GM LOUNGE

Glad NT is being discussed here as I think a big space eater would do wonders for our defense. You add a big, run stuffing DT and add a pass
rushing LB or DE and bring back Guy, Butler, HT and Chung along with some of our young guys who hopefully improve( Uche, Dugger, Jennings, Wino) and our defense has the potential to be really good. Our secondary is already very good.

I guess from the QB's that you list, I ruled out most trades. Our roster isn't ready to trade 3 1st rounders for Watson/Wilson. Garroppollo isn't durable enough to trade for his contract.

Of the guys that you can just sign and pay: Fitzpatrick, Winston, Trubisky.

I wouldn't mind the trade route if the contract is OK and the compensation is a day 3 pick, like Mariota.

Strategy: man the position while retaining your draft capital.

Surprisingly decent media conversation on NE QB situation

Broncos WRs

Patrick 68.9% catch rate 111.4 rating
Jeudy 47.3% catch rate 60.3 rating
Hamler 55.6% catch rate 73.1 rating
Hamilton 54.8% catch rate 62.9 rating

Patrick was awesome with mediocre QB play. He had 742 yards on only 74 targets & was impressive vs. the pats. Considering the Broncos have invested heavily in Jeudy, Sutton, Hamler & Fant they may be open to trading him for a mid round pick if he’s tendered as an RFA. I think he’d make a pretty good WR on the outside.

Currently the league has half less to spend in FA then last yr - which is insane.
The numbers will change with plenty of cap moves but the difference will remain significant.
Consequently the list of strong FA options will be growing.. and the prices for middle class/older players falling..

I think bb signs a bunch of released guys and very few higher priced free agents.

Normally id agree but this roster needs proven vets entering their prime not exiting. For sure he will take opportunity of what is expected to be big, quality and cheap pool of released players over 30. There will also be a decent pool of mid-price solid young vets to take advantage of on longer deals..

I don't know who allowed something so reasonable to happen on an ESPN branded program but I am sure that person has already been fired. Good stuff.

No on White and McCourtey, both good, important, long time Patriots but prefer to run Michel and Harris. If Taylor can help, fine but I would rather see backs that are more run/pass threats. They will find another back somewhere or Burkhead may return (for awhile). Never been as big a McCourtey fan as some. Would really like to keep Thuney but it's probably best to draft another tackle and move Onwenu inside. I like K.J.Wright but he's 31. There are several decent LB's that are going to be free agents and would like to see what they would cost. GB releasing Kirksey, Brown from Titans, Judon, Ravens. Would like Brate and Reddick.

Where is this talk of Brate coming from? Is Tampa releasing or trading him?

I know there's no dead money in releasing him from this point forward, but he's got a very nice contract for Tampa through 2023.

They probably have to do something with one of their tight ends. The "three-headed monster" never happened, because Brate was playing single-digit snaps per game and had a total of one catch before Howard got hurt. With how many important free agents they want to re-sign, it's poor allocation of resources to pay $6M for a true backup that has a minimal role until somebody gets hurt.

(Technically Gronk did say he will be open-minded in free agency, but it's widely assumed that he's back in TB.)

Will Howard be the same after his Achilles injury?

So does that mean that there is actually only $350 million of cap space ($600 million of space for those under minus the $250 that needs to be cleared for those over)? That's about 1/3 of the the $1.2 billion last year, not 1/2.:eek:

Cannon is a huge surprise. He was apparently close to retiring a couple times last offseason before opting out. Wouldn't be shocked if he still does at some point before camp or very early on in camp. Hell, he might even just be released at some point given he only has like 2.6m in dead money on his deal.

That being said Wynn-Owenwu-Andrews(?)-Mason-Cannon looks like a pretty good line to me. Especially in the run game.

Happy Chung and HT are giving it a try, especially HT.. he should still have some gas left and is the heart and soul of the front 7.

1.2B was at the START of FA. All teams have to be under the cap at the start this year - so the number will be at least 600M.
The cap could still rise a few $M = c. 50-100M
Don't know if Franchise Tags were incl. in 1.2B.

In any case deflation of $ and inflation of talent on the market puts buyers in great situation.

But if there are $250 million in cuts at the same time the market math changes.

I'm genuinely curious how Belichick approaches this offseason. Will it have one of his rare bursts of GM aggression like 2007 and 2014 to turn around from a down season ASAP, or is it just going to be fairly plodding with a bunch of bargain bin guys and trading back in the draft?

I confess to being terrible at predicting Belichick's moves, good or bad.

I say he goes bargain shopping again as there's too many needs. He needs to do something he has done well in some time and that's land some big time talent other than O-line in the draft.

Read it in one of the many speculative articles.
