Top 5 most disappointing Patriots from 2020

Based on my expectations for the season,
Cam and Harry were the most disappointing to me.

I'd add Edelman too mostly because of the drops amd injuries and his absence severely damaged the offense.
I guess that was kind of my thinking too around Gilmore.

Cam wasn't a disappointment. He ranked firmly in the bottom 12 in the league in DVOA and QBR and most metrics that measure both running and passing among QBs every year post 2015. Even in his prime (rookie season until the 2015 sb) he was usually around the 12th most productive QB in the league.

I'll admit I let myself hope a bit that he could be closer to top 10 with some Foxborough magic, but it was not an actual expectation based on the player's career arc.

Anyhow, long story short, a guy can't be a disappointment if he does the exact same thing he's been doing the last 5 years.

I find it hard to put a rookie on there and have avoided people who had injuries (Beau Allen) so based on hopes/expectations pre-season and focusing on players that were out there, I would say:

Harry - makes 5 mistakes for every catch (struggle to call them plays)
Bentley - there was a hope he could step up and be the centre piece of the 2020 defence. Terez Hall ended up looking better
Cam - nuff said. I wasn't expecting pro bowl Cam but thought he would be able to throw
Jason McCourty - just played bad all year. Got beat every game
Stidham - couldn't even push for a start even with Cam playing terribly and despite what we were told about his progression.

1. Cam Newton - wanted him to succeed, still do, wherever he winds up. He gave everything he could, but that throwing motion is just all wrong right now. He's shot-putting short passes. I don't think it's fixable, but I hope I'm wrong.
2. Harry - I keep defending the kid. he is exactly as advertised coming out of college. I wish they'd just throw the ball his way 15 times a game to see what kind of rhythm they can find with him and see if he's got any kind of future here.
3. John Simon - He's been a great pick-up, but this year, just didn't look it. Age? Injury?
4. Derek Rivers - Been rooting for him since his first preseason. Flashes like a pro, but just can't stay healthy. Ah well.
5. Chase Winovich - I expected more from him, and I only put him here because I'm afraid that he's on the wrong side of BB. He shouldn't bust here at all - he's got the talent.

Good List. I think Wino and Simon deserve to be here. All the TE's too.

I wonder what people expected from Cam.
Anyway Harry has to be on the top of the list.
I expected cam to be a horribly inaccurate passer and poor decision maker who could overcome his deficiencies and be not horrible overall by making plays in the running game and scrambling around to create big plays down the field.
I was terribly disappointed.

1. Cam. I was his biggest defender in the offseason. While I was right he would easily beat out Stidum, I was terribly wrong thinking he'd stabilize the QB position and get them to a 10-6 record. Didn't think he'd end up as the worst QB in the NFL.
2. Harry. I put a lot of it on McDaniels. However, Harry could easily change that by showing something more in practice. He doesn't seem to have that personality that commands the ball and is okay hiding behind and out performed by an undrafted FA (that's pathetic). The play where Cam motioned him to run vertical but Harry just stood near the sideline should be a giant red flag on his intelligence. I didn't like his reaction to getting the ball popped out at the goalline as it looked like someone had died. It's almost like he felt he wasn't going to see the endzone again. He gets one more training camp with a new QB and I see BB pulling the plug if he still doesn't get it.
3. Winovich. He's regressed massively and got exposed not having teams paying attention to better players surrounding him. He's a fine complementary player, but he's not a bell cow pass rusher or stout run defender.
4. Michel. He's getting nicked up too much. However, he's again shown he can be effective when the O-line creates Grand Canyon sized holes. I like him getting involved in the passing game more. Move on from White/Burkhead and have Michel and Harris get the bulk of the touches next year.
5. Gilmore. He didn't look very interested at times this season. I could see him wanting to get traded.

A shorter list for me would be the Most Non-Disappointing Patriots of 2020...

Don't get the Gilmore shade in this thread. He wasn't all-world again, but Covid and injuries aside, he wasn't bad at all. Statistically, he had a pretty good year...

1. Cam (...)
2. Harry (...)
3. JMac - Got burned and didn't look as tight in coverage as I'd hoped
4. Stidham (a lot changes in 8 months)
5. Winovich (rush defense deficiency came home to roost)

(Dis?)Honorable mention: J Williams, Bentley

Starting from the most disappointment

Cam
Harry
Simon
Winovich
Stidham
Keene
Mccourty twins

Wynn - when he plays he is excellent but he misses too much time year after year
Michel/Harris - both played well in the running game but missed a lot of time yet again
Edelman - am hopeful he did not come back late in season as it was no longer worth it vs strictly a health decision

If the 4 of them can play all 16 games next year that would be a huge boost to the offense.

Cam - my expectations were fairly low but still much higher than what he produced. His planned runs were generally successful but his lack of pocket awareness and inability to make plays off of scrambles were extremely disappointing.
Rookie TE's - due to lack of playing time we still have no idea if they are any good or if that is still a position of need

1. Bentley - after showing up a bit his rookie year then getting injured and buried in the depth chart, he had his chance to carve out his role/become a leader. Did not happen.

2. Cam - defended him a whole lot but I did expect alot more.

3. All our defensive ends - literally got no production from the unit. No setting the edge no getting after qb consistently.

4. Harry - couldn't stay healthy and when he was healthy did not contribute.

5. TE room - I was very hesitant to put them in here as generally I understand it takes 1 or 2 years of development to see what you got in a TE usually...but we didn't even get the bare minimum until the final game of season.

1. Stidham - The Pats need to draft a QB and sign a FA QB.
2. Hoyer - No reason to keep him.
3. Asiasi - No help
4. Keene - No help
5. Wynn - Has landed on IR 3 years in a row.

I already knew that Harry is a Bust.

Cam is what we thought he was. A rushing QB. Supposedly, Cam shined in 9 games in a pass heavy system directed by Norv Turner.

Come to think of it I'll make Stidham #1 disappointment and Cam #2.

Not that I should have expected a lot from a 4th round draft pick - but we were led to believe Stid was this promising great young QB who the team loved in preseason last year and in camp... and all of a sudden the team believes he's not good enough to take the starters role over a guy who can't pass. Says it all. And not one of his appearances this year made me question that decision by the team.

Not one.

Was this guy really the plan post Brady? Yikes. I doubt he makes the roster next September.

Next time the team talks up a 4th or later round draft pick as the next great thing my expectations will be zero until I actually see results for myself on the field.
