Martellus Bennett went on a deep, rather dark Twitter rant on Tuesday night.

The former NFL tight end started out by quote-tweeting a TMZ article about Brandon Marshall wanting a fight with boxing star Deontay Wilder, and ended on the bad side about the NFL and professional sports in general.

Bennett replied to his initial tweet hours later.

“Honestly football made me such an angry person, everything bothered me,” Bennett tweeted. “Football is interesting. Psychologically it’s some really dangerous s***. To really play the game of football you have to have some f***ed up wiring in your head.
“It’s chaotic. It takes years and years of brainwashing to go along with a lot of the s***. Lol. It starts at peewee. That’s why you gotta watch who is coaching your kids and what they’re teaching them beyond the game.”

Blame Bill. Seems to be what everyone is doing these days.
Is he even doing that here? I just see him ranting about football culture in general, maybe with some CTE effects mixed in.

He is Kyrie Irving except no one pays attention to him.

I think I understand a bit of what he is going on about here (maybe it was *my* peewee coach?) because I definitely remember being screamed at to go and try to kill the opposing team's players. And although it has been decades since it happened, I distinctly remember the sound of a kid's leg breaking a la Joe Theisman and hearing his scream and even worse, the cheer we heard from both the home crowd as well as our coaching staff as we ran off the field after that nasty tackle. I stood by and tried to help the kid... he was bawling his eyes out by then... but my coach was yelling at me to get away from him. It was less than a year later that I decided football wasn't for me. I guess I just didn't have that killer instinct.

I'm not seeing anything dark. He gave his honest take of football. I complain when I get a headache/hangnail so I can definitely empathize and understand that I want no part of the physical pain that comes with being a professional football player.

My sympathy starts to wane for guys that have been in the league 10 plus years. They are rich enough at some point to change professions and stop playing russian roulette with their health.

Gronk is a prime example. I was genuinely happy when Gronk hung it up. He is already rich and has rings. We can see the toll it has taken on him physically. I was happy that he felt healthy enough to play again, but I was disappointed in him for actually doing so. I pray he is feeling alright but he seems like a glutton for punishment.

Agreed on all points. I don't see a rant. I see a guy trying to share his experience. He's working **** out. He was a big part of that team that beat Atlanta and came up huge when gronk went down. Similar to Danny. They get asked stuff, they answer. ( in Dannys case) The media removes the context and or nuance from the conversation and propogate an us v them mentality. Nothing to see here. Just an ex pro venting.

There’s good and bad about football just like most professions. He’s only posting about the negative aspects

Not in the least but I figured everyone else is.

From being around sports training fields (not related to football, but other sports) I think there may be something entirely different going on when Bennett speaks about peewee. I live in the inner city and I'm on those fields a couple of times a week, and coaches of kids who come from inner city or impoverished backgrounds are incredibly tough on these kids. But it's the football coaches who are doing this. Same demographic in other sports does not get pushed like the football kids. I would never step in because I don't have the experience to know what is right and wrong here, but all I can say is that I marvel that the kids perform under that strain and at the same time I want to put a stop to it. I played HS football and thought my coaches were tough. They are nothing like what I see at the peewee level.

Good to see Bennett has returned safely from the trip back to his home star system, Alpha Centauri.

I don't see the lie in anything Bennett said.

People always talk up how they like someone who tells it like it is, and then act like a biotch the second someone actually does it.

I love Marty! Why the hate in this thread? The man speaks the truth...playing football is dangerous as F...and doesn't pay as well as baseball or basketball.
