Another one gone, Michael Stone turns down Pats contract offer to test FA

My issue with Stone is that he came off of the street and did very well in our system and he did well on ST's. There are those who think I'm crazy, but I believe he owes the Pats something for their allegiance to him. If he did not come here would have just been a memory in the grand scale of the NFL. Good luck in the ST market, but not sure he will do as well on other teams as he did in ours. Personally would like to see him back as a ST player and another backup if injury problems hit our DB's this year.

I have seen alot of people posting that certain players "owe" us something because we picked them or because we gave them a chance, and thats just wrong. If we can treat players like its a business, then they have the right to treat teams the same way, it's only fair.

Safety Michael Stone, one of the Patriots' remaining free agents, said the Patriots have made him a contract offer but he's decided to test the free agent market.

This made me laugh.

Good for him. He knows he won't be the starter here. Let him go somewhere that he can compete in camp for a starting job. If he can't find that then welcome back to special teams and backup duty, he was decent at both.

well...dude's gotta feed his kids you know...and his stylist...

With our depth chart at Safety, who can blame him?

Agree, this 'owe' business is way off the mark - nobody owes anybody anything.

He was pretty good on ST but plateaued as a Safety. He made some nice hits but also had some big missed tackles. He was beaten out by Hawkins and with, hopefully, Harrison, Scott and Sanders coming back . . . well . . .

I wouldn't say he's gone just because he wants to test the market. With what some of these teams are paying who can blame anyone for looking? He probably feels that with the way Pat players get injured, he would probably get a call later if he doesn't land a starting job somewhere else! So why not?

I tend to agree...find another team...there are young safeties here though..SCott, if he doesn't blow out another knee again and Sanders, who also was injured for a lot of the year. And do not forget Ray Ventrone who will be playing in NFLE..and who I think has a shot as a STer this year. Many players have commented on him as being the real deal and just needed more time in playing. Se ya!!

I agree no one owes the Pats nothing. Troy Brown has been an excellent soldier for the Pats for 13 years, turns down less money to stay w/ the Pats, and now he's out of a job. And people who say Givens owes us something, c'mon if you were 25 and had the chance to set up your family for life you would do it to, no matter how much you wanted to stay w/ the Pats.

Agreed, teams flat out cut players like there's no tomorrow and owe them nothing. But someohow the players should feel like they owe something to their team? I think not.

All these "they owe us" and where's the "respect" posts are getting really, really old. Teams treat players as a business, and fans get upset when players do the same. When Stone sighs with Tampa Bay or San Fran for whatever his reasons you will forget all about him like he was never here. Sheeeesh. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. 2 way street, get used to it. MY 2 cents. :rocker:

It is definitely a business...door swings both ways

Sometimes you have to wonder if these players and their agents have [stuff] for brains.

Let's review the bidding. Michael Stone is out of the NFL, pounding the street. That means that 32 teams have decided that he can't play. He's already "tested free agency"... and flunked out. Go find a job as a bricklayer.

So, he gets lucky and the three time Super Bowl champion has twenty-one defensive backs go down with injury last year. They figure, "why not try a bricklayer, we ain't got anybody else" and give him a call.

And, he catches lightening in a bottle. During his short stay, the Pats are impressed enough with his special teams play to give him a vet minimum deal and bring him back the following year. Hey, it sure as heck beats laying bricks, right? Not only that, but the stars and the moon have aligned and said 3-time SuperBowl championship team doesn't even have a starting strong safety, so there's even a shot to get a look as depth in that department along with special teams.

So, what do these idiots do? Halfway through a handle of Southern Comfort, Stone and his agent hatch a brilliant plan: "Let's hold the Pats' feet to the fire and test free agency!" As if the other 31 teams might have a higher vet minimum salary in their version of the Collective Bargaining Agreement! So the bricklayer walks away from an NFL contract, perhaps thinking that Daniel Snyder will be sending his private jet any minute now.

It must drive Belichick nuts to have to deal with morons.
