Breer: How the wheels came off the Pats dynasty

I'm not sure whose at fault, but the strategy has to change. About a week ago, Curren said on the "Pat McAfee Show" that he not confident Bill can turn things around.

I have confidence Bill is still an elite coach. I'm not confident in the offensive staff around him . Turnaround only possible with an entirely new OC. Offense keeps getting worse with McDaniels

.

Harry acing the in house interview interesting. Didn’t Gronk fall asleep during his?

We had O'Brien and Reese here who knew how to draft. Fortunately McDaniels wasn't here then so we were able to draft Gronk, Hernandez, Edelman, Hightower, Chandler Jones. Nobody since McDaniels came back to give bust picks an ace workout grade

Virtually every former NE coach and GM type front office guy has turned out to be a disaster.

Mangina, BOB, Crennel, Weis, Patricia, Mickdanny, Joe Judge is on borrowed time. What a surprise with Flores. 86ed - Pioli, Dimitroff, Quinn. Caserio needs to get out now and land him a big payday before the smell is totally off the rose.

Im watching these NFL games and these sports announcers start going on about the Beleichick coaching tree. Im like, what and who the hell are they talking about?

Wonder if we will reach out to guys such as dimitroff, Pioli or Quinn. Especially if Caserio moves on.
I would...I would ask as many of the First Dynasty scouts & execs to return as I can get my hands on...

Brady left, horrible drafts...article over.

You "restock" your talent in the draft. The "second dynasty" was built with good draft picks like Gronk, hightower and mccourty.

We've barely drafted NFL players lately

Anybody remember McDaniels trading up for 2nd round pick Alphonzo Smith in 2009 for a future 1st rounder (2010) and trading up for Tim Tebow in the first round in 2010? WOW!

My major concern is that does he have strong enough voices on his staff that will stand up to him and say "No, Bill".

The full article goes into greater detail:

For example:

The Patriots have bled promising young scouts over the last few years in part because those guys wanted to have a real voice in the process—something very few felt like they had in Foxboro. And drafting N’Keal Harry in the first round is a strong example of it.

Harry perfectly illustrates Belichick’s scouting blind spot. Belichick’s close with Harry’s college coach, ex-Arizona State coach Todd Graham, and Harry crushed his in-house visit with the team in the spring of 2019, doing a better job with his turn in Foxboro than Deebo Samuel or A.J. Brown did with theirs. So despite warning signs from the scouts on Harry, the team wound up taking Harry in the first round.

Many on this forum have been bashing the scouting department, but if the article is correct then that is not the issue. The problem is that the decision maker(s) are not listening to the scouts. That in turn has caused another problem: good scouts departing.
We also have to see the picks which have worked inspite of the scouts having red flags. Those stories likely wont be give much mileage. Gronk e.g. might be a great example. At some point , its going by the gut and that is what BB has done. Unfortunately he has missed on the WR spot badly. Harry for his part, his early injury last yr didnt help. And Brady being on the grumpy side of 40, not having enough patience with the rookie added to it. Harry has just landed in the worst possibl situation with brady and cam. I doubt metcalf wouldve done better here.
I also wnt to see breer write on how wheels came of on the other dynasties in the last 20 yrs. Oh wait, there arent any.

By next yr, the media will be clamoring for bill to be replaced. And about half the fans here would as well. This is classic boston media

I get all that but Covid did happen and the defense did opt out, the real reason we're not in the playoff.
Way too simple an outlook. We had no QB or weapons at receiver. The team had big flaws.

On the other hand, the Broncos drafted Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker during his tenure there who turned out to be quite good WRs.

Yes, but didn't get much out of Thomas until he left and Manning showed up. Same with Decker who I liked coming out of college and wanted the Pats to draft.

HT and a declining Chung would've fixed the D? Bad drafting causing Brady to walk and other horrible decisions (Sanu trade, signing/cutting AB, signing Demaryius Thomas/trading Thomas, relying on Josh Gordon/cutting him midseason etc.,) is the reason they are not in the playoffs.

Their#1 QB managed double digit passing yds in 4 games culminating in a 34 yd mindbender on MNF.

Yet the mantra continues..........."He gives the team the best chance to win"

McDaniels needs to leave now so the Belichick nut huggers have no more excuses.

Gotta love the convenient narrative that because we are losing now that Bill Belichick, the great one, the genius, the mastermind, the architect behind the greatest dynasty ever has actually been having McDaniels whisper poisonous advice into his ears lately and that’s why we suck. Y’all are unbelievable.
