credit in passing. After 5 minutes of ranting about a play call that was not that bad at all. Butler’s play was out of this world, especially for who he was. The greatest play in SB history - and it ain’t close.

I was at Beau Rivage in Biloxi. My dad came up from Florida with his free passes to the "VIP" SB party. Low-end VIP, but free drinks and some pretty decent food.

Lots of Seattle fans, all going wild at the end. Until the play, that is.

This singular play literally changed the entire legacy of Brady and the Patriots because if they score not only does the dynasty fall to 3-3 in the Super Bowl but I don’t know if they could ever bounce back from yet another last minute choke job. It’d be a Buffalo Bills level mental barrier. And then add on the deflate gate stuff after the loss and who knows if Brady’s reputation is salvageable in the eyes of the league. It’s frankly probably the most pivotal play in NFL history because you could argue it’s the difference between 3 and 6+1 Super Bowl victories.
