Mahomes' media love for incomplete passes

After talking up GOAT Mahomes for 2 seasons, the fake sports news must salvage what remains of the little credibility they had left.

Excuses - OL injuries, Covid restrictions, Bucs home game, Pats sore big toe, it was the WRs fault, Referees didnt want Chiefs to win, Andy was thinking about his loser Son.

The 2021 KC Chefs Super Bowl 3peat has begun. Nobody else will get better and KC has Mahomes. Get the champagne ready.

I disagree with virtually everything here.

It doesn't go both ways. He had 120 yards, with 0-1 TD/INT before the 4th quarter, before he build up the garbage stats. Those are almost the identical stats he had last year before the 4th. 145 yards, 17-27 0-1 TD/INT. Then he threw another pick, but Shanahan and Jimmy G completely bottled the game. The Chiefs and Mahomes were just as outmatched as they were on Sunday. No QB in history apart from Rodgers would have people defending these performances. And what does those two have in common? Those are the two contemporaries of Brady that people are DESPERATE to make them surpass him. People may have a short memory but before the Packers Pats game 3 years ago, the NFL called Michael Jordan to make an intro where the game was billed who's the GOAT, and the winner would somehow be it. A regular season game. Of course, when Brady easily outplayed him, it was forgotten as soon as it finished. If the Packers won, it would have been a bigger win than Brady's 5 SB's until that point.

His QBR in both his SB appearances is worse than every Brady SB appearance except SB 53. He has 2 TD's/4 INT in 2 games. Brady has 6 INT in 10 games.

No one needs to attack Mahomes' to ''show he will never be Brady''. His awful play in both Super Bowl's is doing a fine work by itself.

Mahomes was ranked 4th by PFF, 3rd by NFL.com panel at the end of the season QB ranking. He was behind Rodgers and Brady in both, and he got dusted by Brady in the SB. So yes, being the best player in the league is certainly in dispute. He's not better than Rodgers and Brady. You could prefer him based on age, but at the end of the day, a 43 year old Brady, in a new team, had a similar statistical season to a 25 year old Mahomes, and went on to win the SB. Like he always does.

You just gave a perfect reason why stats in football mean nothing. Mahomes was under pressure all game. I didn't say he played great. I said he played far better than his stats indicated. The Bucs defense was in the backfield faster than he drop back and his receivers were blanketed. A lesser QB could have been sacked a dozen times in that game.

And anyone using PFF as an indicator is losing an argument. We on this board have been mocking their analysis for a decade now.

You ask any unbiased person today who the best player in the NFL is and they will say Mahomes and it isn't even close.

Brady played really well this year, but if you think he played better than Mahomes did this year, you didn't actually watch either play. Brady played far better in the Super Bowl (and you can make the argument that without Tampa's defense playing lights out in the playoffs, Brady wouldn't have made it the Super Bowl), but for the year, Mahomes was far better. And yes, their passing yard and TD were similar but you forget that Mahomes is a threat on the ground too. You factor in Mahomes' 308 rushing yards and things are different.

Brady is 43 years old. Why is it so hard to accept that Mahomes is a better player than him. Even people all year who said that Brady hasn't lost a step admitted that Mahomes played better than Brady and only Mahomes and Rodgers were elite this year.

Brady is the GOAT. That debate is over. And because he's playing into his mid-40's, he's the GOAT in a way that will be even harder for anyone to catch. It's got to be daunting for someone like Mahomes to realize he's going to have to win every third SB for the next 20 years to even be in the conversation, if that's his goal.

Brady still wins with his head and a + arm. It's amazing. Time-defying. He sees it, reads it, beats it.

Okay, now quit worrying about the hot takes. No matter how you want to slice it, that throw by Mahomes was inhuman, superhuman. You can't do that! The play before it, where he was spun around and launched tot he corner of the end-zone, reminded me of Russell Wilson. Physically gifted, sure. But the 29-yard horizontal throw just is unbelievable.

Physically, Mahomes is doing things we've never seen before, and it's fun as hell to watch. That doesn't make him the GOAT. Jackie Bradley Jr. made a play I'd have never thought possible when I was at Fenway years ago. He leaped right into the left-center wall, where the Green Monster drops, made an incredible catch, AND bounced off perfectly, in balance, and let fly as he landed, a perfect one-hopper to cut down the runner at first who was rushing to get back to the bag.

Unbelievable. A joy to watch.

Bradley can also throw the ball over the center field triangle at Fenway from the batter's box.

He physically does things that seem superhuman.

He's not the GOAT - not even sure the Sox will keep him in FA.

GOAT is settled in the NFL. It's Brady. He's got more rings than any NFL franchise, and mosr SB MVP's than any player has rings other than Charles Haley. He's had THREE HoF careers.

Most of us will likely be long dead before anyone seriously challenges Brady's status.

Okay? It's settled. Everyone knows it's settled. The NFL is a business and Brady won't be around much longer. And when he's gone, they need "faces" to rise to the top. Mahomes will be primary in that group right now.

And he's fun as hell to watch.

Although I think Mahomes is the most talented player and best player in the NFL right now, I seriously doubt he will ever be even close to GOAT.

First I don't think he will ever come close replicate the post season success of Brady ever. It isn't all him. He probably won't take the discounts Brady did (which shouldn't be a knock on him and only a plus on Brady's side because players should be paid what they deserve). So the Chiefs will have a harder time putting talent around him year after year. And Mahomes has yet to show he can elevate average and mediocre talent like Brady did for several seasons when the talent was lacking. And I still don't trust Andy Reid.

I also don't think he will be in the league as long or play at as such a high level for nearly as long. He is super talented and athletic, but his skill set declines earlier and faster with age than Brady's or many other QBs. He will definitely have to revise his game in his mid-30s to even think about playing at a high level into his late 30s or mid-30s.

I realize this is a very slow part of the offseason, but it seems as if some are twisting themselves like a pretzel in an attempt to find something to b!tch and moan about.

The first sunday after the Super Bowl is always such a blah day...

I think people are underestimating just how well that Tampa defense played in the Super Bowl. They had the benefit of a messed up KC O-Line, but they negated Hill, got in Kelce's head, and had pressure on seemingly every play, with barely ANY flags. They played fast, hard, and DISCIPLINED, which is a line that is extremely hard to walk.

I'm sure Mahomes, like every QB that loses a game, can look back and see a myriad of things he should have done, or could have done, or must do better. But to me you start by giving credit to the unit that wins, and if that is hard to do, you start to put blame on the team that loses. We're too quick to say, "This team lost the game" rather than "The other team WON the game."

Give Bowles and that defense credit.

Even right now, today, if I needed to win one game to save my life, I would take Brady at 43 years old over anyone (especially if BB was my coach).

If you feel like the praise for Mahomes was over the top you clearly don't remember the media ball washing of Manning and Favre when each of them threw six picks against the Chargers and Rams respectively and Favre's was in the playoffs. The calls for how courageous they were to still be chucking at 3, 4, 5...give me a break.

He played an impressive game, IMO, when considering the defense he was playing against.

Not even remotely impressive. His failures were flashy, but so what? They were still failures. Far too many people are falling for the laser pointer.

Or, to use another example:

Mahomes was the hibachi chef who can flip shrimp into his hat every time, but burned the rice a little, overcooked the meats a little, screwed up the shrimp appetizer, and got a good review because people really liked the way he twirled the salt and pepper shakers.

You sort of see it in golf where a great ballstriker who always loses to the great player is regarded as more talented or being 'better'.

Why are you repeatedly exposing yourself to something that's making you sick?
I'd suggest that when something is making you sick is to avoid it. Certainly not to pursue it.

you mean all sports media? Hmmmm. Not quite that easy.

I guess we can disagree on what’s fun to watch.

I guess it’s not fun to notice that Vea is lined up outside and will bullrush your LT. And to call your TE to go to other side to chip in to help to buy you a few seconds. And to notice that the safeties are leaning a bit to the stacked receivers and that the underneath RB wheel route will be open for. 10-12 yard gain after you fake the safeties away with your eyes.
And Brady is deemed boring. And defense is blamed for not getting pressure on Brady. And OLine is praised for giving him time. And defense is blamed for not covering underneath route and leaning to stacked WRs. And Brady gets no credit.

It’s so much more fun to expect your stacked WR combo to beat the safeties with speed, and for the TE to give you a second read as well. And to hope your protection holds up, and to look at the underneath/checkdown route as an insult. And the protection breaks immediately and you scramble for your life for 15 seconds and the WRs run all the way across the field and you hurl it as a mini Hail Mary in a show of superhuman strength and the ball either hits your player (genius!!) or is intercepted (like by Devin White at end / had no option). And in both cases Mahomes looks like a fighter and a star and has grit. And he’s fighting. And his OLing let him down. And his WRs couldn’t get open. And he has superhuman prowess and ability. And he deserves all the praise.

What’s more fun?

NFL offenses aren’t designed to have six second routes from wide receivers.

So when Mahomes says postgame that the receivers weren’t always running the routes he expected, I’m sure it’s because they weren’t.

A lot of these drops were on pop-up, fluttering passes with no velocity to receivers running around in an improvisational attempt to get open. This happened to begin the game with a pass hitting Tyreek Hill’s helmet. Should he have caught it? Probably. Has he ever run that route and caught that type of pass in a game? I haven’t seen it. It was a strange, slow moving duck ball about 35 yards downfield to a covered Hill, who had also become entangled in Kelce’s route. Almost like a underhanded throw that’s a “jump ball”...and Mahomes threw a lot of those.

What do scouts say about some NFL prospects and why they won’t be successful in the pros? They say it’s because their college system was less structured and relied on athleticism, improvisation, and long tosses. Tebow can scramble around for five seconds, find a favorable matchup, and toss the ball within five yards of the guy. In the NFL, that stuff all breaks down and those types of plays are flukey, not a real strategy.

Mahomes‘s passes were not thrown right to a spot..they were fluttered into an area. Of course the receivers adjusted and could make a play on it. That isn’t precision or accuracy though.

We are the most thin skinned fanbase there is.

I disagree. This is more a response to the media and chiefsplanet. If you want thin skinned then go on GB's or KC's forums. Nothing but excuses and complaining. This is more an exercise in calling out their BS with just about 25% of being thin skinned about how too much praise too soon was put on Mahomes.

Am I the only one sick of all this adulation about Mahomes' play in the Superbowl and how he was the only one fighting and so much ooohing and aaaahing about 2 incomplete passes. For god sake, there have been tons of crazier and more meaningful incomplete passes in history. Passes that would changed Championships, not narrow the lead on a 31-9 blowout.

Do you remember anyone oohing and aahing with 19 seconds left and down 14-17 in SB 42, Brady hit Moss on the money for a 70 yard hike that would have given us 19-0

Do you remember anyone ooohing and aaahing that Brady delivered to Amendola perfectly up 17-15 in SB 46 at 20 yard line, with 4 min left.

Can we stop talking about Mahomes' frickin incomplete passes................... it's an incomplete pass for god sake. And it was in a blowout. The outcome still wouldn't have changed.

The attempted pass from Brady to Moss in SB 42 was not really even close.

Yes Tampa d played great but why were Chiefs not adjusting. We’ve seen time and again Brady go to a heavy set, get 2 TEs to chip in with help or stay in and block, whenever he was getting too much pressure. And then make the reads.

Mahomes seemed to keep hoping something will change.

The attempted p[ass from Brady to Moss in SB 42 was not really even close.

It hit Moss in the hands and was batted away. The pass was perfect and Moss was in stride and in position. The corner made a great play.

Not sure what you mean by “not even close”

Both Moss & the Receiver should've had BOTH of those feckin passes...No feckin excuses.

Peter King (yes, really) is gently pointing this out, in his Peter King sort of way.

I think the numbers are stark: In 16 drives over two Super Bowls—six last year through 51 minutes, 10 this year through 60 minutes—the Chiefs scored one touchdown. Lots of ifs and buts in life and in football, but with some of the trouble KC had scoring down the stretch this year, and with those 111 shaky Super Bowl offensive minutes, I’ll hold off on the Chiefs-as-next-dynasty talk.
