When I first saw the headline I interpreted it to mean that Brees was planning on returning to play in 2021. The columnist says that is not the case, but rather a way to help the franchise dig out of their salary cap situation.

Brees original contract had a $36.15 million salary cap charge if he was on the team and a $22.65 million cap charge if he retired.
By bringing his salary down to the minimum the Saints will be able to hold his salary cap charge at $12.225 million while Brees ultimately decides his own future. If he retires the Saints can then hold him on the roster until June 1 and then place him on the retired list on June 2nd, allowing them to split his $22.65 million in dead money across two years- $11.15 million in 2021 and $11.5 million in 2022.
The Saints are currently estimated to be about $78 million over the salary cap with plenty of cuts and restructures to go.

For 2021 the Saints have 13 players with cap hits over $10m totaling ~$165m.

Thats 94% of the 2021 cap for 13 players.

I don't think i've ever seen a cap situation that bad before.

It would be interesting to see what the dead money for those 13 players would be. I suppose they can extend most of them but that will just turn one problem into years worth.

Brees is done

I think he could play at a fairly high level next year until he breaks down again, so it's time.

First ballot HoF

That's crazy. Guess Brady was smart to pick the Bucs. They can probably win that division until Brady retires with Saints in cap hell and no QB succession plan.

~$120m. I rounded up/down

Insane.

Bucs have a **** ton of FAs but should also have a decent amount of cap space to sign maybe 1 or 2 of the quality ones.

They should be favorites next year for the division assuming they bring back some key players.

aaaannndd Bucs have the benefit of the GOAT who brings you rings on your finger, so there are for sure some of the FA (which have had already at least one contract extantion) will be willing to take less for the chance to play with Brady and win a ring or two

The Bucs are in terrific shape. They are about $25M under the cap right now. They have Godwin, AB, Fournette, Gronk, Barrett, David, Suh as major FAs.

Fournette is a RB and they should let him walk.
Suh is probably unnecessary unless discounted.
They should let Barrett walk because pass rushers are so high priced.

Godwin, AB, Gronk, and David remain.

But the key with Tampa Bay is they don’t have any current contracts that are backloaded or really any bad contracts either. They have a lot of guys they can restructure to spread out and kick the can down the road. A lot of teams have been can kicking for years and running out of options...Tampa would just be getting started. Their cap situation is like Denver around 2012/13. Lots of young, cheap talent...lots of cap flexibility.

They will resign some of their key core guys. One of Godwin or brown will likely be leaving. Arians has already talked that brady will likely be extended which could free up another 20 million dollars.

Brees will retire officially on June 2 which will also save money in the cap. Saints fans believe Payton will sign Winston to be the starter.

I wonder what Adam Humphries will do once the Tits cut him.

If anyone can ensure Winston does not to throw 30INTs a year it's Payton.

Yep. They'll have ~$30m in cap space w/o any restructures. Maybe Gronk comes back for 1/2 of what he made in 2020. David and AB might be manageable.

Barrett and Godwin will be the bank-breakers.

I agree. He is very underrated as a coach. He went 8-1 over the last 2 seasons when Brees was injured. 5-0 with Teddy and 4-1 with Hill who is a gadjet player.

Tom will decide who they keep and let go anyway....

I have been reading rumors that Watt may end up in Tampa. Let Suh go and replace with Watt.
